Nothing says, "Hey international companies, bring your manufacturing to the US" like arresting 475 workers at a Hyundai (70% of whom are South Korean).

Well... what do you think the detention centers are for? The prison industry and especially the privatised ones, brings in at *least 80 billion dollars every single year. So many big corporations already have massive manufacturing contracts with various prisons. Inmates are, in essence, slave labor.

I honestly can't see how this plays out well under any scenario. It's a fuck you to direct investors. Any foreign investor has to look at this and think: Why would I risk it? And if the US goes any crazier with the tariffs they risk becoming a full on autarky.

Two possibilities: 1. ICE has a quota. The system spit out that over 200 Koreans had overstayed their work visa or came in under a tourist visa and were working. So they did this on their own. 2. White House was informed first and is using it as trade deals leverage (i.e. extortion).

You have to go back at least as far as The Business Plot to overthrow the government in 1933 and put in a fasciest dictator to even look for an answer. You's need to focus on the Kotch family and the Bush family too. Without the Kotch family paying the bills the John Birch Society would have died.

I'd bet most of the folks taken were here on "official" (in the eyes of Hyundai) business - brought in for their expertise to help get the new plant running or to train US staff. So, if immigration crimes were committed they probably started at the top. Did we see any execs in cuffs? It was theatre.

The sane individuals in the Free World are just sitting back and watching as America implodes. By the time the dust settles, we will have already moved on without you. Trust us, we will not miss you ! 🤷‍♀️

I avoid travelling anywhere near the Middle East because of their arcane laws. Now, I have added the US to my 'no go' areas. Imagine businesses deciding the possibility of relocating in the US. If I were a business owner, I'd run in the opposite direction.

Almost lifetime Georgia USA resident who has just moved out after 74 years. Being a brown skinned person in Georgia felt too uncomfortable at this point. Although I lived thru McCarthy and segregation.

Separate issue. Wondering why the majority of the workers are South Korean? They open these plants with the promise of jobs and the state gives these companies all these tax breaks but then they bring over all these workers from S Korea? Something is wrong.

Maybe? Or they subcontract a lot of the construction work to legit local Korean led companies and look the other way when those companies employ folks who have overstayed their visas. I’ve seen this happen at my husband’s company. I’d like to know more.

Trump is "programmed" for non-stop "tough guy". He NEVER considers the consequences of his actions, e.g. who will initially run the newly installed equipment, who will train new American workers. What a WASTE of taxpayer dollars and lives (attacking the Venezuelan boat w/o clear FACTS).

My thoughts exactly. Whenever a company opens a new facility they always send existing workers there to set it up and build it. Amazon does it every other company does it. And this was no different. Why should companies build new factories here if they're going to get harassed.

The real issues is we are being told about all these jobs from companies making plants here and it is obvious they are not employing the magats but importing people, funny shit.

The tiny orange turd is mad all the other dictators got together and failed to invite him. So, he is lashing out. Just shows how much of a candy ass little shit head he truly is. He is going down in flames fast in the USA for his stupid ICE policies. Always a distraction with this one.

Why would any person, politician, or country trust a regime that is constantly changing the rules, making up false accusations (fentanyl, etc), forgetting a long history of partnerships, and offering nothing in return. Asking for Canada. Fuck them....time to move on even if it hurts for a while.

Were they "undocumented," or with legal work visas that 47 chose to invalidate? It sure makes sense to me when a foreign entity sets up to manufacture in the US to bring a contingent of fully-trained workers temporarily to ease the transition to a US workforce. Making sense, or making a show?

Yes, that would be good practice. Why would Hyundai spend such huge money on this project but then try to save a few dollars by taking the risk of sending its workers over without the proper visas?

This makes more sense when you consider 47's hatred of EVs, and that the raid was at an EV battery plant. Hyundai is looking like it will be the 800 lb gorilla of the EV industry as Tesla nosedives. And EV adoption is still gaining fast, even with all his efforts to stop it.

Thats was my first thought too... just like the "undocumented" immigrants they deport while checking in with immigration courts... documented until 10 seconds before ice grabs them bsky.app/profile/acam...

The thing about opening a factory in a spiraling fascist country is that industrial espionage is a thing and anyone Donald Trump assigns to work on building that factory is 100% suspectable as industrial espionage… I’d say experts but…amateurs.

He'd be doing whatever The Federalist Society wanted exclusively or whatever the people closest to him who realized how to manipulate him wanted. Left on his own, he'd just try to make crooked business deals that profited or kicked back to him. Arguably, better, but not good.

Who wants the suspense of being slowly overtaken by China, just throw relevance and super power status away. No soft power. Huge brain drain. Just a massively outsized military and nuclear stockpile. We'll just be over here waving a gun around for attention like North Korea.

If the gestapo arrested those workers. They followed a legal paper trail. They had to be legal to work there. You can't hide illegals in a big factory like that. The gestapo are deporting legal workers. Hmmm, maybe maga will pick up the slack. Lmao!!

I saw an article that said the vast majority of the people arrested were locally sourced construction workers hired by a non-Hyundai construction company, and they probably did not have proper paperwork. Which is it?

Then Trump decrees only train & hire American. Does that decree apply to Mar a Lago hiring too? How will he staff his hospitality services? Emergency visas may be necessary for MAL hiring. Only the Evil Genius - oops Stable Genius can fix it. No wonder he needed a nap in the sun. #OldGuysNap

When they announced the battery plant built in Windsor, Ontario, the Liberals said this would bring a lot of high paying jobs building the plant and would hire 25 hundred workers, when all these Chinese workers showed up, the MP said ''They have the expertise to build plant'' They didn't say that BF

"Among those detained were South Korean employees on business travel.... "The raid could raise concerns for South Korean companies that are sending personnel to the US and hiring locally." It comes weeks after Hyundai pledged $26 billion in US investments. Gift link ⬇️ www.wsj.com/us-news/u-s-...

🤣😂 it certainly does when the plan is to destroy America forever. Putin’s shadow government is doing a fine job. I’ll bet Viktor Orban is envious of pedophile’s/republicans takeover of the U.S. Putin is republicans’ daddy.

Our nation is being run by truly stupid people, with this large nation it’s going to take some time for the real damage to show up, and Trump and his sycophants, will hide it as long as they can, it will be even harder to write the ship. Our future is not looking good, even if we take back over.

Hyundai hired South Korean contractors for their Georgia plant to utilize their specialized expertise and potentially speed up construction. No local contractor has the necessary skills, apparently.

Shackled by their hands and feet because of course they filmed it for further embarrassment. So high on their own supply, they are building the cases that will come against them. Ultimately Cosplay Kristi/Nikki is responsible for this.

Just wait for the world cup and olympics. Hundreds of people from different countries will end up detained and arrested. Leaders should remember they also have voters and people in their country who may begin demanding action from their government over this kind of stuff.

Keep your eyes peeled...one of the shining stars in Montgomery, Alabama is a huge Hyundai plant. There are also several other types of manufacturing plants there that have Asian names that supply the Hyundai plant with parts. Wonder if any of those will get raided too. I doubt it!!

Agree. When you land in nearly every country on Earth - you are not allowed to work without a work permit as a foreigner. Nearly every country has laws & enforces them. A big company like Hyundai should have known this & has a system in place to vet this. Having said that - wonder if Musk did this

Nonsense. Under the U.S. Visa Waiver Program, citizens of 40 nations are exempt from obtaining a visa for up to 90 days for business. Includes South Korea. This is a sensible and commonplace reciprocal rule. For example for < 90 day business travel citizens of the USA do not need a S. Korea visa.

No country allows employment of foreigners on a scale like that even temporary. I hate Trump, worked in multiple countries, very aware of labor laws in other countries & USA. Unfortunately that's not how labor laws work in practice. Laws everywhere are there - to protect local citizens employment.

On a scale like what ? I've worked at new-build foreign owned manufacturing facilities which in the set up and commissioning phase have brought in dozens or hundreds of specialists from abroad, who just do that. One of those, Foxconn had a global specialised team just for setting up cleanrooms.

A eerie prediction I heard is that future video games will have americans (ICE and trumpists in general) as the bad guys you shoot at. Like mecha-trump will be the end boss. I hate doing the "everything is video games", but the amount of animosity makes me feel like it will be true.

The astounding bit is all the American standing by and allowing it. South Korea put a quick stop to their coup, and both Duterte and Bolsanero got arrested for their shenanigans. Serbia has been bleeding in protest for over a year. Americans sit by and say, 'I don't know what to do'.

Hyundai should sue ice for loss of productivity and lost company income for every single one of those employees that have a verified I-9 on file. They're getting pressure from only one side right now, quotas. They need to get caught in a squeeze play till they buckle.

It's baffling to hear they're doing this on top of tariffs and not providing actual incentives to move manufacturing to the U.S. and not just somewhere cheap other than China. It's like angrily chasing a bunch of cats around thinking they're gonna understand what you want them to do...

You're talking about someone who is a completely demented idiot, who knows absolutely nothing about literally anything, but thinks he knows EVERYTHING And the people he installed are even dumber than he is When you look at it from that angle it really isn't baffling at all

Yeah, I know Trump's stupid and delusional, but it's more the fact that his party is standing down and letting him go ahead and do this shit. Also, there's that part of your brain that says, "surely he can't be *that* stupid".

Like what he's trying to do to undermine the Fed's independence... are the GOP just gonna stand aside and let Trump fuck around with the Fed? Or are they going to take note of what happened in Turkey when their dictator did the exact same thing?

He's been that stupid his whole life Just ask NY & NJ And yes, tiny johnson will allow trump to do anything he wants It's up to us to hold them all accountable Do you read Robert Hubbell on Substack? I highly recommend

That certainly helped. Fucking over everyone that ever crossed his path, and good lawyers aided in the rest. Special place in hell for everyone involved that put him where he is today.

GOP are doing all they can to attack significant OECD investors. Trump & Co are currently attacking the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund. All sorts of threats! Incl denying US visas to top management. The Fund owns ~1.5% of all the world’s listed co’s, much of it in US! www.ft.com/content/1dc9...

Trump is an idiot. We are already seeing foreign countries strengthen trade ties between themselves and shift away from trading with the US. There’s a big world out there, if I’m Hyundai I don’t need to bother building another plant in the US, I’ll grow elsewhere.

This is a real concern…. I really don’t think the athletes or coaches have anything to worry about- it is the fan, family, and visitors in general. If they have accurate reporting as to what is happening here, why would they visit the usa? Stay away for your own safety

I'm pretty sure that this would be every Montréaler's reaction at the thought of hosting the Olympics (the last time it took more than 30 years to pay of the debt and the Olympic Stadium keeps costing the city millions of dollars every year):
