Yes, tariffs are a tax, but people don't mention often enough that they are a regressive tax. Taxes on consumer goods tax the poor at a higher rate, as basic necessities are a much larger part of their spending. If food goes up by 20%, it is a tax on the poor. Rich people won't even notice.

Tarrifs will make US products go up by 25%. Not just the imported goods. Covid showed us this. All prices went up did they not? After trump 2018 tarrifs on Canada. High prices caise inflation.

There is no such thing as middle class. It's a made up term to give people with some money the ability to feel good about it. There are two classes, working and capitalist. There is no middle between them. If you are not self-employed, you are a worker.

Capitalist have stolen over a trillion dollar since 1970. The trillion dollar mark was hit in 2020. This affects everyone working any job no matter the skill or pay grade. Americans are brainwashed into believing the US is the best at everything and anything else is a "nanny" state.

I'd much rather have my tax dollars provide more for the citizens than drop bombs on countries that have done us no harm. Americans typically pay as much as a European does for things like education, health care, retirement, etc but get much less back on from their taxes and have less time off.

Everyone is paying attention where that tariff $ goes, right? The tax an American pays on the higher priced good goes back to be wasted by this administration as they support Tesla and play golf games. Steal from the poor and give to the rich.

And he’s well on his way… cutting off food pantries and other food programs, even asking for money back from states, for programs that have had this spending previously approved. It feels like all these programs being eliminated are going to hurry along the efforts to get rid of large numbers ppl

One assumes that's the primary attraction for conservative, Republican voters, who famously hate the poor, the economically weak and struggling, want them to suffer, while worshipping and wanting always to coddle the rich, the elite, the establishment, help them avoid paying taxes and so on.

I think in 1929 tariffs caused some terrific mass chaos— More brilliant ideas replicated, perfect way to destroy the USA If your names’ Putin & you have a string of fk heads who want to join in on the fun of destroying THEIR own nation… is that treason? JUST WONDERING? 🤔

Hence the reason they refer to it as a 'little disruption'. It's far more than a 'disruption' when you can't feed your family. In one of the 'wealthiest' countries, when 90% of the population shoulders the strain while the wealthy 1% increase their wealth its time to admit there's a serious problem.

I literally just paid 50% in tariff duties (aka extra costs per unit) to release a small shipment from my overseas suppliers. Normally 25% but Trumps extra 25% was a crappy surprise when I saw the customs invoice. We’ll try and absorb the extra costs for as long as possible. We only have 2 options

"Trump’s tariffs will be paid by the poor – while his tax cuts help the rich"

The math doesn’t work in the president’s economic promises, which will create a giant upward transfer of wealth. Trump’s tariffs will be paid by the poor – while his tax cuts help the rich. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2025/mar/15/trump-tariffs-robert-reich

We are living the movie Idiocracy. If you haven't seen it, go watch it. Then next week when the Handmaid's tale starts back up, watch that too. It could be our future! We women need to rise up en masse and show this corrupt regime who they work for.

Trump still says the country of origin pays the tariffs. His ding bat spokes woman says it as well. She chastised the reporter who she said questioned her knowledge of economics.

Don't get me started! My Sis and BIL are in the 7-figure club, and she was complaining to me about the price of groceries. I replied "Your kids have moved out, your husband travels every week, and you don't cook. How much are you even spending on groceries?!"

Higher income people will substitute private label goods for name brands. Food out, that is where they'll extend their spending. We're still talking about reduced area specific spending... Recessionary sign!

To explain it clearly, if you tax food at 20%, and a poor person spends 10% of their income on food, that is a 2% tax on their income. Very rich people might spend only 0.1% of their income on food though, so that is only a 0.02% tax on their income.

This is why poor people should not have children. When one is poor with this kind of government, hope is lost for the next generation too: pay more on food being poor, less is left for education. Oligarchy needs it all to go to Mars.

Trump is taxing poor Americans because he is a wealthy elite with imperialist ambitions and he wants to achieve his goals on the backs of his poor base because they are powerless and he knows it. They voted for him and now they are irrelevant

Which is why I always think it's nuts so many big brain economists and such say it would be much more efficient to get rid of income tax and replace it entirely with various consumption taxes.

it's why penalties are not indexed to gross income. To the 1% any speeding or parking fine is less annoying than a mosquito bite. Doesn't have to be. In Finland they are indexed. In 2001 the Nokia CEO was caught speeding, his fine was $116,000. He was not happy.

Oh - and JD Vance Declares he will keep raising Tariff's until the EU says Thank You? Tariff's don't hurt anyone but the Consumer. That's the end user, the person eating the meal made from that food. Wearing those shoes, or that warm coat. Stay COLD & HUNGRY

It's not quite so simple... As a tax, they are indeed regressive... But the one thing that they actually can accomplish is making it more costly for local capitalists to buy the product of foreign labor (and therefore, they help local labor). There's a reason Sanders favors some tariffs...

If the tariffs create new American jobs, maybe he’s banking on fired federal employees to fill that void. The pool of other people ready, willing, and able to work is steady shrinking by his own doing. However this won’t work because the local labor is expensive and no one can afford anything.

It's a way of increasing massively the taxes paid by gullible dimwit MAGA without them realising that it's tax, rather than just 'higher prices'. The silly pillocks literally demanding the super rich elite become even more super rich, whilst they get poorer.

This is the ENTIRE problem with Libertarians and you have to literally be a delusional moron to join the sausage party of white supremacists bc ultimately their goal is to make the middle class disappear and kill the poor. I have met many Randroids and zero were multimillionaires. They're deranged.

Trump is using the tariffs to destroy the American economy so that he can push his tax cuts for billionaires as a form of necessary stimulus even though it’s Donald Trump, who’s tanked the economy. It’s the worst economic scam in American history.

You're right. Buuut they really want to buy that fourth yacht they've been eyeing - it comes with a helipad! And it'll be cheaper to pay off these politicians for $10M instead of paying $8M a year in taxes. Yyyeah, they live in a totally different reality than us...

Although true, inflation does effect the poor more & quicker, rich people spend far more money therefor contribute a greater percentage of user taxes that pay for social services the poor use more. The made in Canada approach is good to keep Canadians working while we fight off tariff's!

This is what I keep saying. I think this was the plan. This, combined with cutting income tax on the rich and corporations is how they want to achieve the old libertarian wet dream of a regressive overall tax structure.

Tariffs: tax to make your favorite imports & your favorite local products w/ imported components more expensive for you. Retaliatory tariffs: when the pissed off other country either won’t buy your goods (ex. Kentucky liquor) & you lose $. Or they sell your goods at higher prices & you sell less.
