I feel pretty misunderstood by people living in rural areas, and yet mysteriously, this isn’t considered a problem. I’m sick of putting up with this idiotic display of obeisance to chucklefucks simply because they live in rural areas.

Republicans control all 3 branches of government. Even when they don't, both parties pump out constant rhetoric about "real Americans" living in rural areas. The entire premise of this article is a conservative-fluffing myth. Cities have more political power because that's where most people live!

It’s so weird, right? Like I’m not a monster for liking living in a city? I’m a city girl. I respect other people’s different choices. Please also respect mine??? Another one of those “why must this be so difficult” questions. VERY annoying.

I don’t think it’s simply because they live in real areas. I think it’s because the American constitution literally gives people who live in real areas more voting power. If you live in a dense urban area electorally youre a second class citizen so they focus on the people whose votes matter or more

There are also people in rural areas who are not cruel backward conservatives. There are first gen immigrants and BIPOC ppl living in rural areas. Somehow we never hear from those 'heartland dirt under their fingernails real Americans'. Weird.

Living 30 minutes away from a decent Thai restaurant does not grant people magical powers of wisdom and morality. It is insane that American culture still pretends that this is true.

American apartheid requires the concept of “real” Americans (who just so happen to support white male supremacy) to legitimize a system of minority rule (by white men) and call it democracy

I think everyone in London lives about a ten minute walk from one, and unfortunately, we aren’t all Gandalf. I am wise, of course, because of the decent kebab shop down the road.

Once you have the self control not to eat a kebab that will go through you like a dose of plutonium after you have drank twelve pints of Estrella will you reach true wisdom, young Padawan.

It's a kind of simplified GW Bush style-shortcut, like country music stereotypes, that have the appeal of someone saying 'life doesn't have to complicated - it could be simple, like this, here in the heartland'. Where exactly? Oh you know. There. Back when it was great, remember?

SAME. Canada, but it makes no difference. I remember somebody on the community fb group telling another person to “go back to Vancouver, we’re all conservatives here” and I’m like, ahem, umm actually. I was born here. And I’m not the only one.

It happens globally. I'm done with it. I'm now a screeching rural lefty who wears a camo jacket AND brightly colored tights and if my cousins don't like it fuck em. I fly my peace flag from my container and I hope maga brains explode!!!

I grew up in rural areas so remote you drove 80 miles to get to a street light. People there are exactly the same as cityfolk-- except massively intolerant of anyone "different" and really great ar othering so they don't have to change their small minded status quo, they just drive out the "weird"

So what am I, urbanite who spends a fair amount of time in rural areas recently, not getting? It's all them wanting to impose their fucked up morals on cities*, or whining that more money is spent where people live. *Guns being the only exception where it's reversed.

I have been yelling about the state of my industry and how volatile it is (video games) but we never get a quarter of the news media dedicated to our political feelings that more rural occupations get. People justify horrible fossil fuel bullshit bc of coal miners but hey AI can bleed game dev dry

I do have loads of sympathy for rural folks on the logistics of their infrastructure. I live in a city in part to be close to medical infrastructure. It must be hard to have hospitals close or to be cut off when natural disasters occur. Why can’t that be reciprocated more?

And urbanites largely support increasing funding for rural infrastructure, because we do think they deserve to participate in our world to the extent that they want to. Meanwhile they want us to die. That’s the part that broke me in 2020. They openly want us to die, and are surprised when we object.

And I include a lot of leftists in that “they.” It has been enraging to see post after post asking us to not get angry at people in rural areas while people in rural areas call for war. bsky.app/profile/mich...

As usual, the story here isn't about "divides" or cosmopolitan elites looking down on rural populations. It is about radicalization. This woman wants violent vengeance for things that did not happen.

There's a certain romanticism in our culture about the tight-knit small town out in the countryside, and while I think I understand the whimsical appeal (think Studio Ghibli movies) I'm pretty sure it never actually existed. Pretending it did is historical malpractice.

I grew up in a tight-knit small town. My friend K. was being regularly raped by her dad and got pregnant from it and told the school nurse and the nurse called the local sheriff. 1/3

But the sheriff was K.'s dad's drinking buddy, so they got together & had a couple beers and her dad told the sheriff "K. is lying", and that was that. Nothing happened. He kept raping K. until she ran away, which she didn't do for a long time because he told her if she did he'd kill her horse. 2/3

They complain about less respect, but personally I find it very hard to respect someone who instantly treats me with disrespect, suspicion, and derision based solely on where I live. So many of these interviewees come off as more entitled than the people they decry as entitled.

Sadly, the chucklefucks have more voting power - fewer voters in each district can win a riding. That, and politicians and media continue to blather that big cities are elitist, scary and dangerous, all of which are lies.

I grew up in a rural area. One of my brothers still lives there with his family. I live in a city now. I’m entirely familiar with rural lifestyles; I’ve just chosen something else for myself.

It has nothing really to do with city living/rural living. It's that 50 years ago being a fucking white supremacist wasn't popular and they retreated from the cities to hide their evil out in the sticks. And now they're back in our cities. And we need to kick them out.

I am attempting to work my brain around the statement about state governments being "controlled by the city". What did they expect? Their job is to select someone from their community to represent their interests "in the city". These people are morons - and not because they are rural

The most infuriating thing about this is that those people aren't even representative of most people in rural areas! These interviews happen often when most are at work. These are affluent retirees/middle-to-upper management folks who can afford to spend working hours at a diner.

They never interview the teachers, surveyors, construction workers of these areas. Only the people who can comfortably sit down at the diner during midday. Infuriating.

I've lived both in city & currently rural. Republicans(in Va) here like to make the claims that city folk don't understand rural folk & vice versa. It's a standard play in their book to pit city folk against rural folk, etc. Sadly, it works as few push back, so they keep doing it.

'NOVa is bad!' is a standard trope here. So many rural folk who've never lived elsewhere, vote accordingly, & yes, most often against their best interests, repeatedly.

Not sure, but I think a thick nature=God artery feeds America’s subconscious. Not qualified to say if this true or not or how it came to be if so, but I’m fascinated by America’s specific iteration of it, good and ill.

Hell, I'm from the city and live in the city now and I understand them all too well. They never shut up and the media never stops platforming them. Afraid of public transportation. Afraid of drag queens. Want farm subsidies but don't want to pay taxes.

The same thing is in Australia, the conservatives push this myth that the rural areas are the "real Australians" (although they'll gladly fuck them over) despite literally the majority of the population lives in either Sydney or Melbourne.

There's a documentary on Prohibition on Netflix that discusses a big part of it was fuelled by racism. The economic base was moving away from rural farms to the cities with migrants. The German migrants were opening breweries and making their weird "beer"

It's so funny too that I've heard from people in rural areas and suburbs both that the blue cities are asserting too much control over the rest of the state and also that the cities are sucking up all the tax revenue from rural/suburbs. Both things non-city areas do!
