For you youngs who weren't alive for this: Understand that the Chicks were an early rollout of the far right intimidation that we see targeting judges, members of Congress, and ICE protestors now.

omg The Chicks just brought out James Talarico on stage 👀

'K. When that paid-off home catches on fire, don't call the fire department to help you, because you didn't pay for it.

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Watching El-Sayed calmly take this dude apart is the best thing I've seen in ages.

SCOOP: 'Tommy' from the now-viral exchange with Abdul El-Sayed is Thomas Teepell, a former staffer for Republican Senator Josh Hawley with close ties to Christian Nationalist Sean Feucht. He's the son of a former Bobby Jindal staffer whose consultant work was instrumental in getting Hawley elected.

Wow -- Hannity is moving in for the kill: "Why not just say 'I went to Pepperdine Law School and then took a different career path'? Why get into this long drawn-out thing about the difference between a lawyer and an attorney?"

Man in a gilet stood on platform 12 gives up on reading the display and asks ChatGPT out loud if he is on the right platform for his train. I don’t want to be dramatic about it but Eratosthenes figured out the circumference of the Earth using a stick and knowledge of a distant well.

Part of why I don't like the AI-or-bust economy is the constant flopsweat of people on the news who say this HAS to work. Quit making everyone so anxious. Goddamn. If this is the next Google then why are you acting like this? I don't remember being told to buy an iPhone at gunpoint.

You guys, on my train home today, a man and his partner had the cutest white cat in a carrier. He got off at my stop and before he stood up, the cat climbed on his shoulder and *rode him home*.

So depressing because it's so fucking true.

I don’t want to sound glib, but if a woman actually wanted to “make up a crime to ruin a man’s reputation,” they’d pick one that people actually give a shit about, like hurting a dog or something.

Did anybody get an Anthropic email today? I'm confused. I disputed claim on two of my books, and those are the two showing up where no claim was disputed.

renaissance painting when the renaissance is really fucking stupid

You guys, I may have committed a grave error. I snapped back at the loony conspiracy theorist I went to HS with. My cousin posted a pic of Sagrada Famila. She pops up alleging that it's from the Tartarian Empire.

Look, I'm not going to waste time arguing when they allege that Stonehenge was Tartarian or whatever. But this is SAGRADA FAMILIA. Girl, just because you don't know the history doesn't mean no one does. They started it in 1882! There are records! Photographs!

The more the AI industry pleads “stop us!” the more I hear “we are not profitable, please force us out of business so we don’t have to pay back any of our investors!”

Nothing like a hard deadline to kick my ass in gear. I was supposed to write two chapters this weekend. I lost most of yesterday dealing with my sick cat. I sat down today and powered through them both without stopping. 4 thousand words.

My cat is okay-ish. 1K in testing later and we don't know why she seized, but she seems fine now, so 🤷‍♀️. But I feel like I reached my limit today. Work, and life, and in-law worries, and THE STATE OF THE FUCKING WORLD. If my soul cat dies I just don't even know....

The Harry Potter AI safety sex cult stuff has really thrown me for a loop. Like it's not bad enough the world turned out like this, it turned out like this for that reason. Goddamn

It's "effective altruism" in a nutshell. They convince themselves that AI will solve all the world's problems in the future, so therefore it's actually *good* for them to funnel all their time and money into that instead of doing anything about the problems all around them right now.

Nicholas Grossman@nicholasgrossman.bsky.social

“AI will kill us all” is how the tech industry, especially rich people in it, avoid talking about real world problems—ones they’re causing, exacerbating, or neglecting—while still thinking themselves good. “I’m better than all that,” they say. “I got high with my friends and BSed about the future.”

If you want a quick-ish explainer of these people, the Behind the Bastards podcast does a good multi-parter on the Zizians cult. Yes, that's what they're called.

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

The U.S. AI industry is being run by a batshit rationalist sex cult, and no, I am not being hyperbolic - they’re genuinely Like That:
