The currently escalating tech backlash must be put in the context of: “people have been listening to the most insufferable techbros in the world gleefully threaten everyone else with mass unemployment for over 6 years, and they’re sick of their shit”

Feels longer than 3 years cause same brand of tech bro was telling me the blockchain would put me out of a job while making them ungodly wealthy since at least 2020.

I was raised in a family of big tech employees and have been analyzing, working in, and reporting on tech since I was a teenager - and yes I do think the gleeful “we’re gonna take all your jobs, worms” rhetoric really did accelerate after 2019

There’s also just been this aggressive cultishness to it that I’ve found incredibly off putting. My first memory of AI as A Thing was some article about an engineer or something at like Google who became convinced they had created a god. Like, no, I don’t want the new god managing my inbox.

i think a lot of this is driven by the pivot at the c-suite level in SV, more or less. line employees are pretty much the same as they’ve always been.

the c-suite at least has been kinda poisoned by group chat brainworms and fundamental attribution error

I remember reading once about early SF fan meetups and zines from the 1920s, and how a common topic of discussion was whether SF fandom was a marker of being "more evolved" than the rest of humanity due to SF's embrace of big ideas and the concept of a high-tech future. Tech bros remind me of that.

Just the whole "we're better than you because we're into the Better Than You shit" attitude. It would also explain why they specifically target people with strong interests in other areas, like artists.

Maybe I wouldn't be so snarly about the subject if I hadn't been telling someone about my writing and their first reaction was "you should quit now because AI will do that soon"

Longer, IMO. The derangement began during Obama's second term. For a variety of reasons the nascent broligarchs had been invited to help the USG address some pressing problems. They did, but they created havoc, left with an incorrect understanding of how government worked, and protected themselves.

Yes, it’s been brewing for a long time - I’ve been covering tech ethics/evil topics since 2010 - but it really hit a new peak of insanity in 2020 imo.

They knew (and know) that accountability and transparency will lead to the breakup of big tech and of the rigged betting game that is Silicon Valley venture capital. They also face criminal liability, not just in the US but in most liberal democracies.

I think this is beyond the tech bro level, there was at least a requirement of some technical skills and understanding of the subject. These maga people are just about power and money, the tech is just a tool for them and that's how they will lose. A good response is to strengthen open tech

Yeah this. If those boneheads would shut up nobody would resent them & they could enjoy their money. But they want to dominate us all. I don’t think they’ll succeed. Mainly I want to be left alone to do my own thing without constantly hearing how an AI chat bot can do it better.

i run mainly in creative circles and it really is a testament to how this technology is received when even being falsely accused of using genAI is enough to derail or completely ruin your reputation/career

Every tech pitch deck to vc’s has a line going up and to the right and going past $1Bn in revenue. In almost every single case, the “area under the curve” in those graphs are American jobs. The AI pitch decks do the same but go past $1Tr. Their “area under the curve” is all white collar jobs

Yeah I for one have zero sympathy for the hurt feels of the same people who were sneering “have fun staying poor” at everyone who didn’t invest in their virtual beanie babies four years ago.

Or who spent the early 2000s telling artists they'd better figure out how to work for virtual tips, because "information wants to be free" and copyright protections were going away. (For art, anyway. Most of these guys had jobs writing copyrighted software.)

“You mean I have to pay an ARTIST to make my Absolutely Fabulous/Farscape slashfic videos? Well, in the future, I’ll have COMPUTERS do it for free, so do it for me for free now or else!”

After years of hearing from them about the cultish predictions of the revolution that crypto and the metaverse will bring in I don't know why I should believe them about AI. It all sounds like a pitch from a salesman who is desperate to keep the money flowing

Any other decade in human history, the Cat Piss Men camping in the corner of the high school cafeteria mumbling the most bloodthirsty shit about “When I’M in charge…” would be rightly ignored. In the 1980s, we gave them computers. In the 1990s, we gave them forums. In the 2000s, we gave them power.
