So, they're doing Close Protection for US officials, not general security. I'm trained in Close Protection, it is a very specific discipline that needs specialized training and a certain type of people. It is nothing short of bonkers to use ICE agents for this.

Do you want the short answer? We defunded ICE, so they have a limited payroll that's hemorrhaging cash at an accelerated rate due to over hiring officers. Trump is contracting as Olympic rent-a-cops to keep them on payroll, the funds come out of the general service administration, rather than DHS.

I wish! They got a $75B slush fund from The Big Beautiful Bill that was passed last year. Congress just passed HR 7147 which will maintain ICE's current funding level for fiscal year 2026. You can use 5calls.org to call your Senators & ask them to vote NO on funding ICE.

According to what I’ve read, Italy has had unstable leadership (not unlike a lot of countries) and they needed a PM who would stick. Typically that results in conservative right wing people because they take charge and mean business. Even Left Wing Italians respect her work ethic. But they’re wary.
