It's not as easy as folks think it is. Depending on the country, will need about $1M in the bank and/or to invest in the new country, plus retirement income. You can't work most countries. If you don't speak the language. Good luck setting up bank accounts, registering car, etc.

Exactly! This is the take away. We are "the wealthiest nation on the planet" yet people are leaving for affordability and a better way of life. Laughable if it were not so sad. I suspect we will next be seeing labor immigration waves to less developed nations, for jobs and an opportunity to work.

Please include all the younger generations who couldn't bother to become engaged and vote. 7 million people couldn't be bothered. Unions rights, Social Security, the EPA, CDC,CPA....and on anyone we're championed and became law by older generations. Then they were slowly chipped away & lessened.

Have they though? Taking their US earned pension/retirement, acquire a rental likely (paying a native), buying food, going out to eat, shopping, etc. Seems like taking very little and giving back to the economy. Unless you mean more people moving in drives up rental/housing costs?

In our communities retiring incomers also mean that village schools have had to close as families with young children cannot afford to live there, doctor’s surgeries & home care services are stretched, worse still many bring their right wing politics with them, oh & they don’t learn the language.

Wish I could afford to...plus I'm on oxygen 24/7 and can't be away from my machine for more that a few hours...sadly there's no way I could do it health wise...Body is still strong it's the COPD that's slowed me down...

Same! I’ve never been able to vote in an election where the Republican wasn’t running on an insane and dystopian platform. I thought McCain might have been reasonable, but then he decided to take a sharp right into crazyville. I probably would have voted Obama anyway though, I really like him.

Yes it's a better quality of life - because Europeans pay more appropriate taxes for better public services and infrastructure. D'ya think having tens of millions of desperate Americans without hope might be why the US has the highest proportion of prison incarceration among developed countries?

Yeah we built those systems up and paid and worked to get it functioning like this, which is hard because we are short staffed in care facilities as it is. They should work to fix their own country instead.

Not on the menu, unfortunately. Since one of their own (Lieberman)vetoed the ACA Public Option more than a decade ago, Ds have never pushed it, let alone M4A. They did however, shut down the gov to preserve public subsidies to profitable ins companies that can pay their CEO $10M/yr or more.

Yeah thanks, using facilities and networks you never paid into at all and just reaping the benefits. Fix the country you broke with extreme capitalism first before you come to mooch off what we built up. We already have issues with a greying population and don't need you to make it worse.

Haven't they been telling Europeans that their countries were dirt poor, shitty and crime infested places? Or is this another Schrödinger's fact from them. There when its convenient and absent when its not?

What if we don’t want them? Guess that when you’re old and decrept talking about public healthcare is no longer such a radical”socialist” concept, hey? Its convenient to do the fuck you want when you’re young and free, and then cry when you realize how your beloved system doesn’t care about you…hey?

What do they do for medical care? Medicare does not cover us, so do we have to pay for medical insurance over there? I know they have universal healthcare, but do they let immigrants just walk in and use it, especially older immigrants with high healthcare costs?

Even without insurance it’s much cheaper here. I live in Portugal. I just filled a prescription that with Medicare Advantage would cost nearly $700 for 3 months. Here it’s 135 euros. Once I establish residency I can buy cheap insurance and it would be free.

The only good thing that saves me from prescriptions on Medicare is that there’s a $2500 cap (up from $2000 last year, unfortunately), and Biden got rid of the “donut hole”. I take thousands of dollars worth of heart meds.

They don’t allow even other Europeans ( as I am ) just walk in and use it . There is a lot of bureaucracy involved. I know many people from US and Canada and other countries that absolutely love here. I also know many people that left before 5 years mark .Missing family and friends, high taxes etc

Not as easy as it sounds. There are still immigration controls for Americans moving to EU or UK. And it can be a huge deterrent to people with few assets or pension pots! Plus it can take many month even years. You dont just jump on a plane and retire in Italy. Just like Europeans cant retire here!

No. It's not as easy as getting a visa when you land, boom, bank account phone, and housing. It's immigration. So documents proving who you are and lots of money and frozen in an unspendable account. Laws change and suddenly you're immigration status is: exit now.

Moved to the UK to work in national security, since my birth country, after 15 years of service, decided that I was "DEI" for their national security. The UK folks appreciated my skill set and here we are. Needless to say, I didn't vote for the bollocks happening back home, but I cherish England.

Vote wrong your whole life, cause the collapse of a country, take the last of your wealth and fuck off to Spain. Love that for boomers. 🙏🙏❤️❤️✌️✌️

The "American Dream" - spend your life dreaming, then wake up and move to countries that have everything you've been dreaming about. American's should stay home and clean up their own mess.

It's certainly an option, and I could see my wife and me doing it. Capitalism without Socialism is a dead end, and we can see this starkly now, if you have half a brain. I can afford to split, but many cannot. Capitalism eats its young. Every other person in America is as stupid as a fence post.

Please don't, we already have a greying population and exploding costs in care because of that, and short staffed. We don't need elderly from other countries coming here as well and reap the benefits of what we have built.

Your generation has been in charge of damn near everything public, private, and nonprofit since the 90’s and look where we are now. Such losers even refused to retire and held on to the jobs and houses. And now that the medical system that boomers refused to fix is too expensive you’re leaving.

But we don't like it. Most places people speak English to some degree, but hate not being able to speak their own language when ordering a coffee. Tourism is already being battled in some cities and many Nationalistic parties are getting a lot of votes. The US isn't popular atm anywhere.

It is not only the language, also the culture. The UK is different than the USA. We Swiss notice this with German expats who have to learn that the German speaking part of Switzerland is different than Germany.

Call these US retirees for what they are: Refugees from a shithole country that they've created for themselves. To establish permanence, there are rules to follow, and many will not be able to do so. Historically there has been a ton of good will with Americans, trust which is destroyed each day.

Biggest challenges have been 1. humidity caused mold = marine heaters in closets and house cleaner 1 x week. 2. Learning to slow down to local pace of life. 3. Driving on curvy narrow roads. 4. Gardening to grow food and fighting bugs that want my veggies. 5. Being snake aware.

Costa Rica now has its 2nd female president. Yes she is politically right wing, but not crazy. Certainly there are problems here too. But it has been great for me. I am a small town girl and like Nuevo Arenal. Small but has most all I need. Lots of expats here. Mostly over 60.

Looked at New Zealand, Australia, Ecuador, Spain Portugal... Costa Rica had the balance for me: cost of living, biodiversity, 17 climate zones, affordable private health care, national health care, multiple political parties... not the cheapest place, but affordable compared to Alaska.

I’m an American living in Portugal. It is cheaper, the food is amazing, the people are friendly and the climate is hard to beat. The best part? It is so peaceful. You really don’t realize how much anxiety you’re carrying around until you go some place where you’re not. It’s completely worth it.

Yeah? That hasn’t been my experience, I guess it depends a lot on how respectful one is to the culture and how one treats people. Personally, i’m sick of negative twats eager to inject anger into otherwise civil conversations. But that’s just me.

No, it doesn't. Being respectful towards the local culture should be the minimum. But when you have loads of immigrants paying 2x or 3x of what rentals should cost, locals can't compete, and that's a problem. Maybe it hasn't been your experience because we are polite, but believe me we think it.

Lisbon and Algarve is not cheaper anymore. Prices of housing went so up . Unless you bought your place at least 2 years ago . I live in very small town in Algarve and prices doubled from 2 years ago . Over the river on Spanish side I can buy bigger place for less money.

So you live same place like I do . I saw today in our small town advertisement that 2 bedroom apartment is selling for 450 000 euros . That is not cheap for town under 20 000 people. It’s brand new , but no garden, nothing.

In VRSA . It’s amazing. We have meeting every Friday ( about 70 , possibly more) and Wednesday in Castro Marim another 30 plus . We try to help each other. It’s very well organized by lady who started both meetings

Aging Americans voted Trump in to fight immigration and stop foreigners from chasing their dream, while they flee the consequences to live their best life in Europe. The Americans revealing their hypocrisy.

THIS> they probably made enough money from the broken American capitalism till death system and then just split and enjoy our socialist systems while leaving the wreckage to the young people there. Nope. Anyone over the age of 45 can stay out thanks.

You had better be well-financed, or young with a portable livelihood, to make this work. There are far nicer countries than the US. Finances and culture shock still matter. Too many seem to think emigration means little more than buying a one-way airfare(!).

I feel sorry for EU for having all these Americans choosing to live in their countries… hopefully they are the more cultured, and kind ones - not divisive and “why don’t they speak English” types

and they are becoming more and more unwelcome.. especially those who come abusing european health care.. seriously if you dont like how the US is run, its a f-ing democracy vote like your health depends on ti.

This is literally why I stopped worrying about a retirement plan. We're delusional if we think those systems or currencies will still be in place by the time we hit the corporate approved retirement age of 86.. or that most of us will even be alive by then. If Trump isn't removed, we all die.

Got one opening up next year. I assume our 202 mile long river is the water that they will be using because they have no other water source. No big deal just several towns having to reduce their water or drink contaminated water.WINNING!

Unfortunately due to the current administration(s), Americans, along with Israelis, are the now the most unpopular and disliked people around the world..sort it out at home ..then we'll see...

I love Europe / the other western nations, but I won’t be moving there. I’m not going to be pushed out of my country by Orange Adolf, I won’t. I will travel there, but won’t be moving there. Democracy loving nations must prevent Nationalism to spread hate and violence against free people.

Retirement? Bahahahahahaha ok Boomer! I might try to move to Europe, but I think the Trump-Epstein Billionaires have killed any hope that we’ll ever retire, most of us won’t ever even own a home! Oh… were you only talking to boomers? My bad. They’ll do whatever they want.

I agree! The people who can afford to retire to Europe predominantly voted republican and made the USA this awful! They need to stop supporting the pedo-protecting republicans and vote for the future of our country not the bank accounts of psychotic billionaires!

I disagree. Every American I met here actually are very liberal, this is the reason why they moved to Europe, they escaped Trumpism - their words not mine .Republicans don’t like “ socialism “ . Actually, I met only one Trumpster from Florida and she is stupid you would not believe it .

Oh I for sure believe that! Things have just gotten harder and harder to get out of the USA though because everything keeps getting more and more expensive. I’m also coming from a bitter place because the billionaires in the Epstein files own penthouse apartments in cities I’d love to be homeless in

Thank you for sharing this. I’m very liberal and love Europe. I was thinking of retiring somewhere there just because I like it. I love history and architecture, the nature of Europe. Now, I don’t know what to do. Stay and fight, or escape while I still can. It’s very frightening to be here now.

I left the UK becasue of the high cost of everything and lack of work to the US now its the opposite but I won't go home due to Brexit the dark chance of what might happen there but the US is still at the moment a better place to live for work

It's where I'm headed and I'm from there I can go back legally for the rest of my life and get free health care f*** the United States I'd like to live out my life in freedom and not have to hear or see from the origin snot ball everyday

I’m an 🇺🇸 who’s Been in Italy for 2 weeks. It’s amazing. No stress with 24/7 “breaking news”— the food quality is way superior to the pesticide sprayed food that we get in US. The people are friendly- they get outside to enjoy their beautiful cities. Oh, you don’t have to worry about getting shot.

I wish I could afford to move to France, just for the Louvre, Notre Dame Cathedral, spectacular architecture and croissants! Or London or Liverpool to immerse myself in the Beatles. Actually, anywhere but our newly crowned shithole country. Thanks a billion, Diaper Don for ruining our country.

trump is an azzhole and is ruining the US. There is nothing positive about him. He's a big negative when it comes to making America great again. As a Democrat I'm not impressed with his performance. REPUBLICANS have a lot to answer for! VOTE AGAINST REPUBLICANS! ALL OF THEM!!!

Expatriating" in a legal sense—formally giving up U.S. citizenship—is tracked by the IRS and the Federal Register. This number has spiked dramatically in the last two decades, largely due to the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act.

Exactly! This is the take away. We are "the wealthiest nation on the planet" yet people are leaving for affordability and a better way of life. Laughable if it were not so sad. I suspect we will next be seeing labor immigration waves to less developed nations, for jobs and an opportunity to work.

All I’ve seen is American evangelicals asking about relocating to France. And to be totally honest, they can f@ck right off! Patronising they need saving comments. The last thing we need is a cult trying to push their beliefs on us. Stay home and plant some of your churches up your asses …

As a Norwegian, I would rather welcome Mexicans, Africans, Asians or whatever before I welcome Americans. Your lack of humanity and humbleness makes you unfit to live among Europeans. Spend your money and your last years on building a more humane society in the USA.

As an American, I feel this. I vote for progressive democrats because I know what Europe is like and that’s what I want, but I feel held hostage by misinformed Republican voters! We could have EVERYTHING good about Europe if we just stopped voting for the psychopaths who want to make the rich richer

No they weren’t. Americans are dumb enough to elect a fraudster because they thought they would be okay, but all the people they hate would suffer. Low grade education across the country predates Musk by decades. Y’all just gullible idiots who dont give an F about America. Just yourself.

You don’t sound too bright yourself. It’s possible that BOTH things are true; dumb magats voted (again) for trump AND the 2024 election was stolen by musk. Get a grip. Nobody wants to move to England; it’s on its way to being as untenable as the US.

lol I get it, I can’t even be offended. As an American, I can’t guess how people can be this stupid, greedy, racist and cruel… and do it all in the name of their Lord. But… if you change your mind, I pick up my own trash, pay my own way, love different types of people, I don’t judge …

No doubt Graham hates Trump and MAGA (and apparently all Americans) who came to power mostly pushing anti immigration (America First). But ironically Graham is basically EU MAGA himself. US should take in all immigrants fleeing their countries, but “fuck off” if you’re a US citizen looking to move

If you do come over: ADAPT, learn the local language, participate and don’t try to bring american ways, dressing style, and your loud voice style here. also leave your sense of entitlement back home. You are refugees not returnees. And pay your local country’s taxes. #spotanamericanamileaway
