I heard him recite it while I was driving and I thought there was no way a deist like Jefferson would have ever composed it -- especially the last words -- "all of which we ask through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen."

I don't want to excuse Johnson, but is this a negative we can prove? There's a difference between "we can't confirm that Jefferson ever said a word of this, and given what we know of his beliefs the attribution is wildly implausible" and "We know Jefferson never said this, here's the proof."

We don’t need to prove the negative. Mike Johnson is saying, without anything to back it up, that this was *so important* to Thomas Jefferson that he made it *daily prayer*, despite no good evidence of that, because he wants to push a nativist message.

It’s on Mike to prove the suspect quote is authentic if he wants to use it in this way. Otherwise, we could all make up quotes about dead people whenever we want, and historians would be powerless to argue.

MAGA playbook; -Blame all problems on "aliens" -Inflame bigotry against trans -Vow revenge on critics -Lie and cheat -Abandon the sick and poor -Embrace violence -Proclaim faith and praise Jesus This phony, mangled version of Christianity is just for show to manipulate gullible voters.

On and on they go with how honest Mike Johnson is. He has lied many, many times, the likes of which have never been seen. He does it daily, like Trump, but more eloquently. Yesterday he insinuated that the terror attacks are tied in with the border. Today, this.

You know, it would be one thing if smart Republicans were in charge. But the problem is that ignorant Republicans are in charge and that just perpetuates anti-intellectualism on their side, which has become a real problem in America.

Agreed. Reading the Declaration of Independence while keeping in mind that King George was also the head of the Church of England makes it clear that our founders were establishing a secular government.

The USA was not founded on individual rights and freedoms. The rich land owners wanted all the benefits from the plunder of indigenous property for themselves. It was a classic mafia move to cut the original gang (Great Britain) out of the action.

True dat. Earns a follow. I just finished "The People's History of the United States". If it's sitting half-read on your shelf, ss it did on mine for 20 years, tough read, but it's time.. Our nation was built on a foundation of white privilege, class, wealth, racism and sexism. None resolved.

In addition, both Washington and Adams assured Jews and Muslim that it was not a Christian nation but allowed everyone to worship as they will (Washington's letters to a Jewish congregation). The first country to recognize the United States as an independent nation was Morocco before colonization.

They lie just to show that they can, and that there are no consequences. They just want us to understand that there is no accountability. The more they do what they want with no consequences, the worse they're going to get....

But he did say: "I consider the government of the US. as interdicted by the constitution from intermedling with religious institutions, their doctrines, discipline, or exercises." And I say 'Amen, brother' with appropriate irony.

Come on…you can’t expect the Speaker of the House to know that Jefferson never said that…he’s a Republican, and even worse, a MAGA Republican. He’s forgiven (by Jesus) so he can lie and mislead all he wants!!!

How is it a surprise that Johnson would openly lie to serve his own purposes? Never in the history of the United States has a President-elect been forced to rely on toadies and pathological liars to improve public opinion. Jan 20 will be stage managed because few want to witness it.

A single point. The Monticello link references the "National Book of Common Prayer." A quick search gives no results. Is this the Episcopal church's BCP? That would make more sense. We're the old Church of England, our founders were largely the US founding fathers.

OK, yeah like they were just referring to the ordinary BCP of the Episcopal church then. Jefferson was spiritual, but not "Christian", and regarded Jesus as not diety but rather as the greatest philosopher of all time. He took a razor to the Bible and today it is the Jefferson Bible.

Wait - Christian Mike breaking another commandment? Shocking. Oh well, he can just ask his imaginary friend for forgiveness and BAM - all is good in the Johnson household. A convenience us atheists don't have.

MAGA is terminally stupid. Just today, I see Matt Gaetz posting about "Marshall law" not martial law; Trump whining about flags being at "half-mast" instead of half staff; and Johnson cribbing right-wing disinformation as he resumes as speaker of the US House of Representatives.

Who cares what he said or recited. The entire party tells lies daily as a matter of course. And their so called dysfunction apparently has no impact on elections. 100% focus is needed on what they do and not what they say.

When is everybody gonna wake up and understand that these guys care nothing for the truth? Good christian and porn tracked Mike Johnson worships at the alter of trump, truth left the GOP building a while back

Give him some credit here. He probably doesn't know Jefferson was a President. And no way does he know he was part of the Democratic-Republican Party. His head would be spinning on the floor as he barfed pea soup

The other silly misappropriation is attempting to use him to support gun control (not against gun control, just against not understanding Jefferson's position on guns, or just lying). Jefferson was a Deist, and edited a New Testament that was only what Jesus was credited with saying.

Oh man. I’m so offended by this misappropriation. Not just saying this because I’m a librarian. I’m saying it because I am a literate American who knows how to do my research and check my facts.

Feed the poor. Serve the needy. Show compassion to all you meet. “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” It seems to me that the Magnificent Mike and his MAGA Minions are missing the point. But hey, I’m just a retired nurse who’s not as smart as all of them. 🙄
