i have done what many said is impossible. i have made an order guide for playing the entire kingdom hearts series, for normal people. i hope this can be a helpful resource to at least one person out there:

docs.google.comKingdom Hearts: Normal Person OrderNormal Person Order A complete guide for the entire Kingdom Hearts series, in release order, as simply as possible, without missing anything. by headfallsoff Introduction It may feel intimidating to...

"Normal Person Order" and involves thorough instructions on how to follow Nomura as an auteur over the years. Absolutely preposterous lmao well done

oooh wow thank you for doing this work! It’s so nice to have this all in one place and I appreciate the clear explanations and links!

someone else is probably saying this, but if you want a no-html-involved option for hosting this somewhere other than gdocs, i would suggest tumblr or dreamwidth, especially since this is primarily text and links with One image. both free to sign up, basically no account setup, formatting built in

yeah i should make a webpage version and get this off googledocs but i have no experience at that and no time rn but if enough people think this is a useful resource i will look into it

huge respect for including the 4 most relevant disney movies (tho i think i would also rec sorceror's aprentice like someone in comments did: thats smart) and suggesting to watch advent children and versus xiii. good place for non disney familiar people (they do exist!) to begin

A little note: You put the TWEWY under a Nomura check-in, but it would be better placed as relevant media for Dream Drop Distance (iirc that’s the only game with a The World Ends With You crossover)

i’m assuming most people will ignore the relevant media list and just use it mostly to check if there’s something they are specifically interested, i pulled out twewy because it’s more important in ddd than all the other cameos and is what a lot of the team worked on before days

it is so funny to me how Days has become a beloved entry in the series when everyone absolutely HATED it when it came out lol anyway this is the most sicko definition of "normal" possible but unfortunately I have to agree that this is the best blend of comprehensive and reasonable. bravo I guess

Basically going release order is the way to go and that means the giant bundle and emulating 358/2 I went into 3 knowing very little of coded and the mobile games and other than some random box being carried I know basically everything?

This is probably as long as the Everglow playlist but somehow it feels so much less scary. Wait, is the BBS order Terra-Ven-Aqua? I always thought that Terra was second so you could think "is he bad now?" It was not a well written mystery but... Maybe I need to replay BBS too.

I've been thinking of replaying the whole series since I never actually played 3, but this confirms my thought that I should play 358/2 again instead of just watching the cutscenes

having just watched Everglow's KH Union Cross video I don't quite understand the criticism about the context textboxes. i haven't really felt spoiled about anything that was going to happen? there are so few of them through the video too

i just really like chi and i think starting the video by explaining "okay for the first ninety minutes we're in the real world" thing up top is such a bad decision for telling that story

i think that game's story is really cool too. i haven't felt bothered by that mention, at least it helps set up the world of that game compared to everything disney-wise i kind of forgot about that textbox after like 10 minutes tbf with how dense the story gets

its still fine like most people do watch everglow's videos and they'll get you by no problem but i do think in the moment it makes chi's storytelling weaker. i wish the tendency online was to split up chi and union x's storytelling more explicitly because they are technically different games

it was very difficult prior to watching that video to understand the difference between chi and union cross lol. near everyone says it's a remake of the first game but also kind of not

charity stream starting with Sleeping Beauty and going through the entire order. stream doesn’t end until we’re fully caught up. one trillion donations every time we watch a versus xiii trailer.

quadratum is actually the nova crystallis world where lightning is. thats why it's weird versus xiii stuff. a fantasy based on reality. sora passed through etro's gate. follow the money

Was curious how this was gonna be, then I saw TWEWY in the recommended side media after KH2, and I knew this guide was Objectively Correct.

You probably should watch the Union X fandub before playing 3 but it's not super necessary, and you can watch Re:Chain of Memories cutscenes instead of playing it if you find the gameplay too bad, since it is bad.

I think I did the correct and normal thing where I listened to Lore Reasons then I watched a like 100-episode YT playlist that recaps the lore in chronological order beginning with the mobile game, and then I listened to lore reasons again

You know, at the time I was thrilled by Auron’s inclusion in KHII, but his whole storyline in that game really is a MASSIVE spoiler. Considering that the other FFX(-2) characters in Kingdom Hearts exist independently of their source games, that was kind of a jerk move.

I would suggest adding the 358/2 days manga as an option, since it's the most complete (and imo, the best ever) version of the story officially available, but I don't think it'd qualify for "normal people". It cuts less than the cutscene compilations though!

ultimately i decided to focus on canon entries and their direct youtube archives because i think bringing up the novels and manga would confuse a newcomer but i might slightly reword 358/2 days to emphasise just how much worse the "movie" is. it's like reading the wiki page lol its not the same

Oh yeah, in my head Days is the only one you can do this with because the episodic nature of the game lends itself to the comics medium the best. It's just very damning that the manga spinoff conveys the story better than the custom-made cutscene compilation they've been selling since 2013.

there's different levels. do you play the PS2 versions before final mix. do you play chain of memories and re:chain separately. do you play coded episodically. do you watch the union x quests when they came out over a decade? these are all arguments KH fans have when talking about order lol

As someone that played the first 2 when they came out (so I was 7 and 10 respectively) and never really dove DEEP into the lore this is all fascinating to me.

well originally it was 2 collections and days was on the first one which made sense purely on a workload perspective with 2 games and 1 movie per release. why they didnt re-order the menu for the complete collection WHO KNOWS

this leaves out multiple games and ruins 358/2 and II lol. i know you can just play the games on the disc and wing it but this is for someone who *does* want to see everything but doesnt want to go back and forth between different mobile game videos etc

my intent here is to include everything, in close-enough release order, with links right there on the page to videos for anything missable or delisted, and to highlight the few crossovers that are the most significant. it is meant to be fill a middle-ground niche for newcomers to the KH fandom

i wanted to make the gap between 'just play the numbered games it's fine' and 'knowing all the mobile and versus lore' as easy to cross as possible. it's really just a few youtube videos you can watch slowly over a month and you'll be there

still very funny to see people still act up in arms that they might have to watch stuff abt versus 13 or watch mobile game story recaps in this day and age of kingdom hearts. im sorry to say they are basically almost entirely mandatory now lmao

I have two complaints. Why is it that you included a section on how important to the story each game is but didn't for DDD, the game that seems the most like an unnecessary spin off but is the only spin off besides BBS to directly set up KH3?

for the same reason i didnt include one for kh1 and 2 i feel like ddd speaks for itself. i think i only included those notes for the games where i was like DONT SKIP THE DS GAMES lol

It doesn't because you are writing for people who don't know Kingdom Hearts, why would anyone assume a 3DS game called KH3D Dream Drop Distance *is a direct sequel to KH2 and covers all content between KH2 and KH3* that is precisely the tomfoolery you should be highlighting 😭

honestly i think its more likely i fix this going the other way by toning down the references in the other paragraphs to which game is and isnt important. i kinda wanna leave that to the player, i dont want to tip my hand either way. i'm assuming the reader is someone who wants to play everything

Second complaint: This isn't easy to read. So much scrolling, so much relevant media, this is an Atlas of KH content, not a normal person's guide. Easiest way to address thia: summarize the order at the top, not the bottom.

yeah i went back and forth for this reason because like. its long specifically because i want it to have all the links, the guide is pretty simple but its big because its also a reference document. maybe i'll put a link up top like if you just want the list go to the last page

That being said I need to give you your flowers, this is a large undertaking and its pretty complete all things said. You covered a lot of bases and even included relevant info on pretty niche subjects. Everyone will have an opinion but you laid out what needed to be here and that's what counts

I'm not sure why I expected there to be jokes in here. Thankfully, this is legitimately more or less the answer I would give as well (though admittedly I opted for the DS movies, only watched any Versus XIII stuff *after* seeing the KH3 superbosses beaten, and I've never truly touched FFX).

because his dub of chi edits back cover in chronologically even though you are meant to watch it after and it relies on playing with your knowledge of the events of that game. i think if there was an edit without the back cover scenes i might have chosen it but he's not made one unfortunately

yeah i havent watched it all myself because i dont wanna watch hours of union x again lol but from what i saw it seems fine, i just went with the same channel for both games for consistency in the guide

As a casual KH fan, I would put links to the fandub as an option for the mobile game. It makes some weird choices in the first part with the Back Cover scenes, but I tried watching the regular cutscenes upload and I was SO fucking bored. I only saw the whole thing a week ago when I found the fandub.

i would have chosen the fandub if it wasnt for that back cover thing, which i think is so egregious it torpedos the whole thing. then i stuck with the same uploader for union x for consistency. if damo ever makes an edit of the first fandub that's just chi i will probably switch

there's also the kingdom hearts theatre videos which are extremely high effort and fandub lots of text only scenes and i found them like great then they immediately start editing 358/2 and the 2 prologue into the same game and its like. well okay thats no longer the same thing lmao

Here's an honest Q How much do you need to know about the Disney *parks* lore for KH, especially KH3? Nomura *allegedly* came up with a few of the ideas at DisneySea (sea-salt ice cream etc) so is much (IYHO) knowledge needed here or does this get myopic?

Excellently done. Gets my Seal of Approval. Anyone that has wanted to get into (or back into) Kingdom Hearts in prep for 4 but don't want to go full Sickos with it, this is The Core Text in as close to an ideal order as you can get without overcomplicating it.

Very entertaining- it's the nature of the guide, but listing TWEWY as something like an optional sidenote to understanding KH feels like an inversion of morality to me

By that I mean, if you already have enough terminal RPG brain to sit through 300+ hours of Kingdom Hearts, and you're asking "do I really have to play TWEWY too", I'm shaking you by the shoulders and saying "you should have just played TWEWY instead of Kingdom Hearts!"

I would also argue there's vanishingly little to like about Dream Drop Distance if you haven't already played TWEWY, if you take out the TWEWY pretty much all that's left is Xigbar's best line ever

My one criticism is that I think The Sorcerer's Apprentice should go along with Sleeping Beauty et al in the "series-long relevance" tier, just because Yen Sid is a major supporting character and it helps to sort of... "ground" the idea of "Mickey Mouse, Wizard King"?

Like that's something people often make fun of but when you contextualise it as "this is a grown up, more mature Sorcerer's Apprentice Mickey" then it kind of falls into place.

hmmmm this one is a good point i’d been assuming oh mickey mouse yknow everyone knows but i guess it is sorcerers apprentice stuff specifically

Thanks for this!! I’ve played all of these multiple times over the years (including TWEWY - appreciate that one tossed in) but when it all comes to switch I’m going to make a KH pilgrimage play through, and this guide will be very helpful 💕

In the eventuality I get back to KH (my first attempt stopped 2h into Chain of Memories lol), this is exactly the kind of guide I'd be looking for. Hopefully I'll find the time someday, until then it goes in my Links Hall of Fame.

great guide, only note is that imo re:coded suffers the most with watching the movie vs playing the game because none of the lore in it is very interesting or particularly important from what i remember but the gameplay is among the best in the series. def one id advise ppl to seek out if they can

I’d suggest adding something for BBS that mentions if you wanna do all the secret shit that you only need to play critical for Aqua, and something for if DDD is getting annoying as fuuuuuuck how to do the dream eater crafting glitch lol (not as important I just think it’s funny)

the bbs requirements are so annoying i kinda can’t believe they never patched it in the rereleases considering how narratively important it all ends up being

Trying to remember if there's any content worth playing the PS2 version for and remembered that after they didn't bother giving Zexion a boss fight in the original game, KH2 went and made it a proper "mystery", and holy shit, who was that for?

Strangely it's one of the few in the series where there are redeeming qualities. The others feel like loose button mashers. CoM has a battle system that once you learn it is absolute fire in boss battles but sucks so much when fighting normal enemies. It's the one game that has actual mechanics.

this is beautiful. As someone who's played like 80% of the series (missed re:coded, missed a lot of the mobile games) I'm excited to catch up on a lot of the relevant side stuff you listed. Melon mix looks absolutely incredible I can't wait to check that out too.

do you happen to know if anyone's done a text version of story recap - I did my game replays years ago so won't be doing another one, but I am replaying 2, days, re:coded and have some like gaps in my knowledge I'd love to refresh. The secret report doc is incredible btw wow

uhhhhh i mean there's always the novels lmao. and there's summaries for every game on khwiki. but other than that idk if someone's specifically made text summaries

First I thought this would be basic boring Kingdom Hearts play order, useful definitely, but nothing important for me. And then I hit the "watch Versus XIII trailers," and I realized this is great actually, and I have some homework to do.

this more seems like a “prepare to make your own theory video channel” play order than an “enjoy the games at all” play order buy the collections, play the games, you’re done

You forgot the Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC trailers for Sora (shows where his consciousness goes the multiple times he is forced into a coma) and Sephiroth (shows where Cloud and Sephiroth go after their fight in KH2).

Ff8 is so not important to kingdom hearts that they renamed the guy I dont think this is a bad primer guide but it's not for normal people, its for people like my wife, who is already obsessed

anything in the relevant media section is extremely optional that’s just to let people who do really care what crossovers are relevant, just in case

I understand that logically, and agree, but the ocd part of my brain feels the need to follow guides to a T, so optional stuff doesn't feel optional. And tbh, I feel like guides like this appeal the most to ocd people
