Not sure I have the extent of it but it sounds a lot like Trump wanted Carney to ease Canadian French language rules (and enrage Quebec) so the Ellisons could save a buck on localization

The ultimate tech-bro dream: treating linguistic sovereignty as a "latency issue" that can be optimized away for a better margin. Localization is just a bug to them.

Hehe. Let's see him poke the Office Quebecois de la Langue Français with a stick and see what happens. Hell, most franco Federalist Quebecois who'd stand shoulder to shoulder with the BQ & PQ to defend Quebec language & culture. As would a goodly number of the anglos, including me.

Agreed. The "fuck him" is pretty universal. However I've known too many reflexively anti-quebec anglos (granted I left 20+ yrs ago) to have faith in their doing it for Quebec culture. They'd do it anyway because fuck him, but grumpily and ostentatiously in English.

Even my father-in-law, who lived in the USA, is ashamed. There are the diplomatic consequences, but there is also the public image. And when I look at my family—who used to be very close to the U.S. but aren't anymore at all, regardless of whether they lean left or right...

And Carney said during the Q and A that the US negotiating team wanted limit Canada’s ability to sign other trade deals with other countries at the 11th hour, which was obv a non-starter

His comprehension is better definitely, understood all the questions from francophone reporters. Keeps putting an "l" in couture though, and forgetting to put eg jamais at the end of the clause. It's acceptable bilingualism plus he's also defended french against the yanks

This is likely true, but definitely not the most egregious thing they were trying to change. Trying to prevent Canada from signing trade deals with other countries was the most obviously absurd ask.

US made last minute changes to an agreed upon deal that reversed US concessions, kept Canadian ones, added more concessions on Canada plus demanded we give US control over our critical minerals & trade with other countries. It wasn't trade, US tried to make Canada a vassal state.

well, and also probably oracle software which is by far the bigger ellison business. they’re just buying up media companies so they can pump aesthetic fascism into the brains of dumb dumbs.

obviously he's not going to go for that because he probably doesn't want his career to be over immediately. But I guess Deals Man didn't get to the part in Sun Tzu about understanding your opponent

It’s actually amazing that you can view Trump thru the lens of “what would the dumbest person you know do” in any given situation and he almost always does it

Either that or he did understand and knew the Canadians could not accept. If that's the game, Trump gets to make it look like the Canadians didn't play along so he can retaliate, rather than it being him not playing along. Does that make any sense? I don't know enough about what's going on.

“The UK should change its spelling, stop using those useless ‘u’s in words like color and favor. and what’s this “mum” business? It’s a 3 letter word, are they dumb (that’s got a b on the end, not many people know that)? It’s “mom”: m - o - m. Like SOS, which is what people say when they see me.”DJT

It's such an insane and stupid ask im honestly convinced that it was a deliberate move to scuttle the negotiations for no real reason (saving face?)

I'm intensely curious about this part of the (non)deal. What evidence is there about the involvement of the Ellisons, or other American oligarchs, in trying to kneecap Canadian requirements for bilingualism?

There is indeed a lot more but you’ve got the emotional center of the thing for Trump (which is always the most important part for a bunch of people who are still emotionally in middle school). Bon courage, les amis.

Political suicide for any Canadian PM to do it, but especially bad right now as Quebec will have a provincial election in a few months and every candidate would have no choice but to bash the decision nonstop.

If it's Ellison-related I'm going to hazard a guess that it has something to do with the Canadian French dubs being done locally the way a lot of shit in Spanish has two dubs (one for Spain, one for Latam)

Huh. But wouldn’t that mean the powers of the American government and the many interests of its people all being made subservient to the preferences and increased enormous riches of one family’s business? That’s not at all how our system works, is it? Sure not what I was taught in 10th grade civics.

you know, i doubt french subtitles are expensive, but packing for everything shipped in north america & mexico all has to be shipped printing in french/spanish/english. i don't know how much all that extra ink costs but i bet it adds up. i was racking my brain thinking why they would want that...

Would enrage Quebec for sure. But icydk out BC way (*very* few ppl speaking French) everything is still 100% bilingual—a fact 🇨🇦s have completely incorporated into their brains because that’s how their nation has officially decided to do it so fuck right off, orange man and no-eyebrow boy

Carney is wildly popular in QC, which is huge for a guy from Out West, but even still he'd lose the province if he even considered doing that, which is a decidedly massive "Do Not Touch" line for Canadian Federal politicians.

I worked the polls at the last federal election, posted in a retirement community, and the level of "this is the guy, fuck Trump" from several hundred elderly Québecois was off the charts.
