The developer behind Teach My Little Sister How to Drive, a driving generative AI-powered instruction sim, has been spending $1000 a day to keep the demo running, and now, they've had to take out a bank loan to keep up. https://bit.ly/4rWqe8g

Keep in mind folks, this is before token prices for the average person gets bonkers. If you thought game servers were a ticking timebomb for always online games, AI tokens isn't a line item you can forget about at the end of your expense sheet.

I would say "No one is stupid enough to have a function call that costs the developer actual literal money in their main game loop", but many long years on the internet have taught me that regardless of the hypothetical activity, belief, or con, yes, there IS someone that stupid...

I think that between China's huge power generation, reduced IP protections, and the fact that the research still looks like stupid garbage that won't revolutionize anything, the concerns about AI are significantly lower in an environment where the factors just don't come into play

However, the threat to entry level jobs and the concerns about it being a lying machine that lies is still in play, so they're all probably on the fence about things as they are

So what you're saying is that if I download this game- one which I had never heard of before seeing this news story- and play it, it costs the developer even more money and they may struggle to pay this loan back?

Hypothetically, but I would be more concerned with not building up the numbers that show there is an interest in this type of game. Better to show there is no interest than make people think it just hasn’t been tried correctly.

WHY do developers not think these things through? Did they think the losses for the demo were worth it if enough people would buy the full game after? Like how does this happen?

Surely someone here did the back of a napkin math and realized that if the game costs say $10, that gives them about 5 mil tokens (Sonnet 5.5) before them playing is literally cash negative. And that's before you factor in things like taxes and recouping development costs.

No AI involved. Cuphead devs gave up on everything and gambled basically on the success of the game. They had a lot to lose. They left their job, remortgaged their houses so they could develop the team and the game.

Wow they know their audience well, a game where your alone in a car with a little girl and now with ai they can talk about anything with her. I wouldn't be surprised if Sam Altman was an investor.

I didn't think about this element but yeah, it definitely makes me feel more than a little weird that generative AI would be used to his degree in a driving simulation game. Something feels off.

love to have my product be inextricably tied to a subscription service I have no control over

Yes? Those have multiple process, designed for the flow of math involved in traversing a model. The voice to text and text to voice is even simpler; not only do phones do it but very small devices can do it. Their accuracy can vary, of course, but... ...Most of the big compute is for training.

What is their endgame here? Every player represents a serious threat to their bottom line. This isn't a situation where low-spending players are offset by keeping the game alive for high-spending players; this is a single-player game where anyone can chew through tokens all day long.

these are deeply unserious people. how are they expecting this AI slopfest of a game to push enough units to justify the $1000/day price of running it? At this point I feel like it would need to *consistently* be the bestselling game ever made just to break even.

Any business model like this fails to account for the guy that will use their api key to churn out dogshit romance novels to spam on amazon with a jailbreak and new instructions and single-handedly bankrupt them.

You'll see this then do that award puppet monkey side glance meme face looking at every llm provider that's had to either switch to token based billing or make increasingly expensive license tiers as cheaper tiers get more restrictive. That price he's paying is as cheap as it'll ever get baby boy.

Here's the funny part, the game isn't out yet. This is for the demo because he's a fucking moron. I assume he's single because if I was related to him i'd have told him to abandon this particularly stupid dream before we go bankrupt.
