Bluesky now has over 20M people!! 🎉 We've been adding over a million users per day for the last few days. To celebrate, here are 20 fun facts about Bluesky:

1. The name Bluesky was originally a placeholder for the project started by Twitter to build an open social protocol. Purely by coincidence, my mother gave me the name Lantian, which translates to "blue sky."

2. Here's an image from a presentation I gave to Twitter, representing the Twitter bird freed from a closed platform to fly in Bluesky's open ecosystem.

6. Custom feeds on Bluesky are the first implementation of algorithmic choice. Instead of using a single black-box For You algorithm, you can create and subscribe to your own. Now, there are over 50k+ custom feeds on the network! Check them out: bsky.app/feeds

10. The three largest countries on Bluesky are the United States, Japan, and Brazil, and these countries were early adopters since our invite-only days as well. Thank you for being here! 💙

Thank you for sharing that history! So glad that Blue(r) Sky(s) are here! It's such a breath of fresh air to be part of this community. Blue Kudos to you and your team!

I would guess this is negligible/irrelevant at the moment. They had ±10M users last week; ±20M users this week. The thread mentioned "what's hot" used to qualify as 5 likes. It's still small but doubling in size in roughly a week is impressive.

I joined before the site hit 2.6 million but only recently started posting regularly. I think I was originally on a waitlist that turned into an invitation. I'm happy to be here, and I hope the site's culture remains like it is now!

In terms of timing, as an artist shifting geography, the word would be auspicious. The other word, coming from y'all on the supplier side, would be conscientious. Thank you for holding to your views. The last word? Overjoyed. 🦉🍁🪔

Hi, I managed to experience before it became public to all. I felt Bluesky was on to great things purely because of the straightforward approach of the user experience. And tried mastodon and .Post and so forth. Bluesky also feels much more structured.

I remember trying to set up an account. It wasn't easy, and Twitter was so by mistake. I stayed on Twitter until a couple of weeks ago. Geez, what a hateful place. I've now deleted it, and I could be happier.

I just joined a few days ago. I left Twitter about a year ago and have been on Threads. I’m loving it here. I hope you add an edit option. Sometimes our posts don’t come out as we expect so an edit button would really be helpful!

11. To help us catch bugs with long threads, we used to play the "counting game" during our invite-only days. Someone would post "1," and everyone would start counting up in that thread.

12. Back in the day, Bluesky's "algorithm" was called "What's Hot," and it showed any post that got over 5 likes. When our community grew, we had to up that to 8 likes.

Hello Jay, I hope you’re doing well! I’m seeking a role at Bluesky as a Product Design intern. Based on my experience as a product design intern at the bulb africa and as a freelancer, I believe I could contribute positively to the organization's goals while I grow as a product designer

Are you open to a quick chat to discuss the position? I’d love to learn more about the organization, and share more about my own qualifications. I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards, Rejoice Obosi

I cannot believe we are at a point so quickly to be able to say "back in the day" and it still be a decent period of time *post-pandemic* (feels good, though!)

I'm from Spain. ALF was a phenomenon on national TV (we only had two channels). It was broadcast on Sunday afternoons when we were partying. I programmed the video recorder to watch it when I got home. You've won me over with ALF.

Here's a bug with long threads in Thread view: You keep indenting self-replies until you run out of width and then truncate the thread. Don't indent further on a self reply, put it straight underneath.

If there are no other replies along the full loaded depth (where it "truncates," which doesn't change based on this), it puts the self reply straight underneath. Otherwise it indents. It could be smarter by only indenting where non-self-replies show up. It's open-source tho, go suggest a change! 😉

The issue is definitely that a 20 posts thread is pushing it... Definitely not a bug, because the whole point of this view is that replies visually connect to what they respond to. Agree though that a fallback to display longer 5+ self reply threads initially on the same level would be nice.

The other view does apparently collaps a thread after 10 self-replies with a "continue thread..." link, which is definitely missing in the threaded view where there's no indication that the thread goes on... Hope they add that to threaded view, but it being still "experimental" there's hope :)

Did the same at the weekend. Just thought f@#k m@#k. Didn't know about #Bluesky until I googled "what's an alternative to twitter" I'm settling in nicely. Greetings from #offaly. Hon the faithful.

congratulations, guys, and keep it up!!! what about Ukraine in terms of countries representation, Jay? your platform is getting traction here as I can see. though subjectively, sure thing.

Would love to get an updated number on this - you are getting a lot of traction from Denmark right now 🇩🇰 (and could be fun to see it weighted after population - we are only some 5 million in total here)

Look into Fedilab, Friendica, Diaspora, Pixelfed, PeerTube, Session, Vidzy, FUTO apps, Proton apps, Tuta Mail, Mastodon, Vutuv, Element, Particl Marketplace, and any Fossify apps. Those are all great alternatives. Their apps are still being made or in beta Hope that helps
