Bluesky now has over 20M people!! 🎉 We've been adding over a million users per day for the last few days. To celebrate, here are 20 fun facts about Bluesky:

1. The name Bluesky was originally a placeholder for the project started by Twitter to build an open social protocol. Purely by coincidence, my mother gave me the name Lantian, which translates to "blue sky."

2. Here's an image from a presentation I gave to Twitter, representing the Twitter bird freed from a closed platform to fly in Bluesky's open ecosystem.

6. Custom feeds on Bluesky are the first implementation of algorithmic choice. Instead of using a single black-box For You algorithm, you can create and subscribe to your own. Now, there are over 50k+ custom feeds on the network! Check them out: bsky.app/feeds

7. Bluesky's data servers are named after mushrooms! Some of them include morel, enoki, shiitake, puffball, oyster... 🍄

How many mushroom types can you actually use? Must start struggling after 20... I love naming systems so id love to know how many you were able to decide on.

Yeah cause hedgehogvM, does that count? Or Honey? Destroying Angel is two words so i feel like its a bad codename? Is 'cap' too generic? Do you have cap but also powdercap and fibrecap? I feel like theres a line somewhere.

It'd be fun to draw those lines where they should be, and come up with a hundred good mushroom names. Gotta be able to use multi-word names though. Hen-of-the-woods, chicken-o-t-w, old man-o-t-w, shrimp-o-t-w, black trumpet, elfen saddle, king bolete, dog vomit slime mold, etc. The list goes on...

I am currious if "always open to developers" will still be around after getting to be a big tech company. So far they all started with the dream of net neutratility, only to create enclosed commercial chambers. Anyways, thanks so far.

What I want is this. Say follow somebody I have followed for years now and have high respect for, Suzie. What I want to be able to do is, to manually push a button and then this happens: Every User the Suzie has blocked, the blocked users get blocked on my account also. Add it to UR list ha-ha

does this mean i can connect my Readway app to Bluesky and our community can post both to Readway and Bluesky? I'm heading into docs. i am very excited. and the reason is that i share your ideas: decentralization, community, people choosing for themselves. it is going to be a sleepless night 🖐🏼

Hi Jay. If I promise to hang here for lots of years and lots of Blue Sky "tweets" and use the app all the time can you promise to never become a racist megalomaniac who endorses bigoted small-minded con artists? That would be a deal breaker for me.

10. The three largest countries on Bluesky are the United States, Japan, and Brazil, and these countries were early adopters since our invite-only days as well. Thank you for being here! 💙

Thank you for sharing that history! So glad that Blue(r) Sky(s) are here! It's such a breath of fresh air to be part of this community. Blue Kudos to you and your team!

I joined before the site hit 2.6 million but only recently started posting regularly. I think I was originally on a waitlist that turned into an invitation. I'm happy to be here, and I hope the site's culture remains like it is now!

In terms of timing, as an artist shifting geography, the word would be auspicious. The other word, coming from y'all on the supplier side, would be conscientious. Thank you for holding to your views. The last word? Overjoyed. 🦉🍁🪔

Hi, I managed to experience before it became public to all. I felt Bluesky was on to great things purely because of the straightforward approach of the user experience. And tried mastodon and .Post and so forth. Bluesky also feels much more structured.

I remember trying to set up an account. It wasn't easy, and Twitter was so by mistake. I stayed on Twitter until a couple of weeks ago. Geez, what a hateful place. I've now deleted it, and I could be happier.

I just joined a few days ago. I left Twitter about a year ago and have been on Threads. I’m loving it here. I hope you add an edit option. Sometimes our posts don’t come out as we expect so an edit button would really be helpful!

11. To help us catch bugs with long threads, we used to play the "counting game" during our invite-only days. Someone would post "1," and everyone would start counting up in that thread.

congratulations, guys, and keep it up!!! what about Ukraine in terms of countries representation, Jay? your platform is getting traction here as I can see. though subjectively, sure thing.

Would love to get an updated number on this - you are getting a lot of traction from Denmark right now 🇩🇰 (and could be fun to see it weighted after population - we are only some 5 million in total here)

Hi Jay and crew, I really hope you keep up with the principles you started with. For me no more X, no no more F. But what can you do about unwanted followers? Like this...

Is there an easily accessible place on the front page of the app where the guts of BlueSky's tech privacy policy can be accessed? I don't love that META and Stripe just sent me warnings for 2025 policy changes re: AI and my content. Considering a full jump to this platform...

I know that nothing is private anymore. However, I have already seen posts by developers who want to integrate AI into this platform much like Meta has with Facebook. My issue with AI is the lack of consent. I work in accounting, and security is a major concern. Will bsky become an AI platform too?

glad to hear that... why isn't there a toggle to opt out of blueskys telemetry (events.bsky.app), statsig, etc?? congrats on your well deserved success, glad your hard work finally paid off! 💙 🦋 🎉 please just don't forget where you came from! choice and privacy DO matter, and always will.

thread i made sharing my concerns in more detail: bsky.app/profile/cele...

💘@celenity.dev

overall i'm impressed with bluesky, BUT i have some privacy concerns i'd like to see the team address. these are crucial if bluesky is to live up to its goal & stated values. (THREAD INCOMING 🧵) to start, bluesky contains tracking from companies like sentry & statsig, with no way to opt out.

yes please please please someone to create files and folder like i had litteraly 100's while i was used to work with on Twitter ! that would be great! also i know it's coming but same for bookmarks ! last it would be great to have lists of distribution (to send spec files to spec groups) Cheers!

Does 'open' mean free in this context? Or that there will always be some way for devs to get access? I realize in the LLM-era unfortunately this is no longer something that can easily be promised, so I was hoping you could clarify. Thank you

The more I think about the underground network of mushrooms/fungi and how Bluesky has been developed, the more I see how brilliant this idea was! #kudos 🍄💞

That’s too cool! I love the amount of mushroom buddies I’m connecting with here. I just shared another one to my profile from the archives!
