Hi! I'm Hector πŸ‘‹ Time for a quick #introduction I think: - Software developer (10+ years) - Backend & a little frontend - Go - Kotlin - Svelte 🧑 - Exploring gamedev with Godot πŸ•ΉοΈ - Hosting my own stuff for fun 🏑 - Hiking, nature & traveling - Learning digital art - Plant-based 🌱 #promosky

When you schedule messages on Slack, do you mention it was scheduled? πŸ€” I usually don't, but I often wonder if I should. Just in case something changes between the time I wrote the message and the time it gets received. Is there any "scheduled message etiquette" I should know about?

Why is it that banks have such bad security practices when compared to pretty much anything else? One I came across: - User IDs are sequential - Passwords are 7 characters (only numbers) - 2FA only with SMS - Login asks for only 3 digits of your 7 number code 🀯

Random app idea I had yesterday: A dating/meeting app where you find people you are interested in based on each others code. It would connect to your Github and pull random pieces of code to show other people (nothing else about you). If you both like each other's code you could connect 🫢

The widespread use of AI in coding also makes this tricky, since your code nowadays will likely include a little (or a lot) of code generated by AI, also defeating the point of people "choosing" you because they like your code. I don't have a good answer for this one. AI to filter out AI code? πŸ˜†

I have no intentions of building this, but I find it fun to explore some of these ideas to see how they might (or not) work πŸ€”

One challenge would be making sure it's actually your code, and not either something someone else contributed to your repo, or a random repo you just copied and pushed. Maybe using code from PRs would mitigate this a little? Or a more complex system to detect and exclude copied code?

You could write code directly into the app, but that somewhat defeats the purpose of it being your "true self", since you would likely polish the code a lot more than you would if you were writing it for an actual project. By pulling random code from your account I'd hope to show the real you.

This morning I finally took the time to clean out my phone's USB-C port. Now the cable actually goes in all the way and doesn't fall out all the time! So satisfying 😌

TIL: Minifying the output HTML of a Svelte build is a bad idea πŸ€” I noticed HEAD elements were getting duplicated and I couldn't figure out why. Turns out Svelte actually uses comments in the markup to handle updates without duplication! So I broke it by removing them πŸ˜… github.com/sveltejs/sve...

github.comDuplicate `head` elements occur when html comments are stripped Β· Issue #8112 Β· sveltejs/svelteDescribe the bug The solution to the duplicate content svelte:head element bug (and also this one) requires HTML comments to be present in order to function correctly. Many minification tools strip...

The Github issue mentions turning off Cloudflare auto minify, but I believe that has been deprecated πŸ€” In my case it was my own fault - I added a build step to minify the HTML back when I was using 11ty and I kept it after the rewrite to Svelte. I never thought it would be an issue 🀷

I'm rebuilding my website (again) and I'm almost at a point where I'm happy with the new design. But then I go back to the live version and I think "hmm, this looks better than I remembered. Is the new version actually better? Or just different?" πŸ™ƒ

Yesterday I finally upgraded my laptop from Linux Mint 21.3 to 22.1! My favourite "feature" so far is that the fans no longer spin up as soon as I plug in the power 🀯

Came back to an old project I worked on a few years ago. Just wanted to make a few tweaks, nothing major. Now I'm trying really hard to resist the urge to rewrite it all πŸ™ƒ

Spent an hour banging my head against Nginx to get a reverse proxy working. Turns out the only problem was the port being closed on the firewall πŸ™ƒ

My next challenge is to allow clicking on a star to open the post it relates to. I know that is something people have been asking about! Just haven't quite figured out a good way to do it yet.

The response to this has been staggering. I expected that maybe a couple of people would think it was neat. I never thought thousands of people would try it! πŸ’™ For those who may be curious, the source code is now available here: gitlab.com/hctrdev/bsky...

I made a thing! I was playing around with the AT protocol and as a little experiment I made a website that visualises activity around Bluesky: nightsky.hctr.dev It listens to all new posts and shows them as little stars across a night sky πŸŒƒ Every star is someone, somewhere, posting something

I didn’t like the vibe of the last one with the black background. I’ve been toying with the Bluesky api again. I’m addicted. Here’s my most used emojis ever for all time. Generate #emojibubble here: skythings.lukeacl.com/emojis/. Warning if you yap a lot it’ll be slow to generate.

OK, this went a bit viral πŸ˜… I never thought so many people would enjoy this! It's been so lovely reading everyone's comments this morning. Thank you πŸ’™

Bluesky by the Numbers today: 1.3M people Posted 6.5M posts 2.3M people Liked 37.5M posts 2.9M people Followed 41.5M people (!!!!!) Over 1,000,000 people joined the network!!!!!! We broke all-time traffic records by over 30% today across the board. Follows are up 20x from 2 weeks ago! Holy Moly

I'm a bit new to this frontend development business, and I am genuinely enjoying it, but does it always turn into a kind of art project? πŸ€” In terms of UI I'm usually only worried about what to write in log messages.

The screenshot is from my self-hosted Grafana instance, which is pulling system metrics from my laptop using Prometheus. All over my @tailscale.com network. I think it's clever. Useless 99% of the time, but who cares? Graphs are cool 😎

I think my laptop is looking for a new battery πŸ™ƒ

okay well we're gonna add over 1 million users in a single 24 hour period today, so please bear with us.

Love this! So easy to start playing around with the protocol. Now, what to build? πŸ€”

Can’t say how approachable these packages make developing bots, labelers and jetstream consumption If you want to tinker with atproto def start with the jetstream package

Also - and I cannot emphasise this enough - twitter actively suppresses links. This is terrible for journalism - of any ideological stripe. Bluesky doesn't so it's a far better platform for writers.

Whether X is diverse doesn't really matter (the user base may even still skew to the liberal-left) - it's fundamentally to do with the fact it is no longer a level playing field for content and engagement.

So I guess we're just doin bigger numbers every day now. This is pretty damn exciting and I'm glad y'all are here and justifying the time we spent investing in scaling. Really feels special to see this 20% day over day growth in activity and the "fresh of breath air" new users are experiencing. πŸ’œ

I hate to bitch about engagement again because I know everyone is tired of it, but please remember to retweet things you enjoy. There's no punishment for it on bluesky, and no algorithm aside of the discover feed to push the artists you like.

Bluesky is now the #2 social app in the US, Canada, and #3 in the UK πŸ¦‹ On bsky, ~30% of y'all are posters compared to the 1% main characters on other platforms. Turns out there's more chattiness & connection when you have algorithmic choice 🀭

Took me way longer than I'd like to admit to realise that "bsky" makes a lot more sense as "B-Sky" than "B-S-K-Y" πŸ˜…

For hobby projects and experiments I have a little script that automatically commits all changes every 30 seconds. For small/private projects I just can't be bothered to write nice commits, but I still want a git history. Does anyone else do that? Or is that just me?Β πŸ€”
