Bluesky now has over 20M people!! 🎉 We've been adding over a million users per day for the last few days. To celebrate, here are 20 fun facts about Bluesky:

1. The name Bluesky was originally a placeholder for the project started by Twitter to build an open social protocol. Purely by coincidence, my mother gave me the name Lantian, which translates to "blue sky."

Sounds like destiny to me...and I'm sure from what I've seen already that you can keep creating a great positive experience for users and do a better job than Elon Musk has done with Twitter burning it to the ground to create X. 🥂

2. Here's an image from a presentation I gave to Twitter, representing the Twitter bird freed from a closed platform to fly in Bluesky's open ecosystem.

Really didn’t “get” how toxic the other place had become until I started hanging around here regularly. The lack of bots and (toxic, evil) replies is no joke.

My friends on the *other platform* have been reluctant to leave stating that your app wasn’t intended to turn a profit and thus fail. A cosmetic feature model for micro transactions is something I would be interested in (like Discord). How do you plan to profit long-term?

By public, I meant open to everyone and not needing an invitation. I found the date - February 6, 2024. Do you know what time the blog post announcing that invites were not longer needed was posted?

Is there a verb or noun to represent use of this platform - representing the sky or the butterfly - that is unique. Like we used to tweet but our voice was silenced when the name changed to the imprisoning bars of the black letter. “Post” seems too solid for Bluesky 🦋

I actually liked the regular blue sky logo more than the current butterfly. It felt more ephemeral, like it broke a mold compared to all the other apps that had some kind of shape in their icons.

I remember the clouds, I think i joined around then but was waiting for the invite to arrive. Its been fun to watch the growth. Ive followed since Jack greenlit the project during twitter days.

I joined early by invite and then waited patiently checking now and then to see how many more had fluttered over to this butterfly free from black imprisoning letter.

Hi Jay, Thank you for this amazing platform. Question: If trolls and/pr bots are discovered here is it reasonable to ask that our users post the name of the account so we can all block or is that a violation?

Can I 'opt out' of your web and safety team ? Can I tell religious jokes about bacon here ? MOAR censorship doesn't work for me, sorry. I got banned on reddit for using UNDERSCORES. WTF ?

Thank you, @BlueSky, for striving to create politically neutral social media. It's what the world needs—here's hoping it thrives and continues to exist. 🌍 #twitter #x #facebook #neutral

Congratulations on this extraordinary milestone! The image and the concept of the Twitter bird flying free in Bluesky’s open ecosystem are absolutely beautiful—such a powerful representation of what this platform stands for! 🦋

Here's another fun fact about the name. Though you could argue "blue sky" and "sky blue" may have slightly different meanings. 😆 Lantian vs Caesius

Q: What does the chemical element Caesium [Cs] and this social media platform have in common? A: Their name! Fun Fact: Caesium comes from the Latin for "sky blue", even though it looks silvery-gold and is liquid at 28.4C. It is the most reactive metal. Its emission spectrum is blue, however.
