Today I learned that Sam Alito, a sitting Supreme Court justice, has gotten personally involved in the fight to save a Christopher Columbus statue in his hometown, providing a statement to the city council about the "insult to the Italian American community" www.nytimes.com/2026/10/11/o...

Somebody tell them how the Columbus voyages were funded (monarchy), how he exploited the people he found here. "They would make fine servants... With 50 men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want."

Columbus’s 1492 voyage was backed by the Spanish Crown. What followed wasn’t simply “discovery.” It involved enslavement, forced labor, and exploitation of Indigenous peoples. History deserves honesty, not myths. Why celebrate the arrival while downplaying the human cost?

I love that even the Sopranos mentions that Columbus wasn’t “Italian”, he was Genoese (Italian unification wouldn’t happen for several hundred years) and would have hated them because the Genoese and Napolitani, Pisans, Venetians, etc. all hated eachother and were in constant conflict.

Nothing like commemorating your ancestors' oppressors bsky.app/profile/jake...

I feel pretty confident that present day Italian Americans who celebrate Columbus Day are blissfully unaware of Columbus' historical signficance to their heritage. The vast majority of Italian Americans in the U.S. are descended from southern Italy (Sicily, Naples, etc)

Over-privileged, over-entitled, rich, straight, White, fake Christian man feels insulted as he devotes the bulk of his professional life to insulting everyone else and degrading everyone else's freedom, autonomy, equality, and dignity. Quiet, piggy.

Columbus was sent back to Spain in chains and stripped of his titles for what was considered in 1500(!) to be extremely cruel behavior Then again it’s no surprise Alito would defend human trafficking and enslavement that occurred in 1500 when he’s defending the same things happening today

He was born in Trenton, but his hometown is across city limits in Hamilton Township, where my family has lived since late 2011 and where I would love to get this abomination taken down. Don't know why we are celebrating a fascist hack.

Look everyone’s all court packing this and ethics reform that, nobody wants to talk about that there is a 100% correlation between being an Italian Supreme Court justice and being a world historical asshole

Substitute any immigrant group that is being vilified today (Haitians, Somalis, Muslims, etc) for Italians in Alito's statement and see how quickly he and the rest of the white Christian nationalists hit the "Yes, but" button

You know, maybe we should lean into Columbus Day where they won’t let it go. Include all the atrocities, really talk them up in rich detail, share renditions, historical docs, documentaries , etc. show how his contemporaries were disgusted with him. Like let’s really highlight how vile he was.

This 2020 interview that Alito gave to the online magazine (I swear I am not making this up) We the Italians is even wilder. Sir, you are a *sitting Supreme Court justice*. Do you not have better things to do with your time. Wait, actually, don't answer that www.wetheitalians.com/news/top-ame...

Columbus never set foot on the continent, so maybe all those tired immigrants who showed up hundreds of years later could be better represented....

Considering his views on immigration and citizenship, I find it ironic that Alito so clearly considers himself not an American, but an Italian-American.

"That is a great insult to the memory of our ancestors, who had nothing to do with any of the things for which Columbus is now reviled." He's so close to getting it: they had nothing to do with Columbus and Columbus had nothing to do with them.

Responding to "can we all agree this guy was a raging assole?" with "who cares? He was Italian!" is maybe not the defense of your heritage that you intend.
