This "ai code/art is already everywhere and impossible to avoid so you should just relax about people using it" shit has to stop, it's not remotely true. Same exact shit as "it's the inevitable future!" or "you can't put the genie back in the bottle!!" We can literally do whatever the fuck we want

Epic is still going strong on NFTs. Though i think they dropped the name, but are still presenting "own skins between multiple games" as something anyone will implement(and won't be a licensing nightmare).

It is what Sweeney was saying the NFTs made possible. And i don't respect blockchain and crypto as a technology enough to say that replacing them with Epic's servers and v-bucks is a fundamental difference as far as mocking him for being the last NFT peddler goes.

Those are all pieces of what the metaverse promised. The metaverse itself is dead. You’re looking at scattered LEGO bricks left behind after someone cleaned up a shattered build. The build’s gone, those bricks are not the same construct anymore

you've just phrased that in a way that's convenient to you. "stop existing". no technology "stops existing". nfts still exist but they did in fact functionally stop existing. facebook's "metaverse". the fuckin kinect. apple vision pro in a minute. like what? of course technologies fail

if you're asking when it's been a result of people deciding not to use something on ethical grounds rather than not wanting to because it's shit, a) heaps of times b) same fucking thing

Nothing says "good faith discussion" quite like when someone gives you the "Hey everyone I saw you made a point here but have you considered you're wrong if I add a completely ridiculous condition you didn't say?" treatment.

It's like people who can't fathom a future without cars. You know we're a society right? We can just go "actually the benefits do not outweigh the costs" and outlaw shit, and it'll be gone forever.

its less so "relax about people using it" and moreso, "do your best about not using it, but there is an attempt to deeply integrate AI use. it still might touch your project" I don't think anyone's happy about it. people interpret it as doomerism when its more like an attempt at being measured imo

that feels very rigid but I guess we can disagree regardless, Gen AI is a scourge and we should push back against the concerted effort to inject it into daily life by tech companies as much as possible

In coding it means that even with factoring in edits, and rewrites, they still estimate you will be more time efficient than you were. And even if you don't you'll look busier, "more productive". You'll also demonstrate the engagement with AI use that many CEOs are mandating.

It's the exact same FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) language the cryptocurrency and NFT bros would use: YNGMI ("You're not gonna make it") It's no surprise how many of the lay person AI boosters on Xitter you can dig back a few years and find them talking about how fugly JPGs are the future of art.

I'm mildly sure they said the same thing about chlorofluorocarbons in the 80s. Hair spray and cheap refrigeration is the future, you are just going to have to get over missing the ozone layer.

As an indie Unity dev I never touch the AI features, period, and pray to the gods for the day that shit will be removed from all software everywhere. NOTHING about my game uses AI. Absolutely everything about it is hand made.

And the insanity of "if you say you can do whatever you want, you're trying to shame people who use it". No, I just want you to stop talking and do whatever the fuck *you* want, which is probably jerking off to your stocks in that speculative bubble going up--

Or keeping your middle-management job and getting to see your family after being forced at gunpoint to slap me on the face with that swamp-water-soaked clutch of weedy cliches.

I'm afraid it's not far away from the truth. In a sense that each few examples of sloppy and blatant ai gen there is like 1000 of when it's not noticeable at all. Nobody should be relaxed about it though

People need to stop acting as if technology can only go forward. Not every idea is an innovation! See, for example: that time companies started putting radium in water because radioactivity was the new cool fad. We stopped after people got cancer.

Same goes for the "I have to engage with many other evils under capitalism, so too will I use AI". I shop at a supermarket that underpays its workers and advertises a TERF because I need to eat. I don't need AI, it adds nothing and already has enough social upheaval to destroy it.

People like to trot out agricultural water and energy use too, as if that’s not something keeping the whole dang population fed being compared to replacing competent labor with cheap facsimiles for no better purpose than to further enrich the wealthy. It’s an apples to hand grenades comparison

Exactly. I can’t always choose to forgo engaging with harmful systems, but I can choose to do my damn best to avoid perpetuating harm. I can choose to write an email with my own brain and draw art with my own hands.

wish AI disclaimers were mandatory though. Sometimes you can't avoid it because you just can't tell. Not because it's as good, but because it's very good at bullshitting, until you realise 2 weeks in.

“We can't put the genie back in the bottle” = “I won't risk being the first to take a stance because I'm mostly worried about being in the race to money”

“shit has to stop, it's not remotely true.” There are lots of stuff “not remotely true” coming from MAGA and MAGA is no showing any sign of stopping. It ain’t even “artificial”.

A brief list of bad things that used to everywhere that society pushed back on: Slavery Forced marriages Child Labor Unsafe drinking water Unsafe food Unsafe medicine Uneducated population Segregation Absolute Monarchs Just because an injustice exists doesn't mean we have to accept it.

This. thing about genie's is. they absolutely CAN be put back in the bottle. and in most stories, usually are, after they've been forced with the third wish to clean up the shit the first two wishes caused.
