the way the right has boiled discussion on transness by saying trans women will always be “biological males” is despicable because taking cross hormone therapy literally changes your biological birth sex. your sex and sex functions is no longer the same after taking hormones for an extended time

There’s a genetic mutation that stops the Y chromosome from expressing until puberty and children afflicted with it literally grow a penis at around 12 years old bc their hormones activate so I never understood the idea that long term and serious hormone usage wouldn’t change your biology whatsoever

I'm not trans but thanks to a fucking brain tumor I have gotten to experience hrt to maintain my gender. Started growing boobs and lost body hair when the tumor gave me the prolactin of a lactating woman. Along with the all to exciting dick problems too. The hormones literally changed my biology.

Also focusing on the idea of "biological" anything suggests it's entirely binary. Regardless they didn't give a shit about women's sports before and they don't give a shit about it now.

this may b 2Nuanced4 most cis ppl, but when some1 realizes they're trans, they might feel they were their assigned sex, and now they're a different sex - or they might have *never been* their assigned sex at birth in either case, even before* HRT/transition, their sex matches their gender.

I don't think it's enough to say that once someone takes HRT their sex has changed, that's true, but it's not the whole story. biologists look at all available traits/data to classify a person's sex, but the one thing they take as gospel above all else is what the person says their gender is.

if we're talking about animals or other organisms, if they could speak for themselves/if we could understand them, it'd be the same way. the organism's self-stated gender would be treated as more relevant in classifying their sex than any/all other traits.

and tbc I fully agree w/ u and don't wanna lessen the dramatic (amazing) physiological changes HRT has, I just wanted to add that even before or without any transition steps, a person can MEANINGFULLY change their biological sex or have always been the sex that matches their gender in the 1st place

Defining an entire human's existence based on their genitalia's role in mammalian reproduction is the most smooth brain drooling idiot stance. Humanity is VERY CLEARLY AND OBVIOUSLY much much more diverse and complex than that.

To be super cringe I don't think it changes your birth sex, as in your sex at birth, as that is a historical property. It changes your actual sex through time to what it is today. I do think it's rhetorically important to distinguish these two for two reasons: one is that whenever a transphobe...

says "we want to law to operate based on sex" it's a very easy response to say "you want it to operate on birth sex, not actual sex today/current sex" which sets you up to point out why that's important. Secondly, and I want to distinguish this from a similar sounding but importantly...

different trutrans position, it doesn't change what you used to be. Some people consider themselves to have always been girls/boys even before they came out or even knew themselves. It's not how I see it but I think that's fine, I'm not disagreeing with that. But that is separate from what your...

material sex characteristics were then. If we're making this sex has changed argument, which is true and so we should, then we need to be clear that it materially changes and changes our material circumstances. It's not retroactive

i think this point is where the sex/gender distinction can actually be useful rhetorically. I was always a girl even before I transitioned (even if i did not understand that at the time) but I was not yet female.

mmm. i agree with everything you said mostly but if you said this they would just say "okay we define your sex as your sex at birth a d we want the law to operate based on that" someone who wants these sex based laws already thinks they mean sex at birth and that sex is immutable right?

The deliberate ignorance of science in general amongst the far-right is despicable. They've also slandered the COVID vaccine while 1.2 million people died *so far*, and they've gutted crucial scientific research because they used Ctrl+F on the "scawy twans people words." Seriously, so much of what

this but also when they are confronted with this theyve just said the boobs are sick and twisted perversions spawned unnaturally through drug use. its like when that one girl was breastfeeding here baby and all the phobes had to come up with reasons why that was bad and evil and dangerous

the only thing phobes believe is is in their hatred towards the groups they hate that comes first and everything else is literally made up after tue fact and on the spot as needed to justify the bigotry

by taking hormones you are literally, acientifically, changing your biological sex. and that’s a fact the right doesn’t want to ever have to confront

ironically liberal allyship of the 2010s has likely played a part in this too. it meant well, but promoting “sex is seperate from gender” plays into rightwing transphobic framing, in that you are playing dress up but your biological sex is wholly seperate

I feel like the language is at least a partial issue, because until recently to me, “”biological male”” was the same as AMAB, but AMAB/AFAB is a much better description, and one that those freaks would never use

What happens when people sitting on the fence so long the end of the post has reached the bend in their intestines try and reason or argue down genocidal fascists to some reasonable middle ground--it just gives them further ammo to push their policy through in degrees

Horrific misinterpretation of "sex is separate from gender." Even if libs don't fully understood the anthropological/sociological underpinnings of the statement it doesn't erase the reality of it.

Yeah, but: I don't want to be doing graphs with T doses, E doses, and half-lives to work out what bathroom to use like, I changed my sex (several times, lol) but that's between me and my doctor - the rest of you don't need to know anything but my *gender*.

Buying into the idea that sex *matters* is buying into the transphobes' framing. (Maybe excluding sports - but hey, it's not like 20 years of scientific research about *that* mattered to the 'phobes either)

it’s mostly a relic of online transgender discussion these days, but in the 2010s the average liberal defense of trans people was to outline the difference of gender and sexual biology and it’s just not helpful

Is "transsexual" falling out of the lexicon also a part of this? It was often used as a slur, but with modern medicine it seems like it would be more accurate for some people (not every transgender person is on hormones, etc). I haven't seen much effort to reclaim it, so maybe I'm way off base.

i honestly think a lot of it was also just plain ignorance. i didn't learn a damn thing about how hrt changes your actual sex until i was on it (10 years after coming out as trans). i didn't think to push back against that rhetoric because i didn't know.

they don’t wanna hear it. they want sex and the associated roles to be innate and irrefutable so they can uphold patriarchal rule and reduce womanhood to the ability to reproduce. no amount of logic or shared knowledge will ever change their minds if it means they lose their grasp on power.

yes! been saying for years, a trans woman on HRT for a couple years has more in common with an infertile cis woman than EITHER woman has in common with a cis man. vice versa for trans men. it really cannot be understated how much HRT changes.

Wait hold on what do you mean hrt changes your biological sex ? Just trying to learn because i've never heard that before, do you mean it changes the biological trait that produces the reproductive cells ?

Sorry just got it, since sex is defined by bio. traits and hrt changes those traits (the visible ones which in a sociological context are the only ones that matter) which are part of sex, hrt effectively changes your biological sex i understand now i think

I do think it says a lot that it is a shock to most people (as it even was to me) that considering the procedure to rectify a heart attack is different for men and women, it is in fact more dangerous to use the male method on a trans woman than the female method our physiology DOES change.

I think people have just been bombarded with so much BS about “biological gender” that they just started adding it to their knowledge uncritically when it’s ACTUALLY biologically false Hormones play an enormous part in just about everything in body function and people just refuse to get it

A pretty easy one to point out is, if you look at my blood work thats checking a lot of typical body/organ functions, unsurprisingly all of it functions within typical female ranges.

yes, but it's not surprising that they don't give a shit about the science or how hormones actually change our bodies. that would require empathy and curiosity, and they only know disgust and outrage.

It's so frustrating they can just choose to ignore inconvenient facts. We can provide the facts for them all we want about sex change operations, hormones and intersex people, but as long as they control the conversation, they can just plug their ears and go lalala and we cant do anythint about it.

Right? Or, if "womanhood" is purely the ability to birth a child, if we can do functional uterus transplants into BiOlOgIcAl MaLeS, would the fight be over?

Transphobes all firmly believe in a "sexed soul." They think that if you are born "a male" you have some inherent spiritual "maleness" about you that can never be changed. Many of them won't admit it, because it's obviously make believe nonsense, but it's what drives most of this.

That's stright up from the Bible. All transphobe and reactionaries are taking their points directly from the Christian concept of original sin and need of a purity of soul. It's no surprising that the biggest attacks to trans people from feminism are coming from people with a background in theology

Christianity is a fucking blight on society. i wish to live long enough to see organized religion banned and practicers ostracized. hell id love it if Christianity itself was made illegal and we persecuted believers just like roman times!! the romans were onto something they were cookin
