just absolute fucking cowards everywhere you look in U.S. tech leadership

Oliver Darcy@oliverdarcy.bsky.social

“Everyone considers it fucking nuts.” Inside Apple, I'm told "not a soul" supports Donald Trump's Lake Ontario rebrand to "Lake America," but the company is also resigned to making such concessions to avoid the White House's rage. Details in @status.news: www.status.news/p/apple-maps...

It’s not just market differentiation. Apple has tens (hundreds?) of $billions of tariff exemptions given out by the corrupt dictator, and making him angry could lose them. It’s asking a lot for them to resist, and one could argue it’s against their fiduciary responsibility.

fuck that, it's fascism what's their fiduciary responsibility to the continued existence of functional democracy and actual working markets?

It is fascism, but the name of a lake, which will revert Day 1 of a Dem administration, is trivial in the face of everything else going on. It’s an unpopular, impotent flail that spotlights Trump’s weakness.

tech companies tried to pretend they were just adhering to automated GNIS data standards, but that appears to be incorrect they were just pre-emptively feckless because U.S. tech leadership has absolutely zero ethical or moral center of any kind

Google is a massively powerful corporation that has been at the forefront of the development of web-based information systems for almost 3 decades. The notion that it doesn’t have the technical expertise to disregard US GNIS mapping protocol is preposterous.

In a way, it’s taking the “engineers have no people skills” stereotype to the furthest possible extent: not only can we not communicate like normal people, we’ll push everyone possible (and their irrelevant opinions) out of the way in order to keep the money flowing like a crooked river.

Tech leaders aren’t cowards as much as fine with fascism as long as it benefits them. Cowards to me implies that they’re fearful - I don’t think they’re fearful - I think they’re greedy.

This made me remember HERE WeGo maps or however it's capitalized as alternatives to Google and Apple Maps. I used it back at the beginning of this legally questionable administration and it was nice. I checked it out now and... I see Gulf of Mexico renamed to "America". Yeah, fuck that.

MapQuest is showing both Lake Ontario and Gulf of Mexico. Just like they're by law legally named. None of this nationalistic (and poorly thought of since "America" applies to the entire new world) and incorrect BS.

Interesting, when I checked them out this morning I saw they still had Lake Ontario but I forgot to check the Gulf of Mexico. So I guess they don't have a principled stance, they're just very slow

I wouldn’t give any US Tech leader the benefit of doubt of whether they deep down DO support Trump They fucking paid for his campaign, his inauguration and god knows what else These are crocodile tears. They’re liars

Big Tech companies are all just concerned with profit, and harvesting data to control and sell to the masses. Tech CEOs are talking heads who spout more propaganda than the current admin, and the people of the world are paying for it.

That said I should probably stop being so negative online about this stuff, because I'm sure some internet sleuth will link all of this back to my job hunt and screw up my ability to find gainful employment.

this is the thing that kills me… the people and institutions that have the power to push back…just won’t. Only individuals with very little power have the courage to stand up to bullshit and while there is power in numbers, institutional power is always greater. It’s fucked.

They're acting like these chodes can even read a map. If you asked the president what states lake Ontario is in, he wouldnt be able to answer.

"we definitely think this is bad, we're just too cowardly to do anything about" is a much smaller distinction from "this is good actually" than Apple insiders would like us to believe. my wife remarked to me on this topic last night: "what's the point of fuck you money if not to say fuck you?"

That whole "MANLY CEO ALPHA CLAWED HIS WAY TO THE TOP THROUGH GRIT & GUTS" narrative that got mainstreamed back in the 1980s looks more & more like a lie now, doesn't it? From "Gordon Gekko" to "spineless lickspittles" in the space of 40 years...😂🤷‍♂️

I've seen the argument that Google & Apple both just pull data from GNIS and necessarily defer to GNIS, but that "deferral" is a _choice_, and I'm also not clear on the bounds of such deference For example, last year the Mexican gov't complained Google's changes extended beyond US jurisdiction

Is it correct that Google has been consistent? The Mexican gov't sued Google in Mexico City court over displaying "Gulf of America" to Mexican users, and complaining Google extended the changes past US maritime jurisdiction www.washingtonpost.com/world/2025/0...

So, let me get this right: It Trump continues on his hydronym rampage, he can, tomorrow, decide that the Potomac is called henceforth "The Cuntsplooge River" and Google and Apple with obediently amend? Got it.

Coward is a misnomer in my opinion. No company is afraid of trump. It's an experiment to see if oligarchs can really rule the world. I mean sure. We're all afraid of the spoiled child at the company picnic. But that child is just an example for those in power.

proving they can openly lie because we have no global system , no one in power from any country is going to call them out, even though it is within their realm of responsibility. And not doing so. Hinders the american people to police their government. *cough cough* oh my did I say sumthin?

Not sure cowards is the right word. It would imply tech leadership opposes the fascist project when they have instead consistently put themselves at the forefront of supporting it.
