James Lovelock is one of the greatest climate scientists that ever lived. We're about find out how on point his statements from over 18 years ago were.

Let's see what kind of possibly super El Niño we get this coming winter. "The global effects of El Niño have already started and arrive at different times in different places, with the effects typically peaking in the northern hemisphere winter (November to February)." www.piie.com/blogs/realti...

piie.comEl Niño could drag down the global economy by almost $700 billion or $3 trillion—and the choice is oursThe US National Weather Service has announced the arrival of an El Niño, the warm phase the Central Pacific warming and cooling cycle that affects weather across the globe. 20 yrs? I'll be dead despite my conservation practices. While others overfill garbage bins weekly, jet internationally, fill big RVs & gulping big engines and their progeny will live hot hot HOT & dry dry DRY in smoke filled summers. No looking ahead. B/c . . "I HAVE the MONEY." And "I want it NOW."

His climate work is significant if uneven, but I think his most lasting achievement is his invention of the electron capture detector (ECD) now in use on hundreds of thousands of gas chromatographs and related instruments. ECD allows minute amounts of atoms in a gas stream to be measured.

Yes, he was a great inventor too. That's also practically how his climate science work started, when NASA asked him for a device to assess whether their was like on mars.

We really can't go round blaming individuals just so we can pretend that we're somehow the 'good guys' in all this. Dems etc are just as bad.

No shade, but saying we're about to find out while we're currently choking on the smoke of North America burning and heat wave deaths in Europe break 10k is just about the perfect illustration of what a frog-boiling problem climate change messaging is.

Don't worry: Bluesky discovered climate change today, as it did yesterday and every day before that, and will at some point begin to plan to move toward making it top priority - although BP said "carbon footprint," so we're unable to engage in boycotts, particularly of fossil fuel companies.

Yup, but Lovelock was known for being an independent thinker who wasn't afraid to admit when he was wrong. By 2012, he publicly walked back his extreme timelines, acknowledging that climate models hadn't heated up as rapidly as he had feared in 2006–2008.

His quote to the Guardian that ‘anyone who tries to predict more than five to 10 years is a bit of an idiot, because so many things can change unexpectedly’ was his way of making fun of his own folly. Don’t get me wrong. We’re still fucked as fucked can be. Timeline is different.

It was a crisis 20 years ago. Now it's probably too late to prevent, but we can still hope to make it less severe. 20 year warnings have just been an excuse to debate and delay. We need ACTION and NOW. Instead we have MAGA Trumpian buffoons making it worse to get even richer. Wake TF up Americans.

What do you mean? We are in the act of finding out right now. Unprecedented wildfires, inland flooding, heat waves, and marine wildlife die-offs are being reported every day.

His work still resonates and if you are an environmentalist and follow weather and climate patterns you will notice that slowly gradually and consistently the needle is headed in the direction of warming

Exactly. Not to mention drought, insect die-off, wildlife die-off, lakes & rivers drying up. But my neighbors keep driving multiple SUVs per home, running AC March-Nov (in upper Midwest)using pesticides and watering their grass, and treating me like a weirdo & freak for my pollinator lawn.

The pollinator lawn is the funniest part. "So let me get this straight, I do basically nothing; I spend ~way~ less in time and maintenance and get more flowers and butterflies, and *I* am the weirdo?" Like, okay boss, you want to farm grass that's on you, but I have other stuff to do.

When I studied for my #BAHons #EnvironmentalStudies I calculated I had some decades until the #ClimateCrisis really hit home around 2030 ish. 🔥 I've done what I can, but the worst is yet to come. Unless we plant billions of trees, cover car parks in solar panels, STOP burning #FossilFuels, etc. 🌳

I'm 71, my husband is 82, we had no children--which always made me a little regretful, until now. God help you all, things will have to change, and soon. We drove subcompact cars, set thermostats responsibly, donated to sustainable efforts, voted for people who knew climate change was real. 😔 Sorry.

(Just to say, your "family" may well be extended & friends etc. but beyond that, although you might not know them, your assortment of genes & characteristics does live on in others. They will have similar reflexes. 👍)

My husband's brother and sister had no children of their own, so his mother and father's direct line died out with our generation, although she was one of 11 kids, and several of them had children and grands. My mom was one of 9 kids, 7 of them had children and grands. My husband and I have cousins.

A prescient chap. Though that article says: He saves his thunder for what he considers the emptiest false promise of all - renewable energy. ... Alarming he was mostly ignored, but not in this particular case.

That's kinda why I wish I had the means to live a life of sex drugs and rock and roll but not even I can do that and enjoy the pre-climate apocalypse world while I can.

Of course it is hitting the fan, that is why we are seeing attempts to depopulate. The elites are trying to reverse it by culling the herd…problem is we are the herd in their eyes.

Interviewers often remark upon the discrepancy between Lovelock's predictions of doom, and his good humour. "Well I'm cheerful!" he says, smiling. "I'm an optimist. It's going to happen." #Optimist #Smile

James Lovelock was the last serious climate scientist to talk about populations? Why is that? Why isn't the Club of Rome about Limits to Growth (LtG) anymore? What happened? “Population growth and rising incomes [eating animals] remain the strongest drivers of increases in CO2 emissions." - IPCC

Hugo@nonviolence.bsky.social

In the past, scientists & activists discussed overpopulation & overconsumption beyond fossil fuels. Limits to Growth #LtG Emerson, Einstein, MLK, Jacques Cousteau, Carl Sagan, David Attenborough, Edward O. Wilson, Jane Goodall, IPCC... Today? Silence regarding both: - Population - Consumption

Worldwatch was wonderful and somehow ahead of its time. Today's CarbonBriefs are a sad joke in comparison to the quality of thinking that Worldwatch had.

Well, him and all like ( his ‘king’ and ‘royal family’ etc) that believe in ‘overpopulation’ should lead by example and depart this plain of existence. Nothing is stopping them, never did. God riddance.

I use the hashtags #Collapse2028 #Extinction2100 Not because I like numbers and dates but as a homage to "1.5°C by 2100" and as a homage to the late James Lovelock. Not a single climate scenario (like SSP5-8.5) or model predicted how bad it would be today. Time to balance this? ⚖️

It's always been about GREED & MONEY. American priorities, have rarely been the most intelligent decisions. POWER, Convenience, and the Almighty dollar, has led the way, we treat our planet, OUR HOME.

I am not a climatologist, nor am I a paleontologist but however, though we have no flood basalts warming our oceans and atmosphere, humankind seems to be filling the void. Maybe it is just me but I see earmarks of the End Permian extinction (254 mya) being manifested even now as we speak.⛈️

Climate scientists were telling us back in the 1980s and nothing was done. I think the general belief was that either God or scientific development would provide some means to bail us out. God doesn’t exist and science is ignored. And here we are.

#AnInconvenientTruth2006 #Jor-ElGore We were all warned, but petrol corporations bribed our politicians #TheRepublicanParty and used social media #RushLimbaugh to make frightened dummies terrified enough to vote For their own extinction. We All knew 20 years ago. Republicans Own this.

I like how Lewis Thomas took that to an analogy of a living cell. The atmosphere being the cell membrane. " The Lives of a Cell" is a wonderful book. Also "From Eros to Gaia" by Freeman Dyson with some hope for extreme adaptation by humanity.

Been of the same opinion for some years, awaiting the Megadeath event. The search for scapegoats can then begin. Of course this may well be preceded much sooner by direct financial consequences that would spur investment to "protech (toungue firmly in cheek) shareholder value"

In the short term climate change looks like more extreme weather. Whether it's heat waves in Europe, or a thousand year flood for the second year in a row in Texas. The very rare events are now becoming yearly occurrences. In the long term, climate change means losing land to the ocean.

I've spent 16 years and over $500,000 of my own money developing technology that can reduce emissions from waste. Everyone says climate change is an emergency—until it's time to support a solution. That's the frustrating part.

I mean this is just the tip of the shit hitting the fan, it is really only the smallest thin sliver of shit so far, imagine when AMOC shuts down, in another 20 years, that is the part when you are getting big bratwurst sized clumps of shit. Enjoy your next twenty years of thin streaming shit.

Unfortunately, for the "Koch Brothers" and the Oligarchs, and the right-wing think tanks, and their lying for dollars enablers, it was not a cautionary tale, but a self-fulfilling prophecy. Gate up!

It’s hitting. Despite the coverups and disinformation coming from this kleptocracy. It is hitting already, and hitting hard. Everyone enabling this grift over the future of their descendants will be reviled for their greed and cowardice for generations.

We are basically at the beginning of the end. At the accelerated rate of heat domestic, heat waves, and ice melt... it won't be.long before our planet becomes unlivable for humans.

Yup. Anyone hear the term heat dome before the last several years? The consistent 100+ degree days we experience in the mid Atlantic now...the changes at the Poles etc. Smdh

The thing is the planet doesn't need us to survive...but we need it! Not exactly a quote from JL but that seems to be the sentiment I took away from some of his philosophy.

We're talking about massive food insecurity, heat wave deaths every year, dwindling water supplies. If you aren't old, this is coming for you. If you are old, it's coming for your children and their children.

Yet, the numbers of climate deniers is increasing, countries think it’s more urgent to build armies then fight climate change, Carney is seen as a world leader when he is ditching all climate policies to embrace “drill baby drill”. The greatest hability of man is denial.

Spot on prediction IMHO I recall talking about the insanity of humans unlocking sequestered carbon via fossil fuels way back in the 80's when I could first understand it - but when swamped by greed, growth agendas and ignorance - who listens!

Hear! Hear! I've been posting similar for a very long time... Check out the episode on Lovelock on the BBC'S Beautiful Minds series! bsky.app/profile/anza... bsky.app/profile/anza... bsky.app/profile/anza... bsky.app/profile/anza... bsky.app/profile/anza...

The Gaia Hypothesis of Professor James Lovelock & Lynn Margulis suggests otherwise The Gaia Hypothesis proposes that Earth & its biological systems function as a single, self-regulating complex system maintaining the conditions necessary for life The 🌏 will eventually recover when man is extinct

This is the problem. No, global warming won't "hit the fan". It has been getting sucked through the fan for the past 50 years. And it has been a slow and gradual process that suddenly gets noticed.

I seem to recall James Lovelock saying we had passed the point of no return at least a decade ago. “We may as well buy gas guzzling cars/automobiles and go out in a blaze of V6 4litre glory” I often suspect he is correct.

He was not a climate scientist. He is more properly thought of as a futurist who dabbled in climate as an inevitable connection to his woo-ish hypothesis He would piss off actual scientists by making too many extrapolations. He became useful to skeptics as this came home to roost in his dotage

And what does that mean - hit the fan? Weather becomes a factor for the human race that it has to overcome - cmon dumbasses that is the constant - look at pyramids surrounded by sand knowing it was rich enough for builders to create those monuments at one time. Climate changes and its human to live

Including YOU it seems! You’re more than happy to exacerbate climate change as it suits you, then you’re surprised when no one notices or cares?! YOU don’t even care enough, to walk down a different aisle at the store, yet expect and demand that everyone listen to your self-righteous rants?!? 🤣🤣

And trending up. The anti-science crowd loves to bring up outlier data, showing absolute science illiteracy. We will see cool years in the future, which will be hotter than cools years from history.

I am still hoping that this high school dropout is wrong from reading the wrong papers… as my province burns down, Europe is under an oppressive and deadly heat dome, and so many other in our faces indicators…

I agree global warming - global weirding! - is hitting the fan. But this doesn't say anything about how we people/orgs/communities prepare and respond. Who says we need to use the same systems we've always had? How about better systems to thrive within more challenging environment conditions?

We thought young people would pick up the mantle and save their 🌎. Instead they are competing for natural resource draining AI jobs while solar energy is deployed for saving 💵 instead of 🌎. Greed is competing with global warming to destroy the 🌏. 😳

Yeah. He said in 2004 ("Revenge of Gaia") that nuclear powergen was the only zero carbon power source that could provide sufficient baseload to save us from ourselves. Meanwhile the brain-dead Greens are still getting their information from old CND leaflets and Dr Strangelove...

I was telling grownups about global warming in the early '70s, as a 12-year-old. (And it was already in popular culture; in the 1973 movie "Soylent Green," it's always hot in NYC. Somebody splurging on A/C says, "Let's make it cold, like it used to be in winter!") We're collectively stupid.

one of the biggest causes of inertia,is 'what-aboutism arguments' Factually the USA is historically the great emitter. that doesn't mean no one else has contributed, nor is it an acqusation.. it's just a fact So Stop being defensive! Stop the whataboutism! less you prevent anything being done!

Have the courage to face the threat before us, accept your responsibility and stop trying to undermine the efforts of those seeking to mitigate the impact of what is to come. That is if you are a real person behind your cover name and not one of the vast number of FF funded accounts

China is building a new coal generated electricity plant every single week. But then, that's largely because the West has transferred most of its emissions to the the region.

Remember that the US (along with most of Europe) outsourced heavy industry to China in the 1980s onwards. We still buy the products, but don't own the emissions.

It's more than values -- oil structures bourgeois subjectivity. Example: most of my friends are wealthy liberals, very concerned about the environment -- and they all fly around the world like arsonists. They literally can't stop -- because they see themselves as "citizens of the world." 🔥 🌍🔥

America is full of greedy people who, whether they believe the science or not, only care about money. There are no consequences to these people. They don’t care about people or the environment or their own negative effects on both.They. Don’t. Care. That’s what we’re up against.

Within 2 years it's more likely bottlenecks in energy, fertilizer and other food production inputs will cause wide scale problems before climate change gets around to it. We live in interesting times.

He was among the majority of climate scientists who predicted this. My earth sciences textbook from the 1970s did. It also assumed mitigation measures would lessen impacts. Silly scientists, thinking humans would work to reduce emissions, not subsidize companies killing us.

Scientists warn we have less than 3 years at current emission rates before we exhaust the budget to prevent long-term warming past 1.5°C, & certain planetary tipping points could become locked in over the next decades. NASA: if greenhouse gas emissions stop today, global temp rises would flatten.

Yes, the warming is at the extreme end of predictions, and with what we have seen already, are seeing now and will see again in the near future, will be frightening. Where will we be in another 10 years? I am with you, societal collapse is highly likely in the next 10 - 15 years

WE KNEW THE WARNING DECADES AGO AND ALL THE SLOW EFFORETS TO HELP HAS BERN ROLLED BACK IN AN INSTANT WITH THE HIDIOUS HATEFUL ARROGANT POS OF TRUMPISM ALL FOR HIS & CRONIES TO PROFIT WHILE LIEING THERE IS NO SUCH THING, THAT NOW WILL AFFECT ALL OUR HEALTH WORLD WIDE AS OUR ENVIRONMENT DIES 😡

I heard him speak before this was so talked about. His main point then was that the Earth should be warmer than is if you run the calcs with what we know, so something was giving us a free ride - and if we don't know it was we don't know when it would collapse.

yeah...we are supposed to be ice free by now, have acid rain, lost the ozone layer, I forget the other predictions... but who knows.. .maybe it is delayed or something. I just know that we're in the middle of the Geological Warm Period and it isn't due to change for a long time yet

There's a difference between what the media likes to report - the outlier cases because disaster makes headlines and headlines sells papers/clicks - and what the scientists ACTUALLY showed. Climate Scientists showed a RANGE of possible outcomes, from the "do nothing" > 4C > floods to "net zero".
