NEWS: Janet Mills has VETOED a first-in-the-nation bill that would have paused large data center projects, blocking Maine from becoming the first state to enact a statewide moratorium on AI infrastructure.

Well, there are more during construction. Unions asked for the veto, too. This is already an industrial site. I don’t know if I’d support it, but it isn’t so clear cut.

Economist here: recent results of similar projects across the US have shown that claims of construction job creation made by developers of these data centres are not only very often exaggerated (if not fabricated), but rural data centres actually create limited longterm jobs for local workers.

Particularly as the people rural datacenters need to hire are typically not already in the area since there isn't demand for those skills there. They'll be high paid and typically more cosmopolitan and often will try to live closer to the nearest cities since that's where the comforts they want are

Even beyond the construction and tech job creation claims, the operators of the data centres are incentivised—both by financial pressures and the nature of AI adoption and automation—to actually reduce human labor as quickly as possible after construction to achieve operating sustainability.

And the tax subsidies that municipalities often award to developers and operators to attract these data centre projects often out-way the longterm economic benefits to the locality or region, even before factoring in tax avoidance strategies very often employed by the operators after completion.

You obviously haven't followed Mills' veto history over her career as governor. She has consistently made pro-corporate vetoes to crush both labor and the environment.

1/25 U.S. intelligence secretly shifted to private companies after CIA drug scandals. The PayPal-hacker case shows this pattern — escalating crime, gov silence, producing CIA-backed Palantir. Psychology research confirms such protected, escalating networks are the most dangerous criminal category.

So while everyone on Bluesky screams about Platner possibly pulling a Fetterman, Mills is like, hold my beer. Guessing she’s about to show up to the statehouse in a hoody. 🙃

Maybe use your large account to educate people instead of stir up lies. This project was approved BEFORE the moratorium. The community is desperate for it & she asked the legislature for an exemption for it. This project was to use the existing infrastructure of a closed paper mill. Much less

water usage than the mill & no wastewater into local rivers. It meant millions of dollars & both permanent & temporary jobs. We need more leaders like Mills, instead of bullshit on social media. She fought for her constituents & kept her word.

Because she is a shill for Chuck Schumer! Chuck Schumer loves those big donations from Google, Meta, Palantir, and Elon Musk.

Hope they have a bunch of extra drinking water because these things gobble tons of cooling water, or so I've read. Not sure why they can't cool and recycle the water so no new/less is used.

I think there is one in process? Article I, Section 10, Clause 1 of the U.S. Constitution (the Contract Clause) explicitly states: "No State shall... pass any... Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts".

Didn’t the party “establishment” tell candidates not to antagonize Big AI and its $300 million PAC? This is what that looks like I feel bad for the town of Jay but these things don’t really create that many new jobs

You would expect someone like David "Call Me Dave" McCormick to be all in on data centers (corporations v. people), but this from Mills is almost shocking. I keep reading about local data center projects in the Inquirer and the loud public backlash. Some aren't hearing it, I guess.

Correct. They take up a lot of square footage and require a lot of infrastructure, but you could operate 100k sq/ft 24/7 with 12-15 people. That's not to say that a DC isn't a net positive economically, but they aren't the windfall that a factory employing hundreds or thousands would be.

That was sarcasm, obviously. Northern rural Maine will never vote for a Democrat. They just make a lot of noise and Democratic politicians jump to please them at the expense of the people who actually vote for the Democrats.

You alt-leftists sure do hate that us Democrats try to help our working class Americans. What segment of the population would you all try to help out if you ever are able to win an election?

Oh good grief. This project was approved BEFORE the moratorium. She asked the legislature to put an exemption in for it. The community is desperate for jobs. The plan was to use existing infrastructure & much less water useage than the existing paper mill that closed down. It also had no waste water

into the local river. It meant millions of dollars and both permanent & temporary jobs. And did the opposite of political pandering & stood by her constituents & her word. Shame on all the bullshit attacks that don’t even bother to learn facts.

If she really had the interest of the people of Jay she would have found a company the would hire more than 25 people that AI centers employ. A company that will help the Maine economy or the US with lots of opportunity for employment. Not one that sucks the well dry and raises their electric bills.

There are no companies that want to come here. In this case, there is existing infrastructure that will be utilized, the work has already begun, and the town is about to vote on whether or not to approve it. Shouldn't they be allowed to decide their fate?
