Legos, never changed or updated their shapes, everything from day one still works with stuff in 2024. So nice. Sound familiar? Yeah, the web is like that too.

People used to build websites, now they use platforms to do it The web was once about design and aesthetics, uniqueness and carving out a space where you fit in. Now, it's all been monetized to a point where the only thing generated now is content. Its very, very different than in the 90s.

I wish that went the other way, too, with stuff in 2024 working under older browsers. It seems like I have a narrow window for enjoying a stable browser version, once found, before websites stop working for it. When will core web standards calm down and stop churning? Will they ever?

And much like real Lego some of the old pieces are a bit loose these days but it all still works together and some of the new pieces are really dang cool! Do I have too much Lego in my house? I say no. Others might disagree.

Alright you hooligans can bring up flash & blink all y’all want, but our man out here has a point. HTML is one of the most stable formats we’ll see in our lifetimes. Just like Legos. (The s is silent.)

The web has changed quite a lot though. From its languages, connectivity, over browser engines to much more centralization on how content is being delivered. The internet is basically ruled by big content providers nowadays.

It can be argued that Flash wasn’t truly part of “the web” since it relied on proprietary technology and plugins, unlike HTML/CSS/JS which are open standards.
