Um. We literally have the ability to SEE germs and infer that they cause disease. That tool is called a microscope! I’m no scientist, but even I know that!! 🙄. Also animal experiments. Ffs, this guy doesn’t have two brain cells to rub together! 🤡

The current administration is doing everything to kill us – taking insurance away from the needy, disregarding science and accepted medical practices, appointing conspiracy theorists with no medical/science background to head agencies that they shouldn’t be allowed within 10 feet of...

Outdated? Try completely medieval. Next we'll be back to bloodletting for every illness too and never mind about washing hands and sanitizing instruments. I would bet Kennedy agrees with Hegseth and germs don't exist, it's why Hegseth on FOX said he doesn't wash his hands after using the toilet.

"outdated" miasma theory? You mean "disproven". You make it sound like it's a theory from the good old dates, with some type of nostalgic redeeming value. That's far to benign a description for a very dangerous and incorrect theory.

To close the article with “there’s truth in both positions” is a disservice to the reader. Respecting one (environmental factors) without the other (microbes) is irresponsible…and in rfkjr’s position, I dare say, criminal!

Just because you can explain his stupidity doesn't make him any less stupid. It also doesn't change the fact that his decision making will almost certainly lead to unnecessary deaths & illnesses. Great job appeasing Trump, GOP!

As someone who believes in germ theory, miasma theory isn't as crazy as you'd think; recall at the beginning of the pandemic Fauci wouldn't recommend people wear masks, as if germ-laden air had no effect on whether one contracted disease. We couldn't advocate schools teach outside for some reason.

NO!! He recommended not using masks to the public because there were not even a fraction of enough for health care workers. Then Pres Trump set up contests between states to suck off his ego to get PPE. My Governor, Polis from CO, sent a private plane to steal some from afar.

'Outdated'? What are we talking about, listening to music on cassette?? Miasma theory has been thoroughly discredited. 'Miasmas' do not exist. You wouldn't learn diagnostics and treatment plans for 'miasmas' in medical school.

This is a plague doctor. They believed in the miasma theory. The mask's long beak would protect them from the bad air. This is what RFK Jr. Believes we should follow. Black plague killed anywhere from 5-40% of the world population in 5 years. That would be 400 million - 3.2 billion deaths today.

Why are you looking for explanations to his actions? Is it going to help enter into a dialogue with him? Change his mind? Help plot a course of action? We are dealing with people who think what they believe is more important than facts. Logic and reason will have zero impact.

"But some other observers argue that Kennedy's ideas about the miasma and germ theories aren't necessarily mutually exclusive." I mean, yeah, we know that cancer, for example, can be caused by environmental factors. But will he fight to make air and water cleaner, or will he just fight to ban 5g?

What's the problem? We all know bad smells cause disease. I thought RFK was against masks, and as Trump would say, this is the biggest mask you've ever seen. Could it be that he is a degenerate moron? Worth mentioning that the masks *didn't* work back then, even filled with pleasant smelling stuff

In short, he's an ignorant asshole who believes something about as valid as the Four Humors. Shame on you, NPR, for not saying flat-out that the Miasma Theory is garbage that was debunked almost 200 years ago.

@npr.org once again you show far right bias, using words like "outdated" instead of something more accurate, like "myth based" or "belief based" or even "anti-science". Knees bent to the crown, no one who wishes objective news should donate to NPR any more.

NPR, you have to do better. Miasma theory has been debunked for well over a century. It stopped being a working theory when MICROSCOPES were invented. There are no two sides to this. Giving any legitimacy to RFK Jr and his nonsense comes at a expense of public health.

Since Bobby Brainworm believes in the miasma theory of disease, maybe he could be invited to judge a chili and baked bean cook-off held indoors at a poorly ventilated venue. It might be torture for him, but then again he likes to prove his virility by swimming in sewage.

Why conclude this article with the notion that both sides may have a point from a sports analyst? We know too much about the immune system - a system notorious for its fucked logic - to speculate that vaccines are not the most effective way at strengthening the immune system against a specific bug.

Because there is a valid point on each side. Continue modern medical practices and research while also strengthening immune systems through healthy habits. Like the quote said. "Why can we not acknowledge that there is truth in both positions?'"

I've decided to give "miasma" a try because there are some diseases that are environmental, such as fine particulates in the air. Air pollution of all sorts might be considered "miasma." Obviously, germ theory has been proven, but there are environmental issues germ theory doesn't account for.
