Setting aside the specifics of this recent case, and focusing on the broader issues implicated: If none of the three branches of government, at state or federal level, show a willingness to pursue police reform and accountability, and if cops, for all sorts of reasons, won't self-police . . .

Who does that leave to curb police excesses? We have anodyne legalese to describe these excesses: civil asset forfeiture, justifiable homicide b/c perceived threat, qualified immunity. But we all know banditry, murder, and lawlessness when we see it. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

That’s the hegemony at work, the underlying common sense of society where executions by the state and its enforcers is normal but any response is not

"Gov. Mike DeWine of Ohio said in a statement on Friday that he had been briefed on the investigation, adding that he was “sickened by what appears to be an intentional act of violence.” Which one, Mike? Be more specific..

A lot of people just reading a headline here. Do a little more reading. It took me less than 5 minutes to find out that 4 guys were found in a stolen car. They ran and the guy with the gun ended up shot. I don't want to see anyone killed but it doesn't sound like they were good dudes...

1) We (America) have been psychologically abused for decades. It has also manifested in some ways as self harm. When they hate the way you shine they want to tear you down. In a way, a light is being shown on the shadows and we have our diagnosis. We are sick. We need our allies.

Trust me, we are aware. Some of us have been saying this for a loooooong time. We were ridiculed and mocked. “I told you so” just doesn’t cover how people like me are feeling.

More violence, especially against those perceived to abuse their power, will continue growing. What will prevent more, or reduce the amount, is if we #untie for sustainable parity of all life. Anything less is uncivilized, and enables the continued child abuse. #HumanReform #GlobalReform

Well, ok 1. it's not a movie, shooting someone in the leg isn't as easy as shooting them in the body, it's why you dont get a bunch of headshots either. 2. that's still an escalation, cops need proper deescalation training and to be held to higher standards.

wow. just got to the bottom (so far) of the thread. ... ... quite a heated exchange after your suggestion. I guess 'maybe the police should stop shooting ppl' is pretty controversial.

Rodney Hinton Sr ran over a traffic cop who had nothing to do with anything. Rodney Hinton Jr literally stole a car. You people are fucking sick in the head. What happened to Alton Sterling, Philando Castile, Eric Gardner, and so many others was horrible. But these Hinton ppl are scum of the earth.

1. Police lie about their victim's having guns. It makes it easier to get away with murder. 2. Cops aren't supposed to murder fleeing perps. I just hope the guy got the guy who murdered his kid.

1. Conspiracy theorist. The family witnessed the son armed. 2. Cops can and will, and are allowed, to shoot you if you're carrying a gun and fleeing. It's not just about them, but also the public. So you saying "cops arn't allowed to shoot fleeing perps" is a strawman based from your conspiracy.

Oh allow me to change my wording. Cops can shoot fleeing suspects just like they can shoot anyone for any reason in this country and get away with it. Still makes them a murderer though. Legality doesn't change reality.

You point #2 is correct only if officers have reasonable suspicious they’ll use the firearm. Can’t just shoot someone running from you because he has a holstered sidearm on him. As for your last point. Tennesse v Gardner. Look it up and read it.

Well apparently the Father seemed to not think it was justified after watching the footage and took it out on what appears to be a random law enforcement officer. So at this point what does it really matter. Where is the justice here?

You can kill a person in self defence if you believe your life is in danger lol. Like this criminal who pulled a gun out. "Oh gee, I guess I'll let him shoot at me first. I'm not allowed to decide if my life is in danger when a guy pulls a gun out and I'm trying to arrest him." Haha, you're funny

Yeah he did. Kinda obvious you deserve to die when you steal a car and then put other people lives at risk. Bang bang, he dead, and hopefully the father will be too. Deserves it No mercy for this kind of behavior. Murdering people because your son put people's lives in danger. Too bad.

It's getting bad when people start to think vengence is ok! But we do have a president that thinks it's the proper thing to do and has ordered ice to break the law!! Now the police are in the middle. I suggest that law enforcement stay back and let the air support wear them out, when possible.

I'm sorry for the father, I'm sorry for the boy whose life was ended too soon, I'm sorry for the officer whose family will miss him. At the same time, maybe this will catch the attention of some police and they'll think twice before being so f'ing trigger happy.

Sure! Let me just tap into my billionaire bank account. FOH- if moving was financially feasible I’d have left this country a long time ago. No real history here.

Not that I'm aware of. It's more that he is this gentle grandpa who sounds pleasant and soft. And then an hour later you suddenly think what the fucking fuck did that fucking asshole say!?

As he had viewed the footage, I would assume the driver decided that the shooting of his son was also an intentional act. As sad as this is, it is also an indictment of the US legal system. If police are not held accountable for their actions, the public will take matters into their own hands.

When I was a teacher, I had to be certified in any province in which I wanted to teach. If I lost my cert in one province, it would impact the others - I could lose those or be on probation. It amazes me that police are not held to the same standard. They should be licensed to be officers!

Also all these unmarked ICE raids, where none of the agents are identified and people get abducted and sent to a concentration camp in El Salvador. Lethal escalation will result in far, far more cops being killed, and this will mean the cops will escalate, and so on and on until literal civil war

How many times do we have to get burned by an "unjustified shooting" turning out to be clearly justified. Some people are just too full of themselves to see right from wrong. Until we see the video ourselves we aint gonna know one way or the other.

It would help if literally any killings by cops were admitted to be unjustified and punished. There's people out there still arguing the liking of George Floyd was justified.

This is just one example of what Americans are being driven to by the corruption in this country. It's only going to get worse. How much more can and will we take?

It worse police need to stop being the aggressor people care and respect the police but there are a few to many police that think they are a force to be feared and have no remorse hurting people they need to deescalate situation not gas light them

Did The NY Times use any ink to report on the killing of the 18-year-old? Was the reporting this in-depth? The only interesting dynamic here is the revenge angle, why waste ink about how a dead person was well-liked? Garbage journalism.

It doesn’t sound like it was the same cop - it is two separate incidents, the second being a mental health issue from extreme grief I don’t know what I’d do if I watched a video of cops chasing down my son and killing him

Just found out the young man allegedly pointed a gun at police when they tried to arrest him after a vehicle theft incident. Gotta say, pointing a gun at police in the US, is gonna get you shot I'm afraid. Don't know if it's true, but they say it's all on video.

The whole point of criminal trials is to provide an process so people don’t try to extract revenge — as that is extremely destructive for all society. The problem with qualified immunity is it doesn’t allow that process, so this is the result.

He may not have invented them, but he's sure made them worse. Remember, during his first campaign, how he literally said cops should smack suspects' heads on the car doorframe when arresting them? And how cops were crying in the streets when Biden won?

The point is that if you pin it all on trump then you’ll just pretend it’s gone when he leaves. Like most liberals did when Biden was elected and trump left, so many democrats ran on tough on crime policies in 2022.

This flows from the cops and white supremacy, not from trump. I want to agree with you but I saw how liberals turned to straight up tough on crime policies in 2021 after trump left and I’m not repeating that crap.

Yes, you are right on that. Evidently the 4 were parked sitting in a stolen car. They ran when cops got there. Body Cam ( below) isn’t clear if he had a gun (I thought it was a Coke can) and if he did you would think the PD would display it. local12.com/news/local/c...
