in Finland where the automated tickets are scaled to your income--one rich guy got dinged for 121,000 euros--they also do not like getting traffic citations in the mail, SO THEY DO NOT SPEED

"I view the speed limit as a guideline" explains everything. We are dealing with entitled piece of shit here. He is the reason we need speed cameras in the first place.

Yeah, but it's less the fine size than the social effect. Here a speeding ticket you might joke about with your mates. But in the Nordics its more like shoplifting; an unacceptable crime not a joke.

Here even DUI is an edgy administrative offence, not too serious; not a real crime. There - your friends and colleagues would disassociate from you.

“i view speed limit as a guideline” - at least in maryland the cameras only nail you if you go 12+ over. you aren’t getting a ticket for going 32 in a 30.

Yeah they did answer the other person's question and the reality is they just don't like traffic laws (speed limits at least) and dont want them enforced. Once you know that you can basically ignore everything else theyre saying as motivated reasoning based on that

You don’t need a camera. License plates just need a chip in them that can be tagged at intersections. The chip need only contain the license number. You can use existing wires to check for cars without license plates, too. Both infrastructure approaches are cheaper than cameras.

Policing in generally scattershot on purpose. Officers enforce laws disproportionately against select communities because the oppression is the point, not the value of the law. If people are allowed to speed and have invalid plates, it is probably because of who they are.

I actually think it’s mostly a jurisdictional thing, and just the police department here doesn’t see it as a priority. Based on the cars I see doing it, I doubt it’s primarily a function of their wealth and influence.

every speed camera has a big ass sign before and next to it, and they're punched into Google maps. they do not want you paying that ticket, they want you driving in a safe and sensible manner

In Ontario, our conservative Premier ripped out all the speed cameras that he approved and then people went right back to speeding. Today's conservatism is 100% about using the law to punish outsiders and reward insiders.

yep. and in an American context it's just irritable low-trust "damn gubmint" libertarianism with a micron-thin coat of leftist sloganeering

The Recurring Speed Camera Discourse is a bit exasperating really because, look, we all know what's actually happening is people just want to be able to commit the pertinent crimes and don't like being punished for it, but people come up with obvious post-hoc pseudo-woke rationalisations for this.

I do think at least some of it comes from people inherently realizing that A) there are a ton of bullshit speedtraps and B) american roads are built to actively encourage speeding, but IMO thats why you fix A and B and not go against basic ticketing cameras

In the US, is Google Maps always quickly updated to changes in speed limits? It isn't in the UK. I think Waze is better, but I wouldn't rely on either. None of this contradicts your correct main point obvs.

the thing I saw in Finland I haven't seen anywhere else, including the US, was every speed camera clearly marked. not sure if they were getting that from the government though

In the UK they are all painted bright yellow (the point I think being they are supposed to disincentivise speeding on the spot rather than in retrospect) but don't actually say SPEED CAMERA on them.

And in the UK, as well as a sign before them, the cameras have to be painted yellow for high visibility. I'm struggling to see why a driver would rather deal with a cop than a notice in the mail.

I really think this is a big part of people’s resistance, what they imagine is randomly placed hidden cameras that will send you a $200 ticket for going 36 in a 35 while they’re being passed rather than what actually exists

The motivation for the people who agree to install the cameras is to enforce safe driving. The motivation for the people who run the cameras is to ticket lots and lots of people. It is a very American story where we introduce the profit motive into a public trust issue and f-ck everything up.

Road tax (whatever you call it - annual fee for licensing your care) is already scaled by CO2 emissions per mile here in the UK. We won't demand a royalty if you copy that one.

The Finnish speeding ticket sliding scale is my go to when explaining that deterrents have to hurt to be effective. A $100 ticket looks real different at different incomes. Also, it’s not a cash grab if people actually change behaviour (which they do). p.s. applies to other laws (e.g. env. fines)

I think a slightly overlooked aspect is the framing of "lead foot" as some kind of physical or mental condition and not a choice a person makes to operate heavy machinery in a dangerous manner.

It’s all one big round of “but speeding isn’t that bad - I speed all the time!” Believe me I get that a lot of speeding is due to bad road design, but also you don’t get to do something illegal as a treat if that thing regularly causes injury and death.

I just visited Helsinki for a week. I come from Germany, and it feels so much better to use a Zebra crossing there. Cars are driving only 30 kilometers/hour and they are very cautiously near them.
