Agreed! So many cool sets but definitely not priced to be accessible for most people. If they lowered them they could sell so many more sets! I’d probably spend way more on Lego overall if the individual sets cost less. But with how they are now, I’ll buy one every few years

What happened to Lego blocks man. Building castles, police cars , spaceships and castle ships, and police castles and flowers on space horses Wasn’t the point of Lego the infinite imagination possible, these things are one shot and done .

Don't judge other people's hobbies that don't affect you. You likely have some hobby that others consider pointless. (I have not bought or played with Legos in probably 50 years.)

yeah. dont buy lego at this scale anymore. there smaller sets are still fine but anything over a 100 dollars is a waste of money. theyre bad by any metric you pick for how to value lego.

Lego has been hovering around a dime per piece for like a decade-plus now. These sets aren't to my taste, but they're physically big sets for adults and are priced in line with that market. 🤷🏻‍♂️

(And if you buy these and don't open them, you're likely going to be able to sell them at a significant premium in 12-18 months.)

Charizard alone on the set has probably skyrocketted the re-sale price of that set from scalpers Better like all starters if you're buying it, I wish I could just have the Blastoise 🥲

It is honestly terrible how much they are charging for this stuff now. I remember when Lego was extremely reasonably priced back when it was a Kids toy. Since adults have taken an interest for collection reasons the prices have just ballooned.

There are Lego enthusiast pages on social media, but recently they've pivoted very much to US people posting enormous hauls with 20+ boxes of each, scalping I guess. Same nonsense with Hot wheels cars. Kinda weird how every hobby must be monitised in the US. Same with real cars. Ruins it.

Quite comical with Hot wheels cars. I saw this Cone car in one of the facebook group sold for 5-10x of MSRP. The fucker probably bought up the whole inventory but at least the shop i visit still has this one in the price reduced hot wheels bin.

Once again, for those in the back, LEGO HAS *ALWAYS* BEEN EXPENSIVE. On a price per brick, or price per unit weight, basis, these are pretty consistent with anything else in the licensed product range. You can *still* buy a Lego set for $10 or less. Just not one of these.

Perhaps. I dont follow exactly what is available in detail. However, when I scan the shelves in my local stores for anything I'd consider a bargain, there are *loads* of affordable (arbitrary definition <AU$100) sets suitable for kids in the Technic, City, Friends, Ninjago etc. ranges.

Gods above, that's absurd! I can go with an offbrand and pay like not even 1/3rd that for similar stuff, AND IT HAS ARTICULATION. (Limited, but.) and it's probably 10x easier to build. Less Detailed, yea, but easier on the wallet and hands.

It hardly looks like Lego anymore. It's no longer building with the parts we have, but every new product has it;s own unique pieces. Totally streamlined. I loved the old way of lego much more.

Like they could’ve made all three of the starters separate sets, cuz I’m sure there’s someone who’s gonna skip out on Charizard, but still want Blastoise. I also feel like they should’ve made SOME playscale models because Pokemon is really popular with kids

I can't even get into the tabletop due to the fact I can't afford it and I don't have any friends to play it with. So it's vidya games and audio books for me. Then again I think Warhammer has always been an expensive hobby

idk if you like lego so much but can't afford the crazy shit there are some slightly less expensive models I think that and ofc Lego Star Wars The Complete Saga is peak

Seriously. The Star Trek TNG set is less than that starters set! I love Lego, but these are a definite pass. We’ll stick with the Animal Crossing sets. It would have been really cool if they did small sets featuring gym leaders with their Pokémon. A Cerulean City Gym set would be really cool.

I'd be tempted by the gym badges, but given the rest of these prices, I could probably buy authentic-looking metal replicas at a local con for like 1/4 of the price.

They have, check out Bluebricks too, they too sell merchandise items like the car from Back to rhe Future but are way more affordable. Also great own build made by them. No pokemon tho.

I collect lego, as an adult, but I do not understand the desire to have a blocky, oddly shapped statue of cool looking things. I'd much rather have a set that is like a cool building, or an actually good Star Wars set that is not the millennium falcon.

Yeah, I have the money but I just outright refuse. Insane. But fun fact, you can get many Nintendo-based "lego" sets on Ali Express and Temu. The most expensive is like $50 but they average in the 20-30 range. No, they're not LEGO, but they get the scratch itched.

This is an investment, not a child's game anymore. If I buy them both and keep them sealed in their original boxes for 10 years—hidden from light, heat, mold, or freezing temperatures—what will their value be then? That is what I keep asking myself.

idk why so many people still give their money to a company, which rise their prices while reducing bricks at the same time to satisfy their shareholders every year... Usually you get better and cheaper sets from BlueBrixx, COBI, CADA, Mega (e.g. Pokemon) and Mould King!

The problem is the price per piece model. We should judge it on price per ounce or gram. A giant set could be 4,000 unique pieces with unique color shades. A medium set could be 8,000 mass produced regular color pieces with instructions on how to make a licensed character.

Nah for me the problem is the business model of creating massively expensive collectors pieces in the first place. The ratio is fine, but I don't especially care about that.

The ratio really isn't fine. There will always be expensive collector pieces but LEGO are just plastic bricks. I get licensing fees but there are tiny Spider-Man sets that are three minifigs and a small police car for $50. They have to be losing sales over pricing by now.

I went to a Toy Fair at my local recreation centre, just popped in when my daughter was having her swim class. I expected stalls of toys new and vintage - yep! What I didn’t expect was the amount of middle aged men, inspecting action men and Barbies, Tin Can Alley, subbuteo & many more.Very serious!

It’s the one factor that destroyed 00’s-10’s pop culture— Fan Gentrification: Horror Comic books Video games TV Cartoons Star Wars Harry Potter Anything else that attracts aging gatekeeper “connoisseur” fans who want to refine their childhood fandoms by refusing to appeal to new mainstream fans.

My family loves Lego. I got the Lego game boy ($60) for Christmas and my kids got a cute Bluey set ($30). I think for the high quality those are fair prices. We also found a solution to the $100+ super big/expensive sets. We just don’t buy them and then it doesn’t really hurt us if others do. 🤷‍♂️

Have heard a lot of good about BrickIt (build with what you have) and Lego Builder (get manuals) apps and ordering any missing pieces individually

I was looking for new hobbies and crafts to do at work during downtime, looked at the prices of Lego kits, and got a detailed 3D wooden puzzle kit for like $20 on sale. Getting into marble runs now; pricier but still much cheaper than Lego.

once the starter set drops and we have a piece count, I wanna know if it would be cheaper to buy the (non-specialized) bricks separately instead of buying the set because fucking INSANE price

They could have done it so that one Squirtle set builds Squirtle, two builds Wartortle, and three builds Blastoise, and allow us to evolve our Lego Pokemon... But maybe that was too complicated, I don't know

Yeah but it’s also nothing new. Lego Death Star - $1000. - $.11 per piece. Lego Millennium Falcon - $850 - $.11 per piece Lord of the rings eye of sauron thing - $460- $.08 per piece Jack Sparow pirate ship - $380 - $.13 per piece They’ve been doing it long enough to know their market

I don't like megabloks alas. I've had some from other lines, but they never hit the same way for me. I'm Lego or nothing, and in this case it's team nothing. (Admittedly the Eevee looks pretty solid and well priced for what it is though ngl)

I'm on a Lumibricks kick lately, I gotta recommend it. Same quality, amazing builds, cheaper, light-up too. Their figures suck at the moment but supposedly they're working on a redesign. I know you say Lego or nothing, but these are super solid minifig scale sets.

I'd suggest adults get significantly cheaper alt brick sets. Like Mould King. They're just as good. Just don't have the Lego branded bricks. Fun to build.

I mean, said pieces of plastic are arguably the most reusable pieces of plasic ever. Sure that doesnt stop it from ending up in landfills by default, but that just means people should donate their old sets/bricks more.

You gotta give them credit for design. They make some super cool shit. It is expensive. It would be interesting to know how they treat employees and source their products. They have some of the best and most extensive users manuals out there.

Across the board, Lego sets cost about $.10-$.13 per brick. For that you will get a toy that will outlive you and is compatible with the same building system going back 75 years. It is made to higher tolerances and a higher degree of quality than ANY brick competitor. How is that a con?

And as far as the price goes, any sets that have a lot of large, unique molds, like animals or entire chunks of a ships hole as one mould and things tend to cost more.

I’m still not seeing a con. They show you a product and give you a price and you either pay for it or you don’t. That’s not a con. I really don’t get your point.

More egregiously: it's X pieces that aren't reconfigurable however I like but made with a shape in mind. The beauty of Lego (similar to Minecraft) was in the ability to build a lot of things with only basic bricks if you could live with the blockiness!

Depends on why you buy it. I don’t want to play with my LEGO, I put them together and lock them in cases. It’s decoration to me, not a toy. And if you want to play around, there are special sets for that, which are way cheaper since you don’t have to pay the licencing fee for any IP 🤷‍♂️

My opinion of all these designer-series kits summed up perfectly. Using our imagination was the whole point. Giving us pieces to make a precision replica of an orchid utterly defeats the purpose.

The con with these isn't price per piece (which has remained roughly stable for over a decade), but rather the economy of scale trick. They've phased out most 'small scope' kits for IO brands, in hopes that the people who will be happy with just the cheapest product of the line will pay 2-3 times

What they would normally do for a 'cheap end impulse buy'; and then they lock the actually cheap low guilt sets (like the 300 piece badge set and 200 piece pokemon center) being being bonuses for a 600 dollar purchase and 250 in online purchases. All in the name of profit seeking without
