As a paratrooper myself, I think you've nailed it. Maybe there's places where an airborne incursion *could* be staged, but none where it would be tactically beneficial. Certainly not without increasing the likely loss of life of the paratroopers. It's just aholes playing w GI Joes.

Dropped into combat zones in both world wars? No. It served in WW1 (in 1918), but no American units did combat drops in WW1.

The 82d Airborne Division did not drop in two world wars, only in WW2. The division did serve in WW1 as a straight infantry division. They also didn't drop in either Vietnam or Afghanistan, although they served in both wars.
