Canada Post is a Crown Corporation. It was never intended to make a profit, it provides a SERVICE to Canadians. Canada Post would help themselves out if they divested themselves of Purolator and dropped package rates by at least 25%. Every time they up stamp prices they lose 1 million customers.

Should we also stop funding fire departments then? Why pay for anything if it costs us money? What about public roads? How much money do roads actively produce? Or does indirect economic impact through public investment in infrastructure only count for miles-long tarmac slabs?

People don’t seem to understand the difference between a public service vs a crown corporation. CP used to be quite profitable 20y ago, but mail volume has declined yet union leaders think CP should still operate exactly the same. Pretending things haven’t changed is a sure way to become extinct.

Propaganda. Post should be a public service. WE WANT it to be a public service. It doesn't need to be a business and run for profit. It's meant to run for us. This spin is meant to prime Canadians for the plug being pulled. Pushing our post into the hands of private, for-profit, corporations.

CUPW steward here. The "losses": - $400+ million dollar Albert Jackson package facility, currently running at %20 thanks to parcels being funneled to Purolator during our negotiations. - Tens of millions in lost pay equity lawsuit grievances from CPC screwing with workers' pay

- Hundreds of custom EV delivery vehicles, still sitting unused and rotting for over 6 years while the corporation says we'll have to share trucks because they're running out. - $1 billion bailout that coincided with Canada Post using that money to buy Purolator an international logistics firm

- CEO, executive, and upper management bonuses continuing throughout all of the years of supposed "losses" - The implementation of an "SSD" system that increases the need for overtime while delaying mail to Canadians by 1-5 days minimum during an affordability crisis

Fucking incompetent journalism. Services don't lose money. Canada Post did not lose any money because services shouldn't be expected to make money.

Canada Post Corporation Act: "the need to conduct its operations on a self-sustaining financial basis while providing a standard of service that will meet the needs of the people of Canada." To everyone saying, 'but it's a service'. Yup, an unwieldly, maladapted service with horrible RoI. Adapt.

Counterpoint: requiring that was a bad thing to do, because it fundamentally misunderstands the role of CP and its benefits to society, and we should undo it

The CPC as an end-of-route delivery mechanism for remote communities is a solid argument for a non-for-profit component, but the current manifestation is wildly wasteful and uncompetitive. Stagnation is not the answer, and there is definitely a better middle-way.

It’s not a loss. It’s the cost of a service. Unless you’re doing headlines on hue much roads and police and fire departments “lose,” you have no basis for framing it that way here. Try not being stenographers for reactionary talking points, eh?

It actually makes more money than any other service we have, but it is in competition with private carriers, who are driving this PR campaign. Those private carriers give a slower more expensive service, not even across the whole country, but they pay their lobbyist well...

And if you were interested in good journalism: Maybe report on how mail delivery is burdened by the massive amounts of amazon, etc packages being sent through our federal post. Then, a good journalist would call for maringal wealth taxes on corporations with billions in revenue. To help people.

Come on now. Run the numbers on the municipal, provincial and federal cops next. How much are they making in profit per year? If those numbers aren’t in the positive, I expect changes

What kind of annual loss did the military have? What's the total expenditure on it since 2018? Why talk about some public services having 'losses' & not others? (That's obviously rhetorical, we all know.)

It's a PUBLIC SERVICE not a business! Fuck this capitalist propagandist framing fuck it right to Hell and back, Canada Post needs more funding and its workers need fair treatment.

It's a service, not a business. The people in charge need to be reminded of that with CATASTROPHICALLY large pay cuts because the service has gone to absolute shit.
