I made a pixel art upscaling/rotation algorithm called cleanEdge! It makes rotating pixel art as clean as possible torcado.com/cleanEdge I made a tool for it too! drop your sprites in and get some nice rotated or upscaled versions :)

it can't easily be added as an addon without changes to aseprite, but including this has actually been discussed on multiple occasions! it hasnt ended up going anywhere, but it may happen eventually :) cc @davidcapello.com (there's absolutely no pressure for this, btw!)

I don't really understand the shader code but the scaling results look a little like an SDL PoC I wrote a long long time back. Does this scale 'nearest' then draw the triangles in between by checking the non-scaled pixels for diagonals?

the shader doesnt scale anything at all, actually. it's simply rendering extra data between the source texels you can read a bit more about how it works here: torcado.com/blog/cleanEdge essentially it expands the diagonals between pixels into neighbors based on what it believes are connected shapes

🙇🏼‍♂️ Thank you for making this algorithm open source, and not selfishly hiding it inside a proprietary SaaS to make money like, say, Tinify does with its PNG optimisation algorithm. 😒

I know I'm replying a year later, but still got my fingers crossed for this to happen one day. It would help out tremendously on my professional workflow, I can't overstate it enough, so I'm wishing you the best of luck in implementing it

I use this a lot and it's really helpful but I notice the colors can have extremely subtle noisy artifacts. The stuff I do is edited with an 8 bit color format so it's good to keep track of the number of colors used in an image. Do you think this is ever gonna be fixed?

Sorry for the late reply. My laptop broke a bit ago. I used one of the sample images and there are small artifacts with the colors when you select them with the paint.net wand tool. However, screenshotting the image from the website doesn't give the image these same artifacts.

how are you getting the image, with ctrl+c or with the download? and what browser? i can't reproduce this issue in either case. using this sample image with the same rotation, in firefox/chrome/edge/etc, by ctrl+c or download, i do not get any artifacts (testing through paint․net or otherwise)

no, but it supports copy-paste, so you can easily draw in any program (paint, aseprite, etc.) and quickly copy-paste a selection to and from this tool :)

I feel like you should patent this is you haven't already, this seems like something Adobe or clip studio would try to imitate. I cannot believe this doesn't exist yet. You're a genius.

I tried out the gdshader, it looks very nice! I like that, as a sprite rotates, I don't see a grid pattern that shrinks/grows as the sprites approach a 45 degree angle :]
