this is kind of a niche issue but: if you are getting weird and hostile responses that feel a little off, there are some folks on here making accounts that automatically reply to large quantities of posts in a vaguely hostile manner. you can ignore them, and also, it's not personal

Maybe they're hoping to get as many people upset as possible before getting hit with a blocklist/banned from the site? Idk this seems like a real stupid waste of time and resources for 'em... Thankfully the ol' report n' block still does wonders since this place actually enforces their TOS.

I don't want to talk to you no more, you empty-headed animal food trough wiper! I fart in your general direction! Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries! I’m not a bot, so I’m not sure I’m doing this right. Just wanted you to feel included.

They might be a smokescreen to force more people to start using less vetted blocklists, better chance for someone to accidentally use one of their own fraudulent lists to block people they want to silence or troll mixed in with their own robotic sludge.

There's a few, but it is better just to report-then-block the few you encounter. You never know who someone might put on a blocklist, and we moved here to get away from other people's algorithms.

I keep seeing this question asked, so I wrote out a few clues to help identify bots — hopefully it's useful! bsky.app/profile/leli...

How to spot bot accounts? Many folks keep asking how to identify bots/identity churners. The truth is, it's difficult. But there are often clues that can help—especially when there are multiple bot-like indicators coming from the same account. Here are 9 strategies I use to spot the bots: 🧵

How a person feels about it, is how they feel about it. It may not be personal, but if it's attacking something about a person's identity, it feels personal, and is probably meant to. Bigotry is often not directly aimed at an individual, it is no less of a problem because of that

.... huh it's probably to demotivate/depress real people/ the left into giving up and shutting up. If you think you're grossly out numbered in a insane hateful world who's mind can‘t be changed ... it gets demotivating quickly... it's actually kinda clever... in a deeply evil super villain way.

Hey, maybe this was intentional on your part but if not fyi this is showing up as a List, not a Moderation List, evidently meaning there’s no option for others to subscribe and auto-block/mute. Distinction explained by someone else in this thread here: bsky.app/profile/spam...

Note that setting up new moderation lists (which are used to drive blocks/mutes) happens under Settings>Moderation>Moderation Lists>New, rather than under "lists" (regular lists are meant for people you want to see *more* of). I suggest that you do like I did and set up multiple lists. (2/6)

Curated lists are far and away my favorite bsky feature and I want everyone to use them. bsky.app/profile/spam...

BTW, everyone can do this, and should. We all end up putting in some work to manually block a bunch of obvious spammer/troll accounts; if you use a moderation list instead of the block button, nobody who uses that list has to do the same work you just did. Not enough people use this feature! (1/6)

Strangest thing on Bluesky, is I've had 2 accounts with celebrity names DM me, thank me for following, no fishing angle at all, and their profiles are unverified but otherwise normal seeming. Really need a better verification system on here.

I found a network like this on Reddit a long time ago and have had time to think about what they might be doing. I think it's a couple things. One, it's an attempt to intentionally toxify spaces and get people angry. Two, it tests capabilities of networks to respond to these attacks.

Three, it allows bad actors to refine their language and see what attacks and insults generate the most virulent responses. Four, similar attacks can get people to react in ways that violate TOS and get them banned OR get them to abandon social media.

i have a theory you can add as a fifth: engagement farms to boost the use/age of an account to later sell off so scammers and the like can moderadetly refresh them and have "established" accounts to seem more trustworthy

It's not just a theory! They do it ALL THE TIME; a lot of content scraper, "cute animal/nature every hour", or meme accounts are gathering followers and interaction history so they can sell the account later. Sometimes it's the actual bad actors aging the account--

i believe the way those work is they're hooked up to chatgpt or something like that and they just reply in really high volumes; you can identify them by looking at their reply tab and seeing if they're talking faster than anyone could reasonably type.

I think a lot of it is this: internetisscary.org/2024/11/20/f... - this is a big tactic of both foreign and domestic deception ops. Their goal is to poison the cultural well and make it difficult for us to have good-faith conversations with each other.

As for what these are for, experts on propaganda and fascism point out that their purpose it not necessarily to convince you to a particular worldview, but rather to destroy the idea of a common, knowable truth. They are to get you not to believe anything.

The amount of energy wasted is scary. Obscenity farms... It is a shame we can't individually cope and push back. But I hope collectively people can. I would love to follow more people who understand the backers and motives of these wasteful ventures. (?)

and also i want to be really clear that if you get this you didn't DO anything to provoke this kind of weird automated behavior, they're really just siccing the bot on everyone and your account happened to come up.

Oh so that’s probably why that one random one word bot probably showed up. Well, doesn’t matter too much at this point as long as I block them

Too bad it doesn't seem like bluesky's moderation is very responsible. I've seen the same bot accounts go on for days unrestrained. Considering the amount of people migrating from the cesspool next door, one would imagine moderation would be a priority

Remember how a couple of months ago there were hardly any people here, and none of us were maliciously creating thousands of bots to be moderated? Bluesky is a small team and still building their systems. Be kinder to them while the shit rolls in, because *they're* the ones under it.

I'm not trying to be mean, it's just that they sure are hella efficient at automatically tagging adult content (often erroneously) so one would think they would also have a bot for more harmful behaviour as well
