Some schools in Florida, Georgia and Colorado will be equipped with drones this year that can go through halls, smash windows and pepper-spray active shooters if teachers report a threat. The program follows a wave of high-tech campus security spending. https://wapo.st/4gVNMXn

All you need is a terrorist kid who is about 9 feet tall and stands completely still, vs. a kid with say, a shotgun who can hit a duck at a 100 yards so they won't be too put off by a drone 20 feet away which is 8 feet off the ground. Or a baseball bat.

oh that’s no problem, if someone hacks a drone or uses it abusively you simply send a good guy unhacked drone to go after the bad guy hacked one

Have they not met teenagers? They have Axe body spray fights after gym class. There is no way a school year goes by without some doofus deciding it'd be high-larious to pepper spray his doofus friends with one of these. Or worse, a bully will do what bullies do.

So what does it do when there isn’t a smashable window (A touted drone feature which also seems highly questionable) to provide hall access? Ask someone to open the door? Is “every room needs smashable windows” the new “every school should just have one exit”?

Who is controlling the drones? How are they activated? Can yet another douchelord techbro company completely misusing a fantasy name from Tolkien’s Middle Earth (This one is “Mithril Defense”) really be trusted?

That’s about as stupid as the idea some of the Rapepublikkkans had a few years ago about putting buckets of rocks in classrooms so the teachers and kids could throw rocks at the shooter. Remember that gem?

not just spying, i bet within one year there will be incidents of schools using the pepper spray for “discipline”. and within five years in some districts those incidents will become policies.

In future news: A sizable settlement has been reached between the parents of a student pepper sprayed by a drone and the school district. Officials remarked the cost will require cuts in school programs & personnel to continue to afford to field the weaponized UAVs to protect their students.
