We need a digital media freedom law, so these companies can't hold books/movies/music hostage anymore. It is so ridiculous that we can only access media we bought from one app or device.

Amazon is still working out the logistics of sending people to your house to black out the pages of your physical books with a sharpie.

And this is why I buy physical copies of anything I really care about and make sure they will at least probably be available (preferably for a decent price since I already bought it once) if necessary for things I care about, but slightly less and so went digital anyway.

I've been buying the majority of my ebooks from Kobo for years, because I can read the epubs anywhere. Unfortunately, some *very* popular authors I read are exclusive to Kindle. My old Kindle allowed me to deDRM those books and read them on my Kobo. That ain't gonna work next month. Sigh.

I moved to desktop & mobile apps for my ereaders awhile ago, then use 3rd party software to jailbreak the DRM to let me save & read the files anywhere

Good luck with that in France! It became the first country to outlaw planned obsolescence, defining it as deliberately shortening a product's lifespan to increase replacement rates. The law carries penalties of up to two years in prison and fines of 300,000€, or up to 5 percent of annual turnover

I don't want other services I just want to read books. Between this, ads on Video and the loss of next day delivery, what is the point of Prime membership any more? No other current ereader including modern kindles manages to give me the form factor I want, with physical buttons on both sides.

TiVo has stopped manufacturing its hardware but says it will continue to support existing hardware. I image it won’t be too long before existing "lifetime" channel guide subscriptions die.

I have an even older kindle, so I've already been working around similar nonsense for years. I will absolutely never buy a new kindle, and am glad I got mine very cheap and used.

Huh. You know what all those old ones do? They store all you books locally. Yeah, I can see how they'd hate that. Indeed, the time has come to stamp out the whole idea that ordinary people should be allowed to buy and own things rather than paying their betters rent for them.

Eh, I stopped buying from Kindle AGES ago when they kept making it harder and harder to download your books for offline use I only buy eBooks now if I know the store offers DRM-free downloads or if I can get a copy directly from the author

My eReader of choice is this cool bit of tech I got from China. Snowsky Echo Mini. It HAS wifi transfer capabilities but otherwise it's BARE BONES (only supports epub and PREFERS jpeg images) so the battery lasts AGES. Small enough to magnetize to the back of my phone too

Can’t a billionaire that rented a whole city to get married just send out new Kindles to his loyal customers? The tech industry’s subscription model is a joke and needs to end

Not too many days in 2026 when you’re vindicated as a member of the “e-reader? No thanks, not interested” dinosaur brigade. I do feel badly for those who rely on ebooks due to an inability to access print though.

Read paper legit books whenever possible. The world is being betrayed by their own governments and the tech bros Treat governments and tech bros that do not support the people as cancer. Everywhere. Every time.

lol well the IOS update usually starts to slow things down to make it irritating to use the older models (unless things like AI where the experience could be horrible on the older models).

My copy of War & Peace. Oxford World's Classics. 3 vols bound into 1, 1500 pp. Printed 1957, 2 years before I was born, & good for another lifetime. No bulb-headed MegaloOligoPath will ever be able to turn it off.

Wish we could pull support from Jeff Bezos, but americans can't seem to figure out how to order things from literally anywhere else, apparently.

It’s cheaper for me to just re-buy all my books than to buy a brand new kindle, so I won’t be buying any new kindle books (or any new kindles), even tho mine is still supported, cause I know this is what’s coming eventually

I stopped buying books and ebooks on Amazon 2 years ago. I will do everything I can to buy directly from authors and after that I currently go through Kobo and Libby. The time of this middleman who steals from authors needs to end. It's 2026, they aren't necessary.

If you've decided to switch away from buying ebooks from Amazon, try these DRM-free ebookshops instead. My list currently includes over 500 ebook, digital comic, magazine, and RPG bookshops - all selling in formats that you actually own, get to keep, and read on any device.

This is the case for any and every subscription based model. You don't own things, you pay a monthly fee to access things. And the availability of those things is never guaranteed. Shit suuuuuuuuuucks

Half the reason I've never bought an e-reader. The other half is realizing I don't retain anything longer than a news article when reading on a screen.

They make it sound like the support was a just a random arbitrary decision or o e based on $ (which could be the case). If this has anything to do with the support of newer encryptions and depreciation of older insecure ones. That could have easily added a little color to the conversation.

Jailbreak your shit, people. We don't need functionnal tech to end up in landfills just because the manufacturer decided they'd prefer if you were forced to buy new !
