If I went to Switzerland and won a Swiss watch precision contest, I would literally never talk about anything else

I went to Geneva a few weeks ago and spoke on a panel about the nature of time for a Geneva Watch Days event. While I was there, on a lark, I entered a competition to most precisely calibrate a Swiss watch. And today I found out that I won! 😃 www.instagram.com/reel/Dd6hUTB...

No one would ever be able to tell me my winged eyeliner was off. I’d be all “I’m really very precise. Do you know how I know-?”

Picture a perfect Swiss man sitting in his cubic black leather armchair, the crisp click of his lighter as he flames an unforgivingly precise jay -

K: That's a nice shed did you build that? Acquaintance: Yep, it took forever. I measured everything three times. I like to be as precise as possible, that's why it's so level and sturdy. You could say I'm a bit of a perfectionist. K: Did I ever tell you about the time I went to Switzerland?

“Honey, how much longer until our favorite TV show comes on?” “ According to MY Swiss watch, it will be on in 14 minutes and 17.437 seconds.” (sigh) “thanks”

Every conversation would start with, "Remember that time I won a contest in Switzerland for most precisely calibrating a Swiss watch? Crazy, right? Anyways, I'd like the Pick 2 with the club sandwich and cheddar broccoli soup."

Mechanical watch mechanisms, called the “movements”, are designed to keep time as accurately as possible, but the nature of imperfection in manufacturing and materials (however minute), mean they aren’t perfect. As such, they often have one or more mechanisms to minutely “speed” or “slow”

manually to correct for small imperfections. The contest likely involved using those controls to correct any latent errors in the watch movement. It would then be judged by determining how much each contestant’s watch indicated time drifted from some “source of truth” over time.

i once got an old fashioned alarm clock in a bag. completely disassembled. i put it back together, but something was binding. it never worked for more than 10 seconds without prodding. that was still a win for me, so i am super impressed. actually being able to tune a probably infinitely smaller one

Wait 'til she finds out she'd going to get invited to Butlins Skegness in November to fight it out with all the other 'winners' to become this year's champion-of-champions! Free caravan (lager not included).
