I went to Geneva a few weeks ago and spoke on a panel about the nature of time for a Geneva Watch Days event. While I was there, on a lark, I entered a competition to most precisely calibrate a Swiss watch. And today I found out that I won! 😃 www.instagram.com/reel/Dd6hUTB...

The group that invited me to speak in Geneva put up a nice post about me winning the calibration contest, with a pic of me being very kindly coached by master watchmaker Dominique Renaud & one of me with the students & the computer readout behind us (📸: Ivan Simeon) www.instagram.com/p/Dd_C8Zxioh...

Not that I'm your assignment editor, but I would love to read a blog post explaining absolutely as much detail of this whole thing that you're willing to provide. I am all of a sudden, very interested in amateur watch calibration, the existence of which I learned about from this post.

Around 1975 I talked to an old fiddler in Missouri who explained one time he got a dollar to fix a watch. He said that was a day’s wage. He said I don’t mean 8 hours I mean a day. Never went back to “work”. Y’all both have found your calling

There are probably some critical clocks on the International Space Station that need recalibration by now. Add it to your ever increasing qualifications the next time you apply to be onboarded for the astronaut program 😊 Tell them the Swiss signed-off on your logbook!

WTF! Wow! I don't think I could have more respect for anyone in any other field than making these tiny mechanical computers - maybe medical research. If I could re-do my career, I'd seriously try horology. All of which is to say, I appreciate how much goes into the achievement. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I had a job at a watch factory once, but I got fired. One week, I tried to work some overtime, but it turns out that watch factories really don't like it when you put in extra hours.

I was told that the CEOs of all the big watch companies enter the competition each year and are very invested

Seriously I can think of few more noteworthy achievements than this. Nobel, perhaps. But out-accuracying everyone in a competition to calibrate a Swiss watch? That certainly is something :)

Whoa So cool!! Are you an horologist now?? And what IS the nature of time? Is your talk recorded? It’s one of my fav subjects (also mysteries)

Yes, you are that awesome* Grats - did they give you a watch as a prize? *I was trying to figure out a phrasing that made it clear I'm not being sarcastic at all

Well done from a professional. What you did requires a very fine touch to move the regulator a small portion of a millimetre.

Oh don't tempt me with mechanical clocks... I know that's a rabbit hole far too deep for me to ever escape. Like the black hole of time-nuts. People go there and never come back :D

Well done. Sounds like you accounted for the difference in altitude at the testing room, and the acceleration it'd experience on the way there.

Seriously, every post recently has been either “Look at me doing this astoundingly cool thing” or “being chill despite having done several astoundingly cool things.”

Me: reads post out to my husband Husband: "Well, she's a physicist, isn't she? Of course she won!" (you can probably guess: he's a physicist) Congratulations! So cool.

There are little tiny tiny bits that you rotate with a tiny poky thing and then you can tweak it a bit more with a tiny screwdriver

There was a computer screen with a graph and numbers telling me the rate and its drift so I could see if the tweaks were going in the right direction

Right here is where I close the BlueSky app and get ready for bed with a smile. Again, congrats! Ps, now how about some advice on syncing my microwave, oven, & kitchen clocks? ;-)

Wow. That is very exciting news. Congratulations 👏🎉 I am so happy for you. I hope you get something you can show the world you won.
