A new study by researchers in Bern found that certain cypriniform fish species exhibit both small bodies and small genomes, a correlation that has evolved independently in at least three lineages. 🐟🧪

Instead of just just tandem repeats, these centromeres feature a pair of inverted elements (we call them "centroids") with flanking tandem repeats that expand in opposite directions. Between the centroids we find an hypomethylated region suggesting that is the location of active centromere.
