AKMA is a priest, lecturer (New Test., Greek, Early Church, Crit Theory), writer, gamer; Glasgow, Oxford, now parish ministry in Abingdon-on-Thames. Will not try [in vain?] to take away the pain of being a hopeless unbeliever. http://akma.disseminary.org

A parishioner brought her son to help out at Saturday's wedding, and then brought him with their dog to the Animal Blessing this afternoon. When he saw me there he said, ‘It’s the guy from yesterday!’ This is my new title.

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

The Lord of the Rings is essentially a series of faculty meetings broken up by several long walks in the countryside.

"This could have been an email." Aragorn whispers. "He ALWAYS pulls this shit in 'Any Other Business" Boromir replies, quietly. "It's why Faramir marked himself as busy when the invite went out."

It's really important to pay attention to the fact that Lula beat the fascist candidate not by compromising and trying to meet fascist voters in the middle, but by sticking to his guns, promising prosecutions for election interference, and mobilising his own voters to turn out in greater numbers.

I wish former presidents would attack the current regime without skating onto the thin ice of class-condescending and homophobic jibes.

No takers (especially local) for a collection of early issues of diacritics?

Speaking of which, anyone interested in a run of early issues of diacritics? I hate to relinquish it, but better now than leaving it for my progeny to do after I die.

This is essentially virtue ethics for writers! It eloquently expresses the limitations of LLMs for feedback (something I've noted in my essays on ethics and AI) and makes a compelling case for the collective practice of critiques in being a better writer (rather than creating a better product).

Through my writing life, nothing improved my writing more than participation in peer-based workshops: where a group of writers at about the same stage in their artistic development gather to read one another's work and offer feedback specifically aimed at improving each other's stories.

I say this in tutorials so often it feels like self-parody. ‘You come here to learn how to put bits of *evidence* together in a *reasoned*, *persuasive* *argument* — let’s start examining this essay to see where we find them…’

Unless the next administration(s) make annihilating the culture of impunity Job One, we may seesaw back and forth from para-fascism to centre-right democracy, but we won’t make any progress toward a government that actually serves the people, especially its most needy and vulnerable.

seems like "on the orders of a nazi every major news outlet on the planet hounded an innocent man to death because he's black" should be one of the biggest stories of the year

Does this mean we should accept all the ‘donations’ of hard copy journal runs from elderly retiring colleagues?

One might envision a comparable (if not quite so numerically impressive) future for academic theology, if it were given a chance by administrators and pedagogues.

When democrats had a senate majority I said they should conduct hearings to reexamine all his contracts. The party punted. If they do it again they deserve extinction.

Elon Musk is making a ton of money from government contracts. I think he’s severely overestimating how secure those are and how loathed he is. I hope he learns in the most painful way possible, because he has inflicted misery on so many people.

And in case it isn’t obvious enough: the Acton ad is DARVO and DARVO is abuse. It’s an acronym that stands for Deny, Attack, and Reverse Victim Offender. When abusers resort to DARVO, it causes trauma in victims. It is not just a defense of violence. It is a second act of violence.
