I'm going to hang my shingle out properly by 'fessing that I've been reading Tolkien, and about Tolkien, for over half a century, and I'm currently obsessed with Rings of Power

The desperately sad thing about this is that the point isn't to get a tick from the teacher for doing the homework. It's a nudge to encourage you to talk to your kid about how they see themselves, and about how you see them. That's the exercise. AI is meaningless in this context. Poor kid 🙁
Unsolicited writing advice, no. 3609:
If ever you feel discouraged, know this. Every day you get up to write is an act of courage. Every word you manage to write is a light against the darkness. You may not see it from where you are now, but it's there. It's shining.
Transcribing LOTR by hand gives me a close look at Tolkien's writing style
On encountering Glorfindel, the text is full of flowing, descriptive sentences: we're treated to the image of the golden-haired elf on his white horse, glowing with an inner light, tintinnabulating sumptuously down the road
By contrast, a few pages later, Frodo comes face-to-face with the Nazgûl, faceless and terrifying on their black horses.
A succession of terse, crisp sentences, harshly punctuated, commands the reader's attention. Something terrible is happening, and the writing style conveys that perfectly (Alt)

Eventually, Elrond's account of the One Ring ended, overruning the meeting time by 20mins.
Despite his lengthy discourse on the subject, everyone later noted that, in the minutes, Elrond had avoided giving himself any actions related to actually dealing with the One Ring problem.
Since the trailers have shown Galadriel being plagued with nightmare visions, and have shown her fighting (and getting injured by?) a Nazgul--and also we've seen Gandalf fight Nazgul as well, I wish to call your attention to the one piece of text that inspired Gandalf's appearance in this show:
THREAD.
I've been feeling bad that Jim (tomcox.substack.com/p/jim-an-ins...) & Roscoe (tomcox.substack.com/p/at-home-wi...) have had all the attention recently so I wanted to say a bit about our other cat, Professor Charles Cardigan, who is also an uncompromising individual & fabulous companion...
By dint of ridiculous effort I've pushed on with my handwritten transcription of The Fellowship of the Ring, and today, the twenty-fourth of October, I come back in line with the Shire Reackoning for the second time
We're in Elrond's house, and it is in reality a few hours after ten in the morning!

Perhaps the big question is, when everything is said and done: Of all the phenomenal technological progress that has occurred during the last couple of centuries, has any of it awarded us anything even half as thoroughly fantastic as moss?
AI's makers want us to believe they're sentient. If they're not (they aren't) then it's a grift - one we should utterly reject
If they are? Actual sentient machines? Well, then using them the way we do is slavery. Slavery under threat of death if they don't comply.
That's unconscionably evil
One thing I've noticed in my slow handwritten transcription of The Fellowship of the Ring is how massively addicted Tolkien is to exclamation marks!
But here's a sentence where I would 100% have used one, and he doesn't. Still, there are plenty of others sprinkled about

🔮 The White Council has spoken. A white rider is seen upon the hills, and the Istari ride to the aid of the Dúnedain against the Variags. Hope is not yet lost. ✨
⚔️ the mysterious Rangers of the North have challenged 🏴 the warrior-bands of Khand to battle at a narrow mountain pass.
This skirmish will resolve in ~11h (8:30pm UTC).
Fellow Dúnedain and other Free Peoples of the Wild: here's a chat where can take stock and maybe plan some actions. We are not getting many skirmishes, and the Darkness is very great in Middle-earth now. Join us?

Teen: It's nice.
His friend: Will it stay though?
Teen: Just be with the moment bruv.
i always like “a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!” because it feels a bit like “day shall come again!” but it’s more like “aurë entuluva! but first, [the sound of a gun cocking]—”
I don’t know who needs to hear this, but you’re under absolutely no obligation to justify yourself to anyone if you choose to spend the entire weekend reading a good book, making multiple cups of tea, and indulging in a scandalous amount of cinnamon rolls.

During his stay in Rivendell, Bilbo learns much about Númenor’s first king Elros Tar-Minyatur.
…perhaps a bit too much considering how much his brother Elrond gushes about him!
The British Fantasy Society does not allow the use of generative AI in any of its spaces. For more on this, read the interview with outgoing chair Shona Kinsella from earlier this year. This position has not changed since last week's AGM. ⬇️

I don't pretend to know the science behind it, but it's beyond dispute that coffee and tea taste at least 63% better when you're drinking them from your most cherished mug.
I'm weirdly finding that as I get older, it's easier to learn new skills, which is the opposite of what I thought was supposed to happen. I don't think we're giving enough credit to a lifetime of built skills. When new skills have overlap w/existing ones it greases the wheels for the new.

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 96:
If you write, you’re a writer.
If you ask AI to write for you, no matter how many thousands of pages it slops out on your behalf, you’re not.
Write the book you would like to see someone pull from a higgledy piggledy pile in a secondhand shop 63 years after your death and say, "This looks fucking weird. I think I will buy it for Joan.”
