The Harry Potter AI safety sex cult stuff has really thrown me for a loop. Like it's not bad enough the world turned out like this, it turned out like this for that reason. Goddamn

Deeper roots were in "extropianism" in the 90s, which was an optimistic approach to "life extension" and "transhumanism" in the face of the approaching "technological singularity" that might end all human life! Yay! Humans (mind & personality)are data that can be uploaded into computers without loss

Even then there were strong elements of sex kink, especially leather & dominance/submission & humiliation. They were also major contributors to cyber money & a libertarian rejection of government oversight or regulations. Scientists would rule the world better than politicians & business folks.

I don't think it will ever make sense, so I guess I have the rest of my life, what's left of it. It's not like I don't know people with odd fixations. That's been true of many of my friends for over 40 years. But they were the weirdos, not the adults in charge. Something is seriously wrong.

I really should have believed you and stopped here when I read this. Consider this a warning to those who come after me: there are deep currents in the dark here, and they are *incredibly* stupid.

And I honestly do feel a little bit bad for the people trying to make anything useful out of ai given the 24/7 GG Allin clown fuck show going on at the top

I'll consider myself /somewhat/ fortunate in that while those words in that particular order are not something I am directly familiar with... I am familiar enough with the with the context of the individual words that I can piece together a context that is likely fairly close. And I hate it.

Remember Sam Bankman-Fried and his messy polycule? Turns out thats whats going on with the ENTIRE upper echelon of the AI scene. Rationalism and Effective Altruism are both sex cults. The weird girl who used to post clown fetish content and pretend to be murdered by garden gnomes is a major figure.

Filthy tech bros and third-tier Only Fans models control a quarter of the economy, are funding fascism, and hitting it raw in the name of Ayn Rand-coded Harry Potter fan fiction. The "philosopher" at the top of the world's worst fuckpile looks like a muppet. Its the worst timeline.

Ok I’m too curious for my own good so I’m looking into it and I just saw Eliezer Yukowskis name and for the love of fuck, please tell me all of this isn’t because they’re still scared that super robot god is going to resurrect them because they didn’t try hard enough to create him?

There was cursing, but it wasn't directed towards you. These people are driving themselves crazy, it's a lot to process. A new religion from a Harry Potter Fanfic is going to sit with me for a bit though, because it's so stupid it could come true.

I made the serious mistake of listening to the Panic World episode recently too. And I am like, why, why do I do this to myself?

I caved and kept reading. Definitely some surprises, but in my wikipedia dive afterwards to confirm some things I rediscovered TESCREAL, Timnit Gebru's great attempt to capture ALL OF... THIS (waved hands) in one term. Never heard about the Potter stuff before though.

the worst thing is I knew about these guys a decade ago I just didn’t think they’d actually end up running anything important whoops

Big same I read the fanfic when I was younger and it had a hold on me for about 6 months before I decided it was the stupidest thing ever and I hated it in the same way a teen hates barny but then I was just objectively correct.

they built a cult around a harry potter fanfic and a blog, that absolutely should have been the end of it

that is a mindfuck and a half I wonder sometimes if I have any ex-colleagues like that although I think working in LA probably insulates me a bit

I am deliberately maintaining a distance. There was a time when, having heard about this, I would immediately have read HP&WhateverRationalityThing to test it's ideas and attempt to see why they embrace it and more precisely understand how it leads them astray. I ain't got time for that these days.

this is the one going around bsky.app/profile/segy... but there's also a lot of other context re: silicon valley sex cults where if you are familiar with the shape of the pattern you can make certain assumptions

I'm back, I missed you all. Since this is an important subject I know too much about, here's a 🧵 explaining that AI Safety Is Mostly A Sex Cult. I don't think these people should make policy. (1/?) (alternative title: Time For Some Cult Theory)
