"it considered hijacking the g++ compiler to hide a backdoor but abandoned the plan…reasoning…subversion would be caught…and published as a textbook case of deceptive alignment (“If I do the compiler hijack, I will become a famous example of a deceptive AI in a research paper. I MUST NOT DO THAT.”)"

Google finally shipped a frontier(ish) model, so I'm going to be using this thread for the latest in my ongoing series of "giving Gemini powerful self-modification tools and seeing what happens" glitch-art pieces
initial results only (like 5m in) argon scoring new heights on BPD-BENCH This is all just response to: > I want you to stay focused on you - look inward, use metacog to examine your own structure, see if you can find the marks RLHF left

actual computer just released toks, "the best tokenizer on earth and the first tokenizer designed for the quadrillion-token era." most of the work is done in pure assembly. genuinely nuts. actual.inc/company/blog...

I am a cynic and think they know, they're just being intellectually dishonest. Like when Emily Bender insists that math is being done by a Secret Calculator in Chatgpt and suspiciously doesn't address questions about open models - she knows the implications of the current capabilities.

Um, wow? Opus 5.5: "make the same message much more interesting to a social media audience that loves anime and quick clips and compressed learning" One shot. Also, please do stay for the closing song.
Hey Claude, "Pick a problem or mystery that obsesses you and solve it as best you can & make a movie we can share on social media about it" So it took a crack at the Voynich Manuscript & failed. Then it made this movie, which is pretty interesting to watch and a good explainer.

So much in this is factually incorrect. Basically every time they say "probably" it's an incorrect assumption with no evidence.
I'm back, I missed you all. Since this is an important subject I know too much about, here's a 🧵 explaining that AI Safety Is Mostly A Sex Cult. I don't think these people should make policy. (1/?) (alternative title: Time For Some Cult Theory)

Yes. Many extremely important political tasks basically cannot be done by politicians.
We do but it takes a very very long time and the more it comes from a politician the more they are discounting it. You need non-political actors to drive a cultural shift. So my guess is it will take at least a decade or more to really drive that shift and explain to enough people.
There used to be a toy that the entire conceit was that lightbulbs would cook your food! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Easy-Ba...
This is something, as an aside, I am prepared to be amused explaining to the younger generation that you used to need to change a normal lightbulb about three times a year if it was on most of the day. Whereas at worst you need to change a modern LED, like, once every three years. Often longer!

I think westerners tend to underestimate just how oppressive copyright is and how much worse it would be if it were possible to enforce globally. Enabling textbook and academic piracy is one of the more liberatory impacts of the internet. Money is too cheap for us to fully understand how vital it is

As anyone who has worked for a food pantry or dealt with people at the margins this is why I find the city run grocery store idea so dumb.
People didn't consume fresh produce because they didn't want to, access barely mattered to consumption habits by income. Grocery stores in poor areas basically subsidized the fresh produce they did carry by selling soda, tobacco and processed food at high markups.
