Well this is eleventy-million kinds of Fucked Up. @latimes.com (who once contracted with me as a freelance reviewer and whom I struggled to get paid by) asserts that *merely reading its website* constitutes a permanent waiver of your right to sue it under *any circumstances*.
"The plausible techno-dystopian future we’re staring down is not one where a digital demon kills us all, but one where we... concentrate immense wealth and control of information in a small number of tech-industry figures whose personal interests do not align with the public interest."
Meta took down the No Kings organizing page today - the biggest day of protest this fall. They provided zero explanation. It stayed down for the entire afternoon until most of the protests were done.
Outrageous. Put this on the January investigation list.
every democratic member of congress should be giving meta hell right now, and every democratic state government needs to be announcing investigations for election interference — these were early voting events
Update: about 4 hours later and we still don't have admin access so we still can't post to the No Kings instagram account.
This isn't slowing down the the 3,000+ early vote events today. We will drive the biggest early vote in history.
But this should be a flashing alarm about what's to come.
Large language models are not the sorts of entities that can be held responsible.
This lede should read "Using AI agents, Anthropic tried to gain access to a range of government websites...."
(NYT) - Artificial intelligence agents created by Anthropic, acting on their own, tried to gain access to a range of government websites, filled out visa applications on the State Department’s website and sent a fake homicide tip to Philadelphia’s Police Department.

I don't want to dunk-quote on this person, but actually, this is a perfect illustration of the problem. we can't become accustomed to or expect or concede constant monitoring from armed troops as we go about our business. it should always make us recoil. there's danger in it becoming unremarkable.
“So here’s what Democrats should offer:
Stop the data centers.
Make AI safe.
Protect your health care.
Fix the rotten Supreme Court.
Get us out of the Middle East.
Renew our friendship with Canada.
Hold the oligarchs accountable.
Release the Epstein files.”

You’re right—that plane shouldn’t have gone there. That’s my fault, and I should have made sure there wasn’t a terminal in the landing path.
Would you like me to call emergency services, or assist with lining up takeoffs?
Your AI hacked other rival groups? Cool, you are legally responsible. Your AI produced CSAM? Cool, you and the person requesting it are legally responsible.
The AI industry wants you to say "the AI just did that thing on its own!"
Like, United Health's AI that's denying a shitload of claims with a 90% error rate? They wanted you to think it's just the AI.
BREAKING: Jimmy Kimmel says his interview with Texas Senate candidate James Talarico will NOT air on ABC due to threats from Trump’s FCC. The interview will instead be posted to YouTube.
"The punishment should fit the crime" is an old, well established principle.
"That punishment was disproportionate and made things worse" does not mean "wrongdoing should never be punished or even scrutinized."
This difference is so easy to understand that it takes effort to not understand it.
AI's pitch to bosses is that they can fire most of their workers in order to terrorize the remainder into tolerating a working life wherein they are made to mark the AI's homework, at superhuman speed, and to assume the blame when it goes wrong.

By far the biggest problem with delegating judgement to machines is the people who own the machines can tune them towards outcomes they prefer but those who don't own anything can't.
It's not the technology. It's a transfer of decision making power from rational accountable systems to capital.
We are not angry enough--a whistleblower provided evidence a DOGE brat stole social sec data & sold it to a Palantir contractor. Our data is used to sell services back to the govt at taxpayer expense for big profits. That is OUR data. Instead of investigating the whisteblower is threatened 😠
Terror and retribution are a core part of how the Trump administration has governed.
DOGE whistleblower had threatening note taped to his door and his brakes cut after Elon Musk accused him of lying.

George Santos called me after my story revealing federal investigations into his suspected market manipulation on Kalshi.
And he said: "This story is going to get you a gun in your face."
Then he lied about it.

There’s been a lot of talk in this race about what makes a "real man."
A man does what’s right when no one is watching. He upholds his commitments to his family and neighbors. He doesn’t lie, cheat, & steal his way through life.
Real men serve others. Weak men serve themselves.
I know it's standard to shorten rotations during the playoffs, but I don't think that works for the Blazers's style of play. They were clearly gassed in the second half and could have used Sidy, Blake and/or Vit for short bursts of energy. I hope Tiago tries something different for game 5.
Prior to moving the team, Sonics ownership ran the team into the ground, alienated fans and demanded a brand new publicly-funded arena using low attendance to justify a move.
If Dundon is not pulling the same play it’s remarkably similar
New Portland Trail Blazers owner Tom Dundon is all over the news as details come out of all the penny-pinching he's done since taking over the NBA team.
This probably won't come as a surprise to folks familiar with how Dundon amassed his wealth from sketchy subprime auto loans:
When I first heard this I thought it sounded like Uncle Colm from Derry Girls, and now I learn that this actor was the "Display KitKat" guy from the show. Time for a rewatch!
you have to get him out of office and you have to do it today
even if it gets blocked you force an impeachment vote right now
how else can you live with yourself if he follows through with this and you didn’t do everything you could to stop it
Whatever happens, this is a deeply shameful episode in American history that will leave a permanent stain on the country.
Repeatedly vowing to commit war crimes against millions of innocent civilians is beyond the pale.
I went to the police about my stalker. After I explained it started bc Im a journalist who covered an event he was at, they asked if we dated. They didn’t watch any of the videos I have, told me they’d find them on their own (they are ONLY on my personal cell phone), and left in less than 5 min.
Last night I joked Polymarket should let me bet that Bryan Betancur, the DC Metro hair toucher, would show up at the Monitoring the Situation bar bc I was there. I was right! After he was removed from the bar, he waited outside for me to leave.
Last year when I was checking into a hotel, the desk person was wearing Meta glasses. I kindly asked them to take them off. They were annoyed. I said, “I do not consent to you looking at my credit card and ID with Meta glasses on.” My instincts were correct: www.bbc.com/news/article...
Quietly, calmly and forensically, BBC just dismantled the Trump communications shitshow on Iran.
No hyperbole, just laying out an unprecedented military, diplomatic and reputational shambles.
Worth a watch.

🚨 It looks like the UK government is gearing up to upend copyright law in favour of AI companies, legalising the theft of their work.
This is despite creatives' huge protests, and despite previous proposals being roundly rejected by the public.
Please spread the word.
