Never let anyone tell you this was unforeseeable. I was a teenager when DHS was created and I remember the memes (though we didn’t call them that yet) about “homeland security” being a Nazi term. Plenty of people knew at the time that DHS was a bad, dangerous, and unamerican idea.
I voted against the establishment of the Department of Homeland Security and I was pleased to speak with Ta-Nehisi Coates @VanityFair about the mood surrounding that debate.

Stating the obvious at this point, but the killings by ICE & CBP aren't isolated incidents; they're the product of a culture of contempt for and casual brutality toward civilians.
I have been actively involved in protest movements for 24 years. I have never seen anything approaching this scale. Minneapolis is not accepting what's happening here. ICE fucking murdered a woman for participating in this, and all that did is bring out more people, from more walks of life.
I'm seeing lots of people debating if Dems should focus more on ICE, more on affordability, etc.
Do this. This message got to my sister, who's not following this stuff closely, and it made her angry
AOC: I want everybody to understand that the cuts to your health care are what’s paying for this. You get screwed over to pay a bunch of thugs in the street that are shooting mothers in the face.
Bessent on institutional investors: "I's a good idea to have them out of the [housing] market. We're going to give guidance to see what is a mom & pop. Maybe your parents for their retirement bought 10 or 12 homes. We don't want to push the mom & pops out, we just want to push everyone else out"
With this vote, Congress makes ICE the highest-funded federal law enforcement agency in history, with more money per year at its disposal over the next four years than the budgets of the FBI, DEA, ATF, US Marshals, and Bureau of Prisons combined.
🚨🚨 NEW: House passes sprawling domestic policy bill, sending it to Trump's desk
Final House vote is 218-214, with TWO Rs voting no (Massie & Fitzpatrick).
Senate passed it 51-50.

I've done this in an effort to AI-proof assignments (which is essentially impossible to do unless they are entirely in class and by hand). If you ask ChatGPT about anything you actually know about, you'll catch it committing what are often major errors right off the bat. But they'll sound smooth.
Yep. And I'd encourage folks who don't understand this to make a personal one-time exception to any "don't ever use AI for anything ever" policies they may have. Because if you actually push on this stuff, it's quite illuminating. (Quick thread.)
i really really hate how many people on the left are responding to good advice on dealing with ICE with "so they don't abide by the law anyway"
ignore people who tell you not to take basic safety precautions like knowing your rights.
those people aren't your friends
I know this is going to sound naive or earnest, but I genuinely find myself shocked by how little people seem to be upset by the levels of corruption we're seeing. Is that the median voter assumes everyone is corrupt already? Or isn't actually getting stories about the corruption?
New — The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) was told this week by DOJ that they'd lose their funding if the org didn't remove any mentions of LGBTQIA+ issues from their public materials, I've learned. Staff were told they need to deadname trans kids in their reports to comply.
When asked if he was going to visit the crash site he said, ‘what site? The water? You want me to go swimming?’ This is one of the last pics of the young skaters who died. He’s a sociopath. Anyone who voted for this monster should be ashamed at best.
Sloppy. We’ve been told they better prepared & well organized for 2.0 but I’m seeing a lot of cracks in the facade and that’s an opportunity for people who love democracy to protect it.
Billionaires have more money than they could ever need but never enough to fill the holes in their souls. They would send every last one of you into an early grave if it meant paying one cent less in taxes.
Wow! I received an email describing an "opportunity" to review textbook chapters constituting 75+ pages of close reading and note taking, not counting the table of contents (for what, copy editing?) and filling out a multiple page "survey" for each chapter.
I had to email the recruiter multiple times to confirm that I would have to read more than one chapter plus other materials because the initial replies were evasive.
I've appeared on TV for a pittance more than once, but at least then I got a hair and makeup person following me around with a tailed comb and face powder like I was a kpop idol and I was on FUCKING TV ffs.

For $150. This would probably pencil out to paying less than the minimum wage of some states. The only way to make it worthwhile would be to totally phone it in/let ChatGPT do it for me.
The "opportunity" was especially problematic because the recruitment email was not straightforward about how much review was involved, and the online form to "apply" was worded to contractually obligate me to complete the review without spelling out how much work would be involved.
I turned The Force Awakens on in the background while doing final grades this morning for my first rewatch in a long time. I wonder whether many male viewers ever realized how scary Rey’s living situation on Jakku actually is? I don’t think JJ Abram’s actually did tbh
Yum yum.

I worked with Han Solo. Kind of. I knew Han Solo. Han Solo was... well, I wouldn't say he was a FRIEND, exactly. The kriffing moof milker who posted this is no Han Solo.
The reason the coup attempt in South Korea failed as quickly as it did is because South Koreans immediately rushed to the streets to say “we won’t let you do that” and force the military to decide whether they’d shoot their fellow citizens or not.
Important for us remember over the next 4 years.
