Friend lives in South Dakota. Her home heating oil bill was >$1000. Oil delivery guy was apologetic and went on an extended rant re: Trump. Said it was the worst he’d ever seen it and people were barely getting by. Unsolicited. In South Dakota. Something tells me this time is going to be different.

OSSOFF: Mike, you just confused Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act despite reading from your notes ☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️☠️

As a fun pro tip that I learned (pretty sure from @tkingfisher.com?)— if you’re traveling and don’t have a store membership, (local area code) + 867-5309 will almost always pull up an account. Got me $4 off laundry detergent on my trip!

We’ve spent many, many hours over the past few months searching the rock pools of Cornwall for a rainbow sea slug. Today, we finally found one! Absolutely worth all the time we’ve spent - it was truly breathtaking.

I fell in love with apple history reading “The Botany of Desire” in college — it’s such an amazing mirror of American history writ large. I’m always reminded that “as American as apple pie” means an American story that began with immigrants carrying hope and trees across oceans.

Apple "detectives" wanted to identify a gnarly old tree growing on a remote plot of land in Maine. What they discovered was the key to a centuries-old apple mystery.

I keep seeing videos of a guy who catches crabs and lobsters, cracks all the barnacles off them, puts a shrimp in their claws and throws them back. can you imagine. abducted by aliens but they just give you a spa day and hand you two hot dogs and let you go

Meredith MPH reposted

Yep. This isn’t going to be decided by anyone on blue sky. It’s going to come down to a bunch of suburbans who last thought about politics two years ago looking at gas prices the morning they go to the polls and voting accordingly

Nathan Goldwag@goldwagnathan.bsky.social

The root of why so many discourses about voting On Here are so toxic is that the people who actually decide most elections have basically zero involvement in them, and on some level we all understand that.

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

Why were there only 3 measles deaths in the last 10 years Robert

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

RFK Jr defends measles: "In 10 years, there have been 3 measles deaths in America. There are now about 1.2 million deaths every year from food-induced illness. The media and certain demagogic politicians are constantly trying to scare us about infectious disease."

I really shouldn’t be surprised by anything he says at this point, but a) I don’t think bragging about foodborne illness deaths is something he wants to do right now and b) of course we don’t have more measles deaths, it’s hard to die of a disease you don’t get because you’ve been vaccinated for it.

Re: PA: We can’t always determine cause of death if there are multiple problems. It’s like if a person overdoses while COVID+. Was the COVID incidental or did respiratory compromise make them more vulnerable to overdose? But… barring trauma, pretty rare for a newborn to die of a splenic rupture.

This is why we say “measles-associated” death. The coroner needs time to look at medical records, do interviews, do an autopsy before they can make a determination. Correlation does not imply causation. Except, in this case, you’d have to believe a newborn has multiple fatal problems. Defies logic.

Seeing a lot lately on recalls (or lack thereof) — it’s important to note that number of recalls is a terrible metric. What matters is how many people get sick before you identify that you need a recall as well as how quickly you get the food off shelves. Also if the government compels recalls! ⬇️

Losing inspectors and having lax regulations also means the food supply is simply less safe overall. There are always recalls/outbreaks, pathogens grow in food and it is what it is, but right now, we’re doing a terrible job of tracking them, identifying them, and stopping people from getting sick. ⏹️

The problem with losing FoodNet surveillance is that it is taking us far longer to identify outbreaks, which means far more people are getting sick before we recall the food item, and it seems to be taking far longer to identify what the problem food items actually are. (See: cyclospora.) ⬇️

Fucking Christ alive. This is fucking horrific. Like the dude was obviously a fabulist and probably a plagiarist but SO ARE ALL FUCKING ACADEMICS. He was also still a vulnerable, autistic Black man and the entire campaign against him was motivated by racism. All these things can be true.
