I make complex technology trustworthy to the people who know enough to challenge it. Also helping software teams navigate capitalism.

Fwiw, in fintech people tend to find it very obvious that you shouldn’t accidentally send 50000 EUR instead of 500 EUR, or let money disappear.
We currently find the equivalent harder to articulate for other types of software eg products, data or services that might affect the safety of others.
We as software practitioners (professionals who design/make software) need to learn from adjacent fields like medicine and engineering and consider potential harm to other humans as a basic criteria for our decision making. Hiding it behind abstractions like “customer impact” is cowardly.

no, not the model. 14 lines, with rhyme scheme and meter. no more empty claude speak. evocative imagery. erudite aura.
Listening to a report about Google chopping down a quarter of a million trees in Finland to build a data centre while washing out yoghurt pots for the recycling
My arty day in Madrid summarised:
1. Here are some pretty borders
2. Well I define all the borders
3. Your borders fuck up my ability to eat
4. Fuck all your borders
I thought the counterstrike incident a couple years back would be the final push to get infrastructure-software regulated or controlled in any way. But then I remembered it took maybe EIGHTY YEARS for the uk to do this to railways significantly so um... yeah. It's a long road (or track?) ahead.
Not a single word of this is hyperbolic in the slightest.
Buy your friends in cybersecurity the drink or chocolate of their choice right now. We are not doing well
I only realised this when I said it in the car on the way to the airport and hugely confused my other half. I do occasionally wish this brain stored words.

The uk government covered:
- access for poorer people (the parliamentary service comes from here)
- standardising gauge (basically the usb-c argument 😅)
- fixing arguments for freight revenue
BEFORE harm reduction or safety significantly:
This is... pretty much how consumer journos work. They'll cover a job or story in an area, get rehired freelance, and eventually its their thing. Industry reporting is different to consumer reporting - you expect them to know more from industry they're reporting on, as their audience knows more.
I saw a screenshot of this and had to go and check if it was real. How can you be the BBC’s cyber correspondent and not have heard of PHP before yesterday? *And* now be talking confidently about it on the news.

I expect someone writing for the Society pages of the Guardian to know what a social care Direct Payment is. I expect someone writing for Lex to know what quantitative easing is. They're not the same as a consumer facing journo, who are for the general public and not industry specific professionals.
Well I suppose when I say “I met these friends on a PHP channel” to people outside software I now only have to explain the channel part of that sentence and not the PHP part. 😅
So I still have access to a bunch of client systems that they have forgotten about. I offered to give them a list of these systems for them as part of handover and they refused.
😅
Anyhoo who wants me to add LinkedIn posts in Swedish Chef speak? 😁
The AirBnB hosting change to limit what can be asked of the guests for cleaning is a great example I’m keeping on the discussion roster for the code or the software only being one part of the product.
Ok those people trying to split a capsule into 3 using yoghurt - can I say both Nutella and peanut butter also work, are shelf stable and can be put on a cracker very easily, or put in a sandwich.
Just don’t bring your adhd meds in peanut butter to an airport. You’ll have some explaining to do 😅
3 months. Spent one whole day fiddling with some unlabelled button under the desk - armed police arrived. Took out their stock ordering system by making the fatal mistake of reading the screen and choosing “list suppliers”.
Was basically the series White Gold but with crappy phones. 😁
I think this is like "do you want a biscuit that reminds you of being a kid" or "do you want a biscuit that kid you would have wanted" instead of the ones you actually ate.
M&S are great at straddling that line eg double stuffed custard creams. Always grab them when in the uk.
I asked you your favourite biscuit and you said 'oh a hob nob' or 'digestive' or 'bourbon' and you thought it would make me think you authentic and real but you should have said 'the poshest ones I can find for the posh ones are the best' as that is the truth you hide and now I know you are a coward
This was.... geography. There was a 10 minute faster option that went via Southampton Airport Parkway but it would have meant going further out on a faster train, then back.
There were cheaper ways to use that option, but does 10 minutes really matter overall for a 90min journey - up to the person
Liquidambar leaf palette. This tree puts on such a stunning show in October. If you know of one growing near you maybe go and visit it -they look like a sycamore or maple that’s part of a Pride parade…intense leafy dopamine fireworks 🍁:
