Waking up to unexpected good news is nice.
Despite illegal US intervention, manipulation of Meta’s algorithms to favor Bolsonaro Jr., opposition from Brazil’s largest television network, and the politicization of Brazil’s electoral court, the impossible happened. LULA, PRESIDENT OF BRAZIL! 🇧🇷 Against all odds, democracy prevailed.

I just want to name that people overcame this. Even against a stacked deck, the good fight is worth it. Win or lose, it's worth it. And sometimes the good guys win.
Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

A carefully planned Russian propaganda operation is underway. Having starved people in Oleshky for months, Russia, with the 'intervention' of Melania, will allow people to leave and pretend Ukraine was at fault. Read @zarinazabrisky.bsky.social www.kyivpost.com/analysis/88041

Today together with Prof. John McCutcheon lab @arizonastateuni.bsky.social we have visualized by cryoEM what looks like a very funky ribosome from an insect endosymbiont. We believe there are important evolutionary implications. Here the pre-print: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

One of the coolest use of RAPPL by John McCutcheon and Israel Fernandez. They RAPPL isolated ribosomes of bacterial endosymbiont from 2 wild cicadas and solve structures of mosaic ribosomes. Great work here and very happy that our method help them solve structures. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Our work out today in @nature.com! We identified a previously unknown function for WEE1 in cell cycle control that could explain some of the inhibitor side-effects. We found WEE1 inhibits APC/C(Cdh1) to promote S-phase and cell cycle entry. Inhibit Wee1 , block or impair cell cycle entry.
Promising cancer drugs called Wee1 inhibitors have been limited by serious side effects. Researchers have discovered a previously unknown role for Wee1 that could explain why. The findings could help identify patients most likely to benefit & support development of safer, more targeted treatments.
Our plus/minus cryo-tide CDK11-cyclin L-SAP30BP #cryoEM reconstructions are now publicly available: www.emdataresource.org/EMD-59987 www.emdataresource.org/EMD-59992
During this time, @amymcgeoch.bsky.social in my lab started working with the CDK11 complex, which showed strong preferred orientation. Addition of the original (BH) cryo-tide induced additional particle views, which eventually helped us determine the 2.3 Å-resolution structure of the complex.

Innocent people were killed by a belligerent foe of the United States because of this choice made by the President and the richest man in the world. It is gross failure and they should both be stripped of all power.

Together with other scientists I’m suing the 🇺🇸 US National Institutes of Health for violating our 1st Amendment rights & censoring our health science. I’m ready to shine a light on the darkest days. Buckle up, read on. This gets pretty wild… THREAD
By terminating research grants like Kelton's to censor views it doesn’t like, the NIH is blocking scientists from work that would advance public health for all of us. We're pushing back. Tell Congress to demand the NIH restore the grants and stop its censorship campaign at aclu.org/nih_censorship_
According to @theguardian.com, this has now been corrected, though some statements about crystallising organisms and bacteria still remain. 🤷♂️

New paper from the lab. A fantastic collaboration with the Nijhawan and DeBrabander labs led by Holly Guo, Ye Tao and Victor Cruz.

We recently had one of the most renowned & decorated US researchers present to us by zoom. They requested we not, as we usually would, record the session. This was so they could speak freely about things like climate change without fear of funding cuts, sth they gave examples of happening to peers🫥

Also happened when I applied for faculty positions in Europe, and as far as I can tell it still happens.
You may be horrified to learn that at Monash until recently (not sure if still true or not) one of the measures was, I shit you not, “Cumulative Impact Factor”, which is the *sum* of the IFs of the journal of each of your papers.

Strikingly, @claudioalfieri.bsky.social and his team demonstrate that using cryo-tides, they can obtain high-resolution structures of APC/C, which otherwise requires carbon support.

"An ambulance was seen arriving at the prison where Pike was to be executed and then leaving. Medical aid was being administered, according to online federal court records." The utter absurdity of the state trying twice to kill someone and then calling an ambulance. We must end the death penalty.

I spoke with @nature.com about the Nikon Small World controversy. As AI becomes part of scientific imaging, we need greater transparency about what was measured, inferred or generated. It's not about excluding AI. It’s about preserving trust in scientific evidence. www.nature.com/articles/d41...
This further highlights the risks of using tools that were created by companies who were, well, "not very selective" with how they sourced the information required to develop their models. It is becoming increasingly unlikely that users of these tools are being treated any differently.
Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc

Ignore for a moment the question about whether Anthropic trains on user sessions. I am I right in reading this as saying that Anthropic's "never-before-discovered" reverse transcriptase was *patented* three years ago?
