I’ve slept on it now and when I woke up, I was still still mad about it. This morning, I’m going to ring the constituent office of my local FF TD and tell him just how mad it made me. Then I’m going to call the constituency office of my local SF TD, and ask if Matt Carthy’s support is their view.

Simon McGarr@tupped.bsky.social

No, I’m still mad about this consent business. I don’t think it is enough just to say it.

'Are EU Kidding Me?', my critique of the EU KIDS Act, the EC's chaotic social media ban, is now forthcoming in the excellent Georgetown Law Technology Review. The proposed social media ban, the EU KIDS Act, is perhaps the most chaotic law I have ever read! New paper: Are EU Kidding Me? Notes from a Poorly Drafted Social Media Ban. files.michae.lv/papers/veale_areEUkiddingme.pdf In the spirit of the proposal I have stayed offline and read no takes.

Irish plans to exempt processing of your data for AI from the GDPR are "not in line with the Charter of Fundamental Rights"; they amount to an "illegal change of primary law"; they "exempt AI from the guarantees in the Treaties and render them largely meaningless". Damning, from the leading expert.

Paul Nemitz@paulnemitz.eupolicy.social.ap.brid.gy

My take on the #Omnibus and changes to #GDPR as proposed by the Irish #Presidency: https://lnkd.in/p/eJ_ypdXy

linkedin.com#presidency #germany #commission #personaldata #ai #gdpr #charter #treaty #artificial #gdpr #eu #omnibus #dsgvo #ki #dataprotection #privacy #datenschutz | Paul NemitzThe plans of the Irish #Presidency, supported by #Germany and the European #Commission, to in practice exempt the collection and processing of #personaldata for #AI related purposes largely from the discipline of #GDPR are not in line with the #Charter of Fundamental Rights nor the #Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union. In a time where #Artificial Intelligence is already as ambient as electricity, the changes on the table in the Council amount to an illegal change of primary law, namely of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European and of the Charter of Fundamental Rights, both of which guarantee the protection of personal data, through an act of secondary law in the form of amendments to GDPR. It is likely that thus the Court of Justice would annul such secondary law #GDPR amendments, as they factually exempt AI from the guarantees provided in Treaties and render them largely meaningless in a world in which AI is already all over the place. At a time when California has strengthened it's law on AI and privacy, and even in Washington the discussion on third party controls and protections against AI risks and overrrach are taking off, the path pushed by the Irish Presidency and some others is anachronistic. Emptying GDPR from it's relevance for AI would add further damage to the cardinal sinn of the AI Act, which does not forsee any new ex ante third party controls on AI and thus provides a lower level of protection of public interests and individuals than is provided through legal requirements such as ex ante building permits in construction or ex ante type appproval for new Car designs. The future of AI in Europe is not secured by continued exceptionalism for AI but on the contrary by starting to apply normal principles of law and protection of public interest to AI as they have been applied to other technologies, from atomic power to pharmaceuticals and chemicals, for ages. Rather than the weakening of the rules, the age of AI and it's hyperpersonalised agents of the future require stronger personal data protection rules, as Tim Cook of Apple said, and the risks of AI as we see them unfolding require ex ante controlls. The Commission and the Council should now see the signs of the times and turn around to pursue a course of strengthening rather than weakening protections.#EU #Omnibus #DSGVO #KI #Dataprotection #Privacy #Datenschutz

I don’t think that this should just be shrugged off. One of our Ministers (Enterprise or Justice, probably) has presented this plan. It isn’t an anonymous creature called the Irish Presidency. That is our Government.

The €1bn spent on fossil fuel sinces April would have put 8kw battery & solar on 100,000 homes buying them energy freedom for 20+ years. The €1bn+ that will be spent over the next few months would bring that to 250,000 homes. What we lack is will and vision

It’s very hard to enforce or adhere to stupid performative law.

aside from the more significant issue of their patron also supporting a project run by someone who promotes rampant racism and calls for mass deportations, but if Progress Ireland’s whole deal is promoting building, is it not fair to expect their head to read the Development Plan?

The real reason is to install more cameras. It’s all a poor substitute to dealing with the problem.

Trumps visit is not a State one but rather a promotional tour for his private property. The Irish taxpayer foots the bill. It is important that no serving government meets with him there. Plenty of conference rooms in Shannon airport.

There are no studies that support that more cameras result in lower crime rates. A modest reduction in car parks is about it. You only have to look at the UK to see if has almost no effect. Pillaging of stores, mobile phone theft …
