Few things as titillating as book review snark: “If you are seeking a Christmas present for someone you really don’t like, give them a copy.”

That it'll fail because they lack sufficient consolidation and centralized control does not make it trivial that the president of the United States is trying to steal elections and produce an illegitimate sham Congress. It is open rebellion against the Constitution and morally tantamount to treason.

One way that I remain deeply pessimistic: We didn't get here purely because of xenophobia. In part we got here because everyone thinks that achieving border security is possible, and it isn't. When it fails, it looks like a failure, and the electorate says, "Wow, maybe we need something harsher."

1/ The Musk-Trump decision to degrade Ukraine's Starlink access as a pressure tactic is a disaster not just for the United States' reputation but for the entire US defence industry. Musk's action may end up burning the whole industry. ⬇️

When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

Recommend: Colin From Accounts Very funny, well-written little comedy series from Australia. Terrific comic acting. Likable characters. Dog-forward.

Every week, the Muppets have to put on a show to salvage a new institution: the Kennedy Center, the Supreme Court, the No-Mask Lesbian Bar, the Wonka Experience, Kozmo Dot Com (this has a time travel dimension, à la Quantum Leap), Cafe Loup in the West Village, democracy, the third season of GLOW

Here's a gift link to my 9/11 essay in the NYT. Civil libertarians long warned that before giving government new powers, we should consider how an administration with authoritarian ambition might abuse them. We were told that America was too exceptional to elect such a person. Well here we are.

CC from my post there: the problem is deeper than trying to do too much with too little. Our fundamental theory about how military force is both generated and used is obsolete. The funding doesn’t matter; you can’t fund yourself out of an inaccurate assumption. The bill comes due anyway.

the famous line about how michael caine treated the muppets as fellow actors and tim curry treated himself as a fellow muppet keeps running through my head we have a lot of brilliant actors, but how many of them can really pull off 'unhinged muppet' the way curry could? what a tremendous loss

Literally nobody, including MAGA, had any ideological commitment or pre-existing policy goal of picking a fight with Canada. This is all happening solely because the crazy old man randomly blurted it out. And that makes it worse. There's nothing to negotiate, no aim to satisfy. He's just insane.
