Explaining to my grandkids that back in my day a picture like this required you to actually get 700 beds and put them on the beach instead of asking AI to draw it. [Left picture is from Pink Floyd's 1987 Momentary Lapse of Reason album]

🧵 Matt Yglesias is one of the biggest reasons the Democratic Party leadership is so feckless, cowardly, and lazy. I'm not exaggerating. Yglesias is often a featured speaker at private Democratic Party events, despite almost always being wrong. Let's discuss...

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

“‘There’s no way to sugarcoat this,’ Lau told them. Springer Nature felt that Scientific American’s criticism of Trump was threatening their broader business—selling subscriptions to their scientific journals. The federal government was a major client.”

Emmet Fraizer@woolsox.bsky.social

Last summer, Scientific American's owners were stalking the site, making sure it wasn't being too critical of Trump. This summer, the magazine was sold and gutted. I wrote about it for The Nation www.thenation.com/article/soci...

We may never know how many advances we’re missing out on due to modern lab safety standards, with chemists no longer eating or smoking in the lab and tasting something unexpectedly yummy or tripping balls.

I'm no legal scholar but this seems like a cogent analysis of why enlarging the SCOTUS is our best choice.

These are good questions. So I'm going to spend a little time giving my answers to them. Will build it as a full thread that posts all at once, rather than post by post.

Calls for expanding #SCOTUS are entirely (and increasingly) understandable. But as today's "One First" explains, there are at least four difficult questions that those who support expansion should have to answer—especially as compared to other possible reforms: www.stevevladeck.com/p/bonus-257-...

Q: Can you name a time when you voted against Trump and it changed the outcome? SUSAN COLLINS: At one point, I had organized people to vote against Sec. Hegseth. At the very last minute one of our Republicans changed his mind. Otherwise he would've been defeated. Q: So it didn't change the outcome

Have to be clear just how dangerous this is. If it continues, it effectively removes constitutional rights from an entire class of people. Imagine you had to fear that if you criticize the regime, any error on paperwork filled out by your family decades ago could be used to strip your citizenship.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

KRISTI NOEM: I'm confident Ilhan Omar will finally be held accountable for her crimes? BENNY JOHNSON: What are those crimes? NOEM: When people apply to come to this country, if you go back and find that anything could be wrong or misrepresented, that's when it voids or cancels their citizenship

Think about how little your representatives have said or done to defend their colleague Ilhan Omar. Now try to imagine how little they will do when it's our turn.

New paper! Accepted at Perspectives on Psychological Science. A textbook finding in infant psychology is that newborns - within ~1 hour of birth - visually track a simplified 'three blob' facelike stimulus further than its inverted control (see picture). This suggested inborn knowledge of faces!

Dr Nick@nmwilkinson.eurosky.social

ok the editorial and publication process is taking too long, so here is link to the accepted manuscript for our systematic review of the newborn face preference literature. it unearths a rather strange tale. check it out, any thoughts much appreciated www.researchgate.net/publication/...

The NYPD just released surveillance video of the ICE shooting (which occurred off camera). Two men in civilian clothes run up to a car with guns drawn. One second later, one man begins smashing the butt of his gun into the driver’s side window. The driver appears to panic and hit the gas.

Parenting hits exactly the same when you work in AI. If you outsource it your children will be strangers. He's just using a computer instead of a Nanny.

Jess Calarco@jessicacalarco.com

It's telling that men would rather try to invent tech to replace humans' role in caregiving than step up as equal partners in parenting. Telling, that is, in that it shows how financial capitalism and patriarchy work together to dissuade men from doing "unprofitable" labor, like the work of care.

One thing I find endlessly funny about the rise of AI is that it has revealed that there is a large number of people who believe that the reason they wrote essays at school or university is their teachers were desperately waiting for them to provide a definite answer to “Lear: what’s up with him?”

Dr Dean Burnett@drdeanburnett.bsky.social

"By using AI, tasks like essays that used to take hours can be completed in minutes!" Sure, like how if I arrive at the gym and immediately go for a shower, my workout is done in record time. And if I throw my sandwiches straight in the bin, I can finish my lunch in under 10 seconds.

I can imagine a future in which old Dells with a functional installation of Windows 10 are sold on ebay for north of $10,000. (I doubt it, but I can imagine it)

There is an argument that some AI-psychosis-sufferers tend to make which I find very gross, stupid, and bad. It goes something like, “the way you are talking about Claude sounds a lot like how they used to talk about [some historically marginalized group], sooo, you better think about that”.

As of today, the CDC has changed (reverted) their Covid guidance to make the vaccine recommended for all people over 18. In addition to being a smart public health move, this recommendation also means insurance must cover it. Read more here: www.cdc.gov/covid/hcp/va... Listen to a breakdown here:

Alternative view: Any institution beset by such a gauntlet of challenges in rapid succession would struggle. Higher education is adapting to these challenges with varying success in different aspects. But that wouldn't make for a good headline would it?

ProPublica spoke to dozens of people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.” We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words. ➡️ This is what they wrote:

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Chris Wright now says there may be no deal with Iran after all: "There may not be a nuclear agreement. It may be simply destroying their capabilities to do it. An agreement may await the next administration in Iran. We simply don't know that."

So many of the supposed divides in the Democratic caucus simply boil down to "this one will fight for all of us, this one will not" and for the past two years Team Fight is sweeping the board.

Sahil Kapur@sahilkapur.bsky.social

Even in this generational moment for Democrats, it’s not enough to just be younger. Primary voters need to believe the candidate has big ideas too. Markey won by highlighting his progressive credentials and casting Moulton to his right and as too tied to establishment orthodoxy.

In 20 years or so we will look back to the era when talking to any company on the phone required us to spend about 10 minutes arguing with an AI, eventually resorting to screaming "OPERATOR" until it relented, and shake our heads in wonderment.

This thread is amazing, long, and worth the read. You'll learn about the history of the DMCA and how it intersects (negatively) with technology
