NEW: USAID cuts have threatened decades of forest conservation in Guatemala, forcing communities to find new ways to fund their work and protect the forest. “The withdrawal of USAID was [at] a very critical moment,” says Sergio Balan, a coordinator at Guatemala’s national conservation agency.

Returning to this post from last spring, and it feels more obvious than ever. Just a series of 30-second ads of rapid-fire headlines about scandals in one Cabinet department with the tag line at the end: Had Enough? Vote Democratic

Kevin M. Kruse@kevinmkruse.bsky.social

In the 1946 midterm elections, the GOP used public anger over meat shortages to win back both houses of Congress for the first time in over a decade. Their message for those midterms was a simple one that Democrats should borrow: “Had enough?”

In terms of people who would otherwise have lived dying there’s a case for it being the worst thing any leader has done this century, easily one of the worst, but people usually on about Amerikkka are often silent because it is something good the US was doing that stopped in the worst possible way

Objecting to the destruction of USAID is a pretty clean litmus test for being a serious person and not evil a surprising number of otherwise bad people pass this test, and a shocking number of people who pretend to care do not

Have you seen any reporting on how solar power generation in the USA is 5 times higher than it was in 2020 in mainstream outlets? If not, why do you think this is not being widely covered the same way other large technological changes are?

Official monthly data is in today, and US solar power generation hit a new record high, up 20% compared to this time last year!

Americans hear "51st state" as Trump trolling. Canadians hear it as an existential threat to their sovereignty. That gap in perception is why Carney can't afford to look conciliatory, even if the economics of retaliation don't add up. This isn't just a trade war anymore.

Which is not to say we're powerless. Indeed, the opposite: the entire reason we perceive this impulse as 'fascism' rather than just 'normal politics' is that we have succeeded in building a world that is *better* than fascism. That is not natural, it is a creation of our effort!

Investigate. Imprison. Rebuild. reposted

I want to expand on this in a short thread. Fascism sucks. It is also not going away: it is an effectively permanent part of modern representative politics because it is an effectively permanent part of human nature. We have to be prepared to push back against it, basically forever.

"Online Rent-a-Sage" Bret Devereaux@bretdevereaux.bsky.social

That said, I think at this point, we can conclude that fascism is a latent political force in basically every country, to a greater or lesser degree and so you need to be thinking, "what if my country goes fascist? what if a neighboring country does?" and plan for how to avoid or deal with that.

Dems should absolutely kill corn ethanol and divert the spending to solar subsidies.

Kevin J. Kircher@kevinjkircher.com

Underappreciated: US farmland *already substantially produces energy, not food*, and does so very inefficiently. Corn ethanol (~40% of all US corn) requires about 100 times more land per vehicle-mile driven than solar photovoltaics -> electric vehicles. Shifting corn to solar *would free up land*.

The vandalism and desecration of the White House isn't just vanity and it's not trivial. It's caesarism, as in literally what Julius Caesar did to the symbolic architecture of civic republicanism. Our national iconography matters and allowing the disfiguring of it to persist is a substantive harm.
