The Disney Channel in the 80s and early 90s showed all kinds of quirky Canadian movies, and this one disturbed me for reasons I can’t fully articulate.

In honor of scary media month: what is the first piece of media you remember truly frightening you as a child?

Whenever someone posts a “cute animal video” on here that turns out to be AI slop, thats an automatic block. Somehow that kind of slop makes me angrier than most slop.

Anyway, here’s a pic of my real dog being cute. Fun facts: she drinks a normal amount of water, and though she can’t generate smooth, soulless syntax, she also doesn’t steal other peoples’ writing except when she chews on my books.

I truly, deeply, sincerely do think the guy flipping burgers at McDonalds should be able to afford rent, bills, and groceries with his paycheck alone. That's kind of the whole point of having a job and I can't believe this is considered a radical position.🤷🏽‍♀️

Honestly, the asexuality part is really important. (Polyamory too for legal reasons especially.) People always demand why asexuality requires protection, but it’s already happening in many religiously conservative places—it’s being labeled a deviant “ideology”.

Literary fiction is coming. It is going to revolutionize the economy. We know that China has already got a start on literary fiction. We can’t afford to be left out of the literary fiction economy. Think of your kids. They might already be engaging with literary fiction.

So many academics signing that open letter in support of the Racist of the Month with their whole chest is not really surprising but it’s still the worst.

If your loudest opinion on women’s sports is about preventing transgender people from participating, you aren’t engaged in women’s sports enough to know what “protecting” them would actually mean or count as a “good-faith person who cares”. That’s not care, it’s ignorance.

The “golden age” for corporate sciences has been a “golden age” for corporate humanities for a while. It’s important for humanists and scientists who are disinclined to participate in this takeover to see that we are in this together.

Every time I read a story about gynecology it's always something like "doctors discovered women could experience pain in 1989 but decided not to act on this knowledge for 20 years"

19thnews@19thnews.org

Trials found that Carevix — a portmanteau of “care” and “cervix" — reduced pain during IUD insertion by up to 73 percent and bleeding by 78 percent, compared to the tenaculum.

All of this. There are a handful of solidly mid network shows I watch just because I like how consistent they are.

The waits between seasons doubled in last 10 yrs — & this piece doesn’t get into it, but when execs also demand shorter seasons, in some cases way too short, the end result = audiences that just don’t engage with shows/characters the same way. www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-news/w...

folx, I’ve been working on AI "ethics" for almost a decade now & hate to tell you there’s no such thing as "ethical AI" the only "ethical principle" that works is regulating the shit out of the industry & to take back control of our autonomy, fundamental rights, freedoms & right to exist w/out AI

John Lewis was beaten with clubs wrapped in barbed wire on the Edmund Pettus Bridge fighting for voting rights. Today’s SCOTUS decision takes the sacrifice and fight of all who marched before us and throws it away. We must keep marching — too many have fought too hard to give up.

Man, I'll tell you what: I love those messy, meandering essay drafts from my students because they show thinking rather than product. Messy drafts are a middle finger to the smooth, soulless perfection of AI.
