the idea that a city's social services should be paid for one-by-one by these insane discretionary deals on a development-by-development basis is just madness. it's such a tremendous drain on the general prosperity in return for ???

I have YIMBY planner friends who swear up and down that these views are anything but hegemonic in planning but they’re not. The planning profession by-and-large believes the San Francisco model works. It’s near a consensus position.

Boston’s chief planner is a true believer in the San Francisco model, in which you make it impossible to profitably build apartments by-right so developers are forced into a politicized discretionary negotiation with the city, which relaxes the rules in exchange for below-market units.

In the absence of that, you'll see more things like operations to influence foreign elections, ordinary US citizens having opinions about what happens elsewhere (and vice versa) and other bad ways to deal with this. "Return to a world where there aren't global externalities" isn't on the table.

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

In his acceptance speech, Lula says he will work to regulate digital platforms in Brazil. “Digital crimes must be dealt with like real-life crimes.” This comes after Meta directly interfered with the Brazilian elections, favouring Flávio Bolsonaro.

Anyone who doesn't vote for this man in Detroit is *not* a Democrat in any reliable election. They play-act as one for attention.

davidrlurie@davidrlurie.com

The idea that Tucker Carlson and Fox viewing voters are who El-Sayed should be focused on now is also absurd. It is voters in Detroit who, by all informed accounts, are his key area of weakness. And they are Democrats.

🧵 There's a very unfortunate tendency of some very loyal Democrats to misapply "Murc's Law." For those who don't know of it, Murc's Law is the concept that the mainstream media acts as if only Democrats have agency in politics, and that Republican can't choose to act more rightfully.

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

It turns out that choosing the lesser of two evils is, in fact, a moral imperative. And some folks want to wait for the Revolutionary Perfect, but I would equally challenge them to demonstrate a single time where a 'start from nothing, year-0' revolution has turned out well for most people.

Courage credit to the Massachusetts legislature for nixxing the pointless gas tax holiday proposed by @massgovernor.bsky.social. Stunts like that don't help struggling folks. That $ funds way more useful things that would have suffered needlessly. And environmentally it's just foolish.
